Thread: Alibre - A First Attempt |

Jason: Once you start doing arty-design type stuff where the edges merge and curves need adjusting it can start getting processor intensive and if it falls over it can't always undo, it just hangs. So I just stick with blockwork. It may be my crappy computer but I just got a decent 4GB graphics card and the issue remained I'm doing an MG42 as an exercise to build my skills, the square nose part merging into the muzzle as part of the shaped sheet metalwork has given me a lot of hassle for example ches: You can download Alibre Design and the Atom Licence will work on it if you do buy it I have found the Atom downloads don't actually work for me Alibre Design seems to be the reliable workhorse core program, plus if you want to upgrade from Atom it's just a case of your $1000 key unlocking software you already know will work Edited By Ady1 on 27/04/2023 10:48:12 |

If you can't get a revolve cut to work for you in this case, consider using a 3D Chamfer instead - then go back to revolve cuts on another occasion. It doesn't help anyone if you end up getting frustrated. Taking a break from the screen can often be beneficial.
I avoid chamfer because it can cause issues and blow up the software, the numbers/calculations do weird things that the software can't handle Simple Papercut stuff only for beginners IMO, (and middle range dudes like me too) I would only start chamfering once my final drawing was complete and safely saved If I really want a "chamfer" I draw a triangle with an arc hypotenuse and extrude cut, it's far more stable |

Try practicing with a simple example, we're only taking a chunk out of the top Draw a simple cylinder slap bang in the middle 40mm exit 2d and extrude boss to 40mm Highlight the plane that cuts it in half (goes blue), right click and click "activate 2d sketch" This is the view down the middle Draw any old triangle you like
Come out of 2d sketch and click revolve cut The box has your triangle (sketch2) and is asking for the axis that rotates the sketch via the blue highlighted box Click on the axis going through the cylinder from left to right and it shows you the realtime cut click ok and you will be returned to the 3d view

Until you set up your master working interfaces for metric and Imperial and get a decent mouse you're pretty much up the creek without a paddle Tapered stuff is easier if you draw 2 circles, one at at each end and use the loft command, but you can use revolve-cut Use the box viewer in the top right corner to manipulate your 3D view about Edited By Ady1 on 26/04/2023 23:38:41 |

The unbranded stuff we're getting in the UK now is just cheese and should be avoided My older Lidl ones were passable, if you resharpened regularly Presumably the good stuff is being kept for their home market, I can't see the chinese space program getting very far with the "cobalt" firestarters I tried So it's branded only from now on, no more imported cheese for Ady |

I've never had a baddie from them yet. One item went awol. Thing is, their basic items save a lot of effort for not too much moolah and you can sort out any shortcomings yourself Got some very capable basic welding stuff before it got sold out If you're in the CNC market it's definitely worth keeping an eye on them for useful bargains Edited By Ady1 on 26/04/2023 13:16:23 |

Everything in nature is probability and has already been done over millions of years If we assume most colours have already been tried then yellow attracted the most diverse array of insects and was the most successful reproductive colour The shoebill has 2 hatchlings and always starves one to death. Shoebills who try to bring up 2 hatchlings have been out-competed and remain extinct so far |

With a programmable mouse you can cycle through all the active windows with a mouse click There's hardly room for a mouse at my desk, never mind another monitor Edited By Ady1 on 24/04/2023 13:00:23 |

A few things from your first post A decent mouse with a wheel makes a big difference. I use a 5 button intellimouse optical, the chinese knock-offs work fine if you want new, about 35 quid My most stable Win7 build is an Alibre Design download (v25) with an Atom Licence, all my Atom downloads crash with rendering issues If you start to change things in the middle of a workflow it's usually fine but occasionally it can get weird/unstable, so save/shutdown and reopen the project to get back to normal useage And good luck, it's well worth the effort to become an Alibre user Edited By Ady1 on 23/04/2023 23:23:30 |

And pictures keep the all important insurers happy |

Pictures of items are probbly best, showing unique markings Keep them in a computer file It can depend on how busy they are with stolen stuff. Read an interesting case, car stolen, turns up half a mile away with a new ID and the same unique dents/scratches when the owner ran into it. Took quite a while to get sorted out even though it was just up the road. |

It used to be the cold that zapped all our battery power But now it's globul warming lol Are batteries really robust enough for our brave new eco world? |
21/04/2023 17:04:37 |
Gtech do a really good hoover, the design and useage is sooo easy If their lawnmower is similar then it's worth checking out I sold off my indestructible sebo hoover because we stopped using it, just too heavy compared to the Gtech |

Learning what to look for when buying stuff is yet another skill to be acquired Just because it says what you are looking for doesn't mean it will be what you are looking for Branding in particular can become a bit of a lottery because the brand has been sold to someone in Asia and they use cheesy steel instead of sheffield steel Then there's the knock-offs wot say wot they're not... Welcome to our world ! |
21/04/2023 14:05:51 |
And as you improve you use better gear which does a better job All my early drills were Lidl and ebay jobs but now its all Dormer and Presto and I grab any old imperial drills like a hungry dog |
