Correct. Clean and dry.

OIl etc will encourage slipping. You want good metal to metal contact.

Get the nose of the taper halfway or so into the hole in the tailstock then rapidly "snap" the taper into final position so the impact seats it.

Instinctively, dry would seem logical but I've read somewhere there should be a trace of oil to stop galling if they do slip. I confess my drill chuck and centres go in the tailstock dry.

I have a S7 lever feed tailstock attachment suitable for the early tailstock illustrated in grey. it is used but very tidy and surplus to requirements. Send me a PM if interested.
