Thread: Zytos ,20 DP Gears and Nickel Plate/Rod ? |
30/12/2018 10:49:58 |
Hey Guys. Top o the morning to ya. Just had breckie and am now thinking about beginning to tackle some of the outstanding issues on my Zyto. So Brian Wood has mentioned in a previous post that he believes that the Zyto uses the same 20 DP as the Myford ML 2/4 but he was unsure if they have the same bore. I've measured a few gears now and i get a small variance but i estimate the reading to be 0.6220 which is just under the 5/8" which is written as 0.625 in the Machinery Handbook in the table on page 1740. So as my digital vernier isnt especially great i am going to accept for the time being that the bore is indeed 5/8" and the same as the Myfords. Now I need to tackle the Diametral Pitch (DP). Defined as being the Ratio of the number of teeth to the number of inches of pitch diameter - equals number of gear teeth to each inch of pitch diameter. So taking a small 25 tooth gear as an example we have :- 25 Now measuring the outside diameter of the teeth I get approximately 1.345 which works out to be just over 1 11/32" but also very close to 1.375 which is 1 3/8" ! However i also estimate the Whole Depth to be 7/64 as per my M&W Analoge depth gauge. Its the only thing ive got slim enough to fit the gear teeth. Now i can devide this by two to get the addendium and then subtract that twice from the OD but as the Addendium and Dedendum equal the working depth then its pointless and Im just going to subtract the whole depth from the OD once to get my Pitch Circle. Ok i realise the true Pitch circle should be the OD -(Addendium x2) but as my Measurement of the whole depth is likely of by a margin as I don't think its quite reaching the bottom of the tooth whole depth and is in fact closer to the working depth then I'm fairly close to being on the money. So .. 1 11/32 - 7/64 or 1 22/64 - 7/64 = 1 15/64 OK so.. OR 1 3/8 - 7/64 or 1 24/64 - 7/64 = 1 17/64 lets call it 1 16/64" 1 16/64 = 1 8/32 or 1 4/16 or 1 2/8 or 1 1/4 Now where was I. Umm The ratio thats it. So. 25 : 1 1/4 ? Therefore 25 teeth : 1 1/4" so 25 : 1.25" Therfore 25 / 1.25 = 20 DP Well iwent round the houses with that but its the first time i worked out the DP of a gear so i just wrote my thoughts. However the V over IR or A is true for all formulae, for all maths as far as i know. The all seeing eye right enough. So where am i now ! Umm Well ive confirmed that Brian was accurate in his information and ive got a bit more confidence in a myford gear fitting my Zyto if i buy one. Ideally id like to make my own but im a ways from that yet and TBH i doubt i can make them for the cost it takes to buy them. Even a cast iron blank is going to be expensive let alone the tooling, time, postage etc. So I need to get on with painting next but before i go can anyone recommend a cheep supplier for Nickel thats not going to ask for minimum order or silly money for postage. Im in a bit of a pickle with work at the moment or the lack thereoff ! :/ Have fun guys and chill out to some relaxing sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFlrc16xjik |
Thread: Tyzack Zyto Serial Number ? |

Thanks Martin, You have given me a lot to think about. I just need to track down a countershaft and motor now. My Zyto is coming along slowly. Starting to give parts their final coat of paint now. Would like to nickle plate some parts though and don't know where to get some nickle rod or strips from at a reasonable price. E-Bay seems overpriced for the size amount of nickel you get. Also what do you think about my idea of putting some wick into the oil cups ? Do you know if they had wick fitted when new ? I recall that the ML7 cups did so can only guess that the Zyto was the same. I'm also considering replacing the cups with cheep chineese drip feeders. I would have to make a male/female adapter as they are 10mm versus ? whatever thread is on the zyto cups/ in the headstock but its doable i think. So i'm needing a 1400 rpm motor or there about's. What diameters are the pulleys connecting your Motor - Countershaft ? I learned about pulleys and such when i served my time but i don't think I've had need of that part of my brain since :/ I guess its still rattling around in there somewhere if only I could remember where i filed it |

Ok Guys. Large pulley is 4" middle pulley is 3 1/4" and small pulley is 2 1/2"Please ignore my question on the 'dog clutch' i meant backgear and was just being stupid at the time. I get tired as i try to do too much and then stupidity occurs

Hey guys, Can any of you recommend where i can figure out the speed range of the Zyto using the diameter of the pulleys and back gear ratios. Also i need clarification on how the little knurled spring loaded pin in the main spindle 80 tooth gear interacts with the pulley drum. Likewise an explanation of the 'dog clutch' at the rear. Again any help is appreciated. I need all i can get |

Thanks Guys. I much appreciate any help you can provide. Ive an album of my Zyto as it was delivered errr 3 weeks ago now. An impulse buy on E-Bay late one evening. My thoughts were its a little lathe ! I will have her up and running in no time :/ Thinking a week or two at the outside. :'( Anyroads. Parts i either need or want. Leadscrew Handle, Motor, Countershaft, Flat Belt, Guards, Gears, 45,50 and 63 - The 63 was a later accessory for metric conversion., Orgional Faceplate, Origional Driving Plate, Any and all litriture pertaining to the Zyto, Accessories, Projects etc. Thanks to Chris and Martin for their replies. Will look forward to hearing from you Chris re any spares you may have. Im worried that my headstock bearings are shot. I full cups with 3 in 1 oil and turn the spindle by hand and you can see the right hand side cup drain of oil as you turn spindle.. I would't use 3 in 1 when in use but i was just wanting some lube in there to help free the spindle out. I seem to have a tight spot so likely the spindle has been siezed and has gaulling. I should really strip it and inspect it but 've avoided this so far.
Sorry for apaling spelling but im unused to this forum editing system. How do you turn of overwrite text ? I cant seem to insert new text before posting ie edit spelling errors. Edited By Paul Kennedy on 27/12/2018 15:41:32 |

Hey guys, Sorry to post again so soon after my last post. However I have found a serial number of sorts on my Zyto. B 907. Im wondering if anyone knows where or if there are records of the year it was produced ? I know Myford ML7's can be identified fairly accurately using there serial number on the back of the bed ways. Im hoping the Zyto can also be aged ? using its serial number. Im also looking for more information or availability of the gears it came with. Im missing the 45,50 and 63 tooth gears. Also looking for the older style gear covers and the handwheel for the leedscrew although i guess i could make this when i get her running. Would love to hear about a good motor hats quiet and what the best flat belt to use would be ? Also quiet ! Grease or oil for change gears ? Also any and all information, articles on the Zyto or even just what magazine isse to find it in is also welcome. Also looking for the origional tool post clamp but i think i have a spare ML7 tool post clamp i could use and recommendation for a four way or Quick Change tool post for this size of lathe. I know its not origional but it can be removed easil so. OK thats it for now. Likely forgot something but i need to retire for the night now. Gnite all and happy new year. |

Sorry Brian, Don't fancy modifying an origional item. Call it my OCD but i prefer to keep it standard. Im planing a cheep and nasty chineese faceplate and modify it if i cant find an origional. |
