Would a two flute end mill or PCB type drill with a larger shank be more suitable? |

My Mill arrived yesterday from Arc, excellent service. I've spent a good few hours stripping and degreasing it today. Really pleased. I made a cabinet/stand, which is my other side line, so all was installed in short time. Looking forward to using it on my next project. |

So, Ive ordered a metric R8 SIEG SX2 Plus today from Arc, who were very helpful. I've only ordered the collets I need for the cutters I have, and will add to these as and when I need them. I plan to call into Axminster over the next few days to pick up 100mm single jaw vice. Thanks for all the advice, it's much appreciated. Regards Bob.. |

Dear all Thanks for your advice, I think I know where I am going with this now. I have another question which I'd appreciate a bit more advice on. I'm planning on buying a Metric MT3 SEIG SX2 from ARC. These have been out of stock for a bit now, and I can't get any feedback as to when they will be available again. I've picked the Metric MT3 as my SEIG lathe is metric, and I'm more comfortable working with metric. I've gone for the MT3 over the R8 as I'm familiar with Morse tapers, have no experience of R8 and have a MT3 headstock in my lathe. I will be starting from scratch with the mill and will be buying collets etc. Having a look at my tooling the only thing I have that I may have used on the mill is a 3MT fly cutter. So, should I go for R8? I can buy another fly cutter for cost of one, or a R8 MT3 adaptor? Any benefits of MT3 over R8? Thanks in advance Bob.. |
Thread: An EBAY observation |

When I was an apprentice in the late 70's, the company I worked for had a Bostomaic CNC machine. This was one of the first in the country, and a huge investment. It lived in it's own enclosed work area that was spotless. It was operated, cared for and loved by two gentlemen, one of which spent most of his time peering at a 6" green screen on a PC (that was nearly the same size as the machine) producing meters of punched tape and winding it onto spools. This was a revolution and was in a short time going to repalce all the conventional machines. There is on one EBAY now with a starting bid of 99p!!! I wonder how many are still in use compared to the Bridgeports? |

I'm deciding what accessories to buy for a SIEG SX2. Should I buy a seperate ER32 collet chuck or some finger collets? At the moment I'm leaning towards the finger collets. RDG do a reasonable set. Are there any benefits of a self centering vice over a standard vice? I'm looking at a small SOBA vice? Thanks in advance. Bob.. |
Thread: Casting query |
20/07/2012 09:48:42 |
Advice please. I'm planning to make, or have somebody make a small casting for me. It's for a small steam engine and Will need to be silver soldered into a small brass boiler, so I guess it will need to be bronze? What wood should I use for a pattern, is there a preference? In the past I've used lime for some detail carvining and fine finish. If bronze is the correct material what % should I allow for shrinkage? Thank Bob |

Thread: Which mini mill?? |
06/07/2012 18:24:04 |
I am planning to buy a SIEG SX2 milling machine. I've read and digested advice with regard to buy as big as you can, what will it be used for etc and have made my decision based upon, limited space and planned use in the near/forseeable future. It seems that the resale market for these is reasonable and hopefully accecories that I buy will be transferrable. I have looked at two suppliers, Axminster and Arc and I see one main difference. The Arc SX2 Super has a larger table with more travel and a fixed column. The Axminster SX2 has a smaller table with a column that tilts 45 degrees. My question is which is the better solution? what is the value of a tiliting column? Sorry that's two questions! I'm sure which ever one I go for at some stage I will wish I'd picked the other, but which one will cause me to tell myself this less? Advice please Bob..

Thread: White elephant |
09/06/2012 20:07:35 |
So, I discovered this afternoon that the "white elephant" vax steam cleaner that Mrs P bought several years ago, and has at least a quarter of an inch of attic dust on, will run my small small engine. Isn't steam good at pointing out leaks!. It never leaked whenI ran it on compressed air. I need to make a gasket for the cylinder head, and seal the thread on the steam fitting. What sould I use to seal a small thread and make a thin gasket? mmmmmm humble pie for tea tonight......... |
Thread: How ho I form this |
30/04/2012 20:45:14 |
Dear all Back again for some more advice. I need to form the shape in the drawing below in a piece of 4mm diameter steel rod. I've thought about making a die, annealing the rod clamping in the vice. Will this work? How many weeatbix will I Need?, too many? What are my other options. Thanks in expectation |

Hi Jim Thanks for your interest. I'm not sure is the answer to your question. I'm working from some 1910 patent sketches and some very sparse data. From the few images I have my best guess is that its cast. Ive assumed die cast ally.... |

Some more advice on this please. As per your previous comments I am now making this from steel to add mass. I'm unsure how to turn/bore the face profiles. To I start from the centre and work out as far as I can go, and then with an opposite ground tool work from the outside to meet this? How do I achieve the finish on the inside of the rim and the centre. I've removed some info from the drawing to clarify the dotted profile I'm talking about. Thanks Bob.. |
