Two old lathes already acquired, now they need restoring and using properly.

The gears are the "same" in DP and Pressure Angle. the difference is that gears for the early MLs were driven / compounded by 3/32" pins in drillings part way through the gears ( to prevent them falling out ) where the 7 Series lathes the gears are keyed. I recently drilled an ex 7 Series gear for use on a ML3. It meant drilling right through an original gear to use as a guide, but it gave us two 60T gears to provide the finer feed rate. Having made a gear or two for another ML4, (Probably why I had the cutter ) I was able to make a couple of 20T gears for the ML3. At least it got the machine up and running. Howard |
