Thread: PM Research model - Cylinder Head and Gaskets
26/11/2020 02:22:05

A link to Joe Pieczynski's latest Youtube video in his series about machining a Stuart steam engine and some techniques for holding and centreing small parts. Also how he makes gaskets at the same time as machining the part.

Thread: Suggestions for lathe-only projects?
25/11/2020 22:33:09

Hi William,

There are a 1000 and 1 projects to make on a lathe. It depends on what your interests and hobbies are. Do a search on Google and Youtube for ideas.

Harold Hall's website for metalworking has many projects; **LINK**

There have been lots of projects that have been machined on a faceplate and with a milling slide on a lathe but as mentioned above, they are limited in what you can make. A mill/drill is much more useful.

Thread: M42 bandsaw blades
25/11/2020 22:12:26

Hi Sam,

I'm not an expert on bandsaw blades but my research indicates that M42 grade blades are general purpose, bi-metal bladse suitable for cutting aluminium and steel.

Sawcraft.co.uk reference here: **LINK**

A useful reference to bandsaw blades by Lenox tools : **LINK**

(Something that I learnt in the Lenox guide was how to break in a new blade to extend its life)

Thread: Milling attachment
14/11/2020 21:34:35

The early copies of Model Engineer had articles about milling attachments.

**LINK**

Volume 95 had a Myford attachment. There is also more information in other editions but I cannot recall which one.

Thread: SX3 milling machine
14/11/2020 12:11:22

Peter,

Do a serach on this site for SX3 as there are previous posts about problems. I used to have an SX3 which was great until it started to have problems with the main motor control board and the power feed board and I got rid of it. New controller boards are not cheap if you can get one . Now have a mill with a standard AC motor and gearbox instead of variable speed DC.

Thread: Is this better than single purpose rope?
13/11/2020 08:03:00

If we use rope in a small model, when does it become string ?

Thread: Barrier Cream
12/11/2020 05:17:56

I have just finished a painting job using a polyurethane based paint and applied a very small amount of Gloves in a Bottle to my hands before starting. As expected, my hands got covered in paint.

A wipe over with a cloth dampened with acetone paint thinner and a wash under water with a hand cleaner and the paint removed. This was a days work and my hands where washed 3 or 4 times. (No extra Gloves added). At the end of the day, a quick scrub with a nail brush removed all of the paint around my nails. Even after having acetone on my hands, my skin was still moist and not dried out.

Gloves in a Bottle is more than just a barrier cream and recommended.

Thread: Steam pump
11/11/2020 10:20:35

Not sure Fizzy,

The inside ports are for the return steam and the passage is cut off as the piston nears the end of the stroke, possibly as a soft buffer, and slowing the piston so it does not slam into the end of the cylinder.

The outer ports are for the steam to enter the cylinder and has to be at the far end. But if you look closely (and stop and start the video), the timing of steam entering the cylinder is wrong. The steam enters on the exhaust stroke. Probably because the pump must be mechanically driven because of the cutouts and the operators got the sequence wrong.

It works for me and it's free to use. So I can't complain. thumbs up

Thread: Power feeds for Chinese mills
09/11/2020 22:18:13

The Warco power feed also incorporates a gearbox as well as a motor and speed control but at £350 is OTT and the same units are available on ebay for much less but you will not have the backup of a local supplier.

Thread: Lathe suds drain ideas
08/11/2020 22:07:05

Hi Jim, Your arrangement is similar to my suds return.

The suds for my mill goes thru a strainer first to remove large swarf before returning to the tank. The tank has 2 compartments with a wall between them. Small particles settle on the bottom of the first compartmnet and the clean liquid flows over the wall. There is also a magnet at the bottom of the first compartment.  (It is a commercially made pump)

Thread: Which edge finder?
06/11/2020 22:11:52

I have an electronic and a split cylinder type and mainly use the split type. They are inexpensive and less susceptable to damage. If you over travel the edge of the work piece, the split end just moves sideways. (have gone a bit too far on occasions and the end has come off but easy to re-attach to the internal spring). My electronic edge finder is rigid and would bend if pushed too much.

Thread: PC unable to read PNY flash card
05/11/2020 03:51:51

Hi Sam,

You can also try and see if the camera that took the photos can read the card. If so, you could possibly us the camera to transfer the photos to a computer.

Paul

05/11/2020 01:15:12

Cards can get corrupted and I have lost a few memory cards and thumb drives. Always have a backup in case of failure. And use the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject icon before removing card or USB memory

Do a Google search to resolve problem. Such as thei one.

You can also download and install software that will recover data from damaged disks.
