I take it that they are not supposed to be oiled ? Dave. Correct. Clean and dry. OIl etc will encourage slipping. You want good metal to metal contact. Get the nose of the taper halfway or so into the hole in the tailstock then rapidly "snap" the taper into final position so the impact seats it. . |

![]() 1376 forum posts 10 photos | Instinctively, dry would seem logical but I've read somewhere there should be a trace of oil to stop galling if they do slip. I confess my drill chuck and centres go in the tailstock dry. |
