A few of the many uses are pistons, piston rings and cylinders on IC engines, but not necessarily or desirable all in the same engine.

Hi sam

I can only guess the inputs to the Compact 5 steppers will be as used on the 5PC model, I'm sure they were the same steppers.

You mention buffer/bob, electronics is not my forte so that means nothing to me although I can recognise some components and make up simple ccts from schematics.

Am I correct in thinking the L297D interface board was fitted between the parallel computer port and the Emco stepper control pcb ?

Did you use Mach for control ?

Both my Compact 5 cnc lathe and F1 mill are still running original controls, I use MFI for writing any lengthy programs required or if only a few ops needed it is simple and quick to enter direct at either machine.

I have program control of the spindle stop/start and speed by using an add-on board from Henk Versuren. the stop/start is std M03-M05 and speed control by using M22 for cnc speed control and M26 to set the speed parameter as % of belted speed. Once programmed the M22 is global so only M26 needed to provide further speed changes in the program.

Which method did you use to bypass the on board computer ?

Hi Sam

Very impressive conversion with a lot less work and cost associated with new steppers, drivers and related parts. like the tapered threads.

Do you know if the system could connect into the stepper boards and operate the F1 mill and the Compact 5 cnc machines ?

Which control program do you use for both machines?

Is the lathe the Compact 5 cnc (has the larger control box with integral computer) or the 5PC that needs an external computer ?

Hi Chris

When adding a line in MFI it inserts a G21 line, you need to highlight the 21 and enter the G code number you want, press Enter and you move into the X column, type in your dimension and press Enter, cursor moves to the Z column, type in your dimension and again press Enter. If you used G00 the cursor now goes to the Comment line, type in any note if required and again press Enter, that line is now completed and your cursor will be positioned at the next line of code.

The G code highlighted will be 00 as that was your last line G code choice, if you want another code type it in and press Enter and repeat as before.

If using a G84 you will have 6 columns for information, you need to press Enter for each of the columns to complete entering the line of code.

I have no experience using Welturn but you are probably correct regarding program length.

Thread: Slitting Saw on small vertical mill - what size?

Whichever you go for the 63mm length arbor with collars is more useful than the shorter MT3 for use with 16mm centre blades.

With slitting saws you also need to consider how much depth of cut you can obtain with various blade diameters and arbor collar diameters, max DOC will be: (blade diameter minus arbor collar diameter ) / 2

With some combinations this can be a very small max DOC.

I haven't any experience using the Sieg X2 but I'm sure with the correct set-up and choice of saw thickness, spindle speed and feedrate those machines are capable of the task. When slitting it is best to use a coolant sprayed onto the saw teeth when they leave the cut to remove any chips that may be between teeth, failing coolant an air blast will achieve the same but without the lubrication.

Because slitting is done at low speeds there may be a problem with available torque, fizzy mentions this problem.

Perhaps the MT1 shanked holder is for ES type collets, same taper and front angle as ER but without the removal groove.

Don't forget the 209 line limit per program for the computer in the Emco Compact 5 CNC lathe, most programs will generate G code programs with many more lines than that for relatively simple workpieces.

Any program generated will also have to use the G & M codes recognised by the on board computer, that excludes many used in CAM programs.

Using the cycle commands available in the program produces a program with very few lines of code to produce many parts, G84 turning and boring, G88 facing & the G?? threading cycles are the most commonly used. There are others for grooving, drilling and reaming but not as much used as the others.

Did you ask the same question on the Yahoo Emco Forum ?

Good advice given already but if you haven't got a die consider buying a full form insert for the 1.5mm thread, will also be OK for other diameters, not like a die which will only suit 1 diameter.

Do a full width cut and measure the slot, even with new cutters if not top quality you may find a discrepency in the width cut.
