I had to finally 'sign-up' to comment on the fine job John Harris has made of his Atlas 10F, and more generally, to say how nice it is to see another Atlas in the pages (not unknown, but neither is it common). You may gather that I, too, have a 10-FV-36 which has been in the family for about 55 years (about 23 of those in my care). My ol' girl has always done everything I have asked of it and I have never really understood why these old machines seem to have been under valued over the years. The upside of that, is that it is possible to make sensible, upgrades without worrying about compromising the value of a multi-thousand pound machine. Mine has had many such 'mods' over the years, including a replacement topslide (fist job upon purchasing my mill), feedscrew bearing conversions and new dials on both slides at the same time, and so on. If John wants just ONE mod to transform the usability of the machine, I would suggest a tailstock lever lock conversion (as published in MEW about 9 years ago. I think it was Jim Whetren's article). That tailstock spannering used to drive me MAD!!. Nice work Mr. Harris! It looks lovely!
