4 forum posts | I have had a long interest in making things and I have had a good deal of experience of lathe work from many years ag at school and more recently in an number of friends workshops. I have made items for old machines, including some parts for a full size steam loco, a couple of radio dial mechansims very similiar to the Eddystone 898 offering and I would like to make a decent sized clock mechanism along with some more steam (stationary) engine models, I retired a bit early some years ago due to ill health (I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and decided to set up a decent machine shop. I currently have 4 machines, an Elliot Omnimill 02, A Sheraton Diploma lathe. More recently I purchased a Hafco AL 320G lathe and an HM 46 dove tail collumn mill. The Elliot and The Sheraton are really magnificent machines, particulalry the mill although it did need some work. Both these are 3 phase machines and I built my own power supply for them. The reason for the second lathe is the Sheraton is not really comfortable at full speed (1200rpm). I discussed this with a friend who runs a general purpose machine shop and he said it this was common on the larger lathes and one was better off doing such work on a smaller machine. The Sheraton is an Australian made copy of the American Leblond Regal Lathe, its not that big but weighs just on 1000Kg and goes well with the Elliot at1500Kg. Both machines are in excellent condition are well thought of in the engineering community and I was quite lucky to get them. For info on the Sheraton as they are not to well known out side Oz see http://www.lathes.co.uk/sheraton/page2.html

93 forum posts 22 photos | Hi from Gippsland
Sheraton made nice lathes , I have a Model AR that came from the local Tech. school . Despite years of abuse by kids, it is still giving sterling service .
The Elliot sounds nice, never heard of the Omnimill but it seems to be very versatile going by the lathes uk description . I have a CVA mill , a stout machine .
Are you near Wodonga ? Mike

4 forum posts | My sheraton it appears came from a technical college, its also fitted with a hydraulic copying attachment. This means it has a different crosslide than normal in that it has a mounting for a rear tool post. Unfortunately I have no info at all on the copying attachment, there being no makers ID on any part of it. Its the same though as the one fitted to the Cadet in the photos on lathes.co uk. The Elliot was sold as a tool room milling machine, an ideal machine for a small prototype workshop. I purchased a manual for it from lathes.co.uk and you should see the accessories they had for it. There was little one could not do with the machine. It gets quite a lot of use because its flexible in what one can do with it (its also built like a battleship) and its real easy to do a good job on it. I live outside Benalla in a rural area. ![]() 6956 forum posts 229 photos | Welcome. Not so rural that you can't get down to the Melbourne ME clubs perhaps. Did you pick up any painted tin cans from the street art festival? (antipodean relatives mean I get such info in my facebook feed and your post has made it a more relavant than the junk that site normally gives me) |

4 forum posts | Used to go down the Model and Experimental Engineers, also on the weekends when Puffing billy was building the Gembrook extension, both particularly the track work for Gembrook extension was really great, Sadly though the round trip us around 500 kilometres and its way to expensive these days. There's some simply really lovely paintings done, I watched the guy doing "The refuge" the attention to detail was amazing, he spent an hour or so doing the left eye, Do a search on the net on "Benalla street art" , the work is just out of this world.
