Thread: how to unsubscibe |

I am not a subscriber as I prefer to support my local newsagents with a regular order for both magazines but sums I can do. Surely if one gets 3 magazines for £1 and then 13 for £42 the relevant sum is 43/16 to give £2.69 per issue, reverting to £3.23 after that. If it were my offer I would go further and say the first year consisted of the 3 magazines for £1 and three quarters at £10.50 since there is a good chance one of those quarters would be the 4 magazine one. The sum now becomes 32.50/13 which looks even batter at £2.50 per magazine. Sorry, got my pedant head on today.
Hi Andy, You are quite the stickler for detail! We tend to do it the way that we have because the recipients are actually effectively receiving the first three issues for £1 (so 33.3p each) as a trial. Our ad then states that they will receive all future issues for £3.23 - so it would be a bit misleading to include the three issues that they have already paid a pound for within our calculations! Thanks for your post though and for supporting the mag! Bazyle - You are very welcome! I hope that the explanation helped. Best wishes, Kate

Neil, sorry to be dumping this on you. Does my sub renew on the aniversary of today 1 year after starting or 3 issues later allowing for the first 3 at £1? If I go to the link you gave above I get a different page from the one I eventually get to using the 'subscribe' tab at the top of the forum page. Example print issues: The latter page says total 13 issues, 3 at £1 and subsequent issues (10 implied) at 3.23. That seems to be £3 + 32.3 = £35.3 for 13 issues ending 1 year from today. It is a real pain after hitting the 'subscribe' tab at the top of the forum to have to go to 13 different page loads to get a list of the prices of all the options and then not really know what teh actual price is. Get all the prices on one page. Then get all the bits to stack up. I suggest the management get an elderly relative of >70 years to look at the website as it stands for no more than 5 minutes and then write down with confidence how much they must put aside from their pension per week for each product and how much each issue is costing.
Hi Bazyle, Thank you for your post - Neil has asked me to jump in to explain the offer that is running at the moment. It is a Direct Debit offer so if you agree to give us £1 we will give you 3 issues of Model Engineers' Workshop in exchange for this. If you cancel (by calling or emailing our subs team - details below) before you receive the third issue then we will not take anything else. If however you wish to carry on subscribing then 3 months from the date the first £1 was taken, we will take £10.50 and will continue to do so every three months until you tell us that you no longer want us to. With regards to your query regarding the price of the magazine that you are paying for, this is based on you continuing for a year after the 3 issue trial period. We do this because it's the only way to divide it out with 13 issues in the year. There will be 3 quarters where you will receive 3 issues, and 1 quarter where you will receive 4 issues, but because people subscribe throughout the year we cannot specify which quarter you will receive your 4 issues in. We work on the basis that you will pay £1 for your initial trial, then if you decide to continue you will pay £10.50 per quarter (£42 per year) and over that year you will receive 13 magazines, making each magazine £3.23. I hope that that helps, and thank you for your feedback - I very much welcome any further comments you may have and am happy to look at our webpages to try and make this offer a bit clearer. Kind regards, Kate (Subscriptions)

More sad really that they are destroying their goodwill and thus eventually, unless they do something about it, some good magazines. However, a quote from Katherine Scott in an earlier post: "B/ Yes the Online Archive is available with the Digital only subscription." I take this to mean that the current web based online archive will continue. Are you reading this Katherine (or anyone else at MTM)? Would you like to comment? Russell. Hi Russell, Apologies for my slow reply (I have been away without an internet connection - working at the Festival of Quilts(!)). Yes it is intended that the current web based online archive will continue (available with the Digital or Print + Digital Subscription) - I cannot claim that this will be the case forever though I'm afraid; the company does reserve the right the withdraw this archive and I cannot make any guarantee that this will not be done in the future - or that the format of the subscriptions packages/software will not change again at some point. I can however say that currently there is absolutely intention to withdraw the archive, and no plan to further change the subscriptions packages. Best wishes, Kate |
Thread: Is it true that our access to the digital archive going to disappear? |

Hi Everyone, Just to let you all know, I'm going to be out of the office for the rest of today and tomorrow, so if there are any further queries I will try to get answers sorted early next week. If you have a question regarding the new packages or upgrading then our subscriptions bureau should also be able to help you with this. Their number is 0844 543 8200 and they are open weekdays 8am – 9:30pm & Saturday 8am-4pm. Alternatively they can be emailed at [email protected]. We also have a frequently asked questions page which we are building at the moment - this may help to clarify the situation with some basic queries and technical questions. The address for this is www.model-engineer.co.uk/faqs. If you are having extensive technical problems or have a query about whether the digital downloads software will work with your device please email [email protected]. Please note that if you are a subscriber that currently receives issues of the magazine in the post and has access to the Online Archive then you are not currently entitled to the new digital downloads as part of your subscriptions package - to get these digital downloads you would need to upgrade to the new Print + Digital Subscription. You can do this by calling the phone number above. Best wishes, Kate |

Our historic subscriptions only granted subscribers access whilst their subscription was current and although we appreciate that you are disappointed that this element will no longer be classified as part of your current subscription, we feel that the offer to upgrade is a perfectly reasonable one; allowing you to have a digital back up of the magazine that you actually own. Kate I am getting more and more confused. Perhaps it's my age? 1. I am presently getting the paper magazines with access to the archive. Thus I already "have a digital back up of the magazine that you actually own". So what does the "upgrade" acctually offer me? 2. I have no need of the Pocket Mags application and, even if I did, I understand that you will not be supporting Linux. I don't use Windows so I can't use it unless I buy a tablet thingy. 3. Will the present digital archive which suits me fine continue to be available via the web browser: a) With my current subscription? b) With a digital only subscription? Thanks in anticipation for your clarification. Russell. Edited By Russell Eberhardt on 18/07/2013 09:02:53 Hi Russell, Sorry to confuse you on this; hopefully I can pin it down for you in this post! Answer to qu 1. The subscription that you currently have includes free access to the Online Archive. If you were to let your subscription lapse, you would no longer have access to these issues. So your current subscription does not allow you to keep those back issues - you are just 'renting' these whilst you have a current subscription. The new digital editions that we have allow you to actually download and keep new issues of the magazine (from the issue available at the point that you upgrade), so you would still be able to read these issues even if you let your subscription lapse in the future. Answer to qu 2. I am afraid I'm not much of a whizz when it comes to technology, but I have been advised that a Linux friendly offline reader will be introduced in early 2014, so if you did want to change your account to one that features the Online Archive and the Digital downloads you would be best to wait for this software to be introduced. We will announce this when it becomes available. Answer to qu 3. A/ The Online Archive will continue to be available with your current subscription but the access will be switched off in July 2014 (at which point your current subscription will have expired). B/ Yes the Online Archive is available with the Digital only subscription. I hope that helps! Best wishes, Kate

Hi Kate, one other query I have is, suppose I upgrade to Print + Digital and then at the next anual subsciption renewal I wish to go back to just print, or I decide to carry on with just digital, would I be classed as a new subsciber on would I just have to pay what I would if I carried on being just print or what I would have been paying if I were just digital? Hope you understand my query. Regards Nick. Hi Nick, A very good question! If you wish to transfer over to a different package at the point of renewal then we would charge the renewal price even though you may be a 'new customer' to that package. That is unless you decided to subscribe through a special promotion (such as the free gift offer featured in the magazine), if you did this then you would be charged whatever price is featured in the advert. I hope that answers your question! Best wishes, Kate |

Kate, I'm confused I already pay by annual direct debit ... If I upgraded now, you are saying that I would pay £67 upon renewal (Next June) ... but if I converted my direct debit to quartly upon renewal I would pay £15.50 per quarter (From next June)(This equates to £62 per annum) Have I understood correctly? How do I upgrade (and convert to quarterly DD)? Dave P.S My details still show my ME sub expiry as 28/6/2013 but I have renewed. Hi Dave, Sorry, didn't mean to confuse! As a Direct Debit customer we can upgrade you now so that you get free access for the remainder of your current subscription. The £67 charge is the credit card charge, so you can chose when you upgrade to either pay £15.50 per quarter, or £62 per year. Either way the payment will not be taken until your next Direct Debit is due. If you would like to upgrade please give our subscriptions bureau a call on 0844 543 8200 and they will sort this out for you. You will then be able to download the digital editions following the instructions at www.model-engineer.co.uk/digitalaccess. Best wishes, Kate |

Hi Kate, I subscribe to both ME and MEW on a Direct Debit subscription, from one of your earlier posts, I would assume that this gives me access to the digital downloads however pocketmags are telling me I am a paper only subscriber and therefore do not have access to the digital downloads. Can you please clarify the situation for me. regards Graeme Hi Graeme, If you give our subscriptions bureau a call on 0844 543 8200 then they will upgrade you for free, you will just need to agree to pay the Print + Digital price when your next Direct Debit payment is due. Once they have upgraded you then you should be able to follow the instructions at www.model-engineer.co.uk/digitalaccess and start downloading straightaway. Hope that helps! Best wishes, Kate |

John, I assume that you have taken out a new Digital subscription? (The higher cost one) If you have an older Digital Subscription (i.e. one purchased prior to this month) then you won't be able to download issues. (That is what I understand the situation is) Dave
Hi Dave, Just to advise, this is not the case – those with an existing Digital Subscription can access the new Digital downloads for free as part of their current subscription. Best wishes, Kate |

I have just been asked by Kate in the Subscriptions department to say that she hopes to have answers to the queries raised by early next week and they will be posted here as soon as they are available. Diane is off to IMLEC for the weekend so won't be able to add anything further until she returns. On the plus side Kate informs me that some of the missing issues in the archive are being added as I write this, the rest will follow as they are scanned in. If anyone knows of a specific issue that is either missing or the wrong mag comes up when clicked can they post the issue number here.
J Hi Jason, I've just looked through the ME archive and 4158, 4274, 4275 and 4315 are missing. Regards Nick. Hi Nick, Thank you for flagging up these missing issues, 4165 was also missing, which I have managed to locate and get uploaded (this was added to the archive on Friday). The other magazines will need to be located in our physical archive and scanned which will regretfully take some time. We will try to get these added as soon as physically possible. I like paper copies of ME: once you have read them you can either give them to the club for others who do not subscribe to read or sell them as volumes. Digital subscriptions seem very restricted. For instance when I down load a copy can I only keep it on that phone/computer that I downloaded it on to? What happens when in two years time I upgrade my phone/computer again? Can I transfer the file to my other/new computer? I assume I will not be able to because otherwise there would be nothing stopping me sending that digital copy out to all my mates. Jo Hi Jo The Digital downloads are stored by our software development company Pocket Mags; as long as you create a free account with them then all of your issues will be backed up and you will be able to re-download the issues to your device/pc. The magazines are downloadable to an offline reader (or app) so that they can be read without an internet connection (and they can be read after your subscription has ended), but they do not allow you to save a PDF and send it out to other people (this is illegal as it infringes on copyright law). Best wishes, Kate |

Dianne, I have been a subscriber to both magazines for some years and am not at all happy with this situation. I used to keep all my backnumbers but some time ago we were told that subscribers (to the paper magazine) would have access to the digital archives. Great I thought, I can recover some workshop space by sending my old copies for recycling. Now we are told that the promise made earlier will be renaiged upon and I will have to pay extra for something I have already bought. To my mind this is entirely dishonest and I am unlikely to renew my subscription next time if you continue to treat your customers this way. I stronly suspect that this proposed move will significantly reduce your revenue and not, as your bean counters evidently believe, increase it. The way to increase revenue is to create happy customers.
Hi Russell Your current contract is being fully honoured, as your access to the Online Archive will remain for the rest of your current subscription. Hi all,
After switching to the digital version i have been mostly happy with the exception that if i wanted to print something i had to do it a page at a time .
So there could be tiered system : I found the Digial subs are excellent except i cannot 'click a copy and print the whole magazine . Ian
Hi Ian, Thank you for your feedback regarding the package structures, we welcome reader comments on this and do take your views into consideration. We have chosen to structure these new packages in this specific way in order to offer subscribers the best possible value for money whilst accounting for the costs of these products/services. We are starting to look into the possibility of re-introducing an Online Archive only subscription so we will pop a post on here when we have a better idea of when we can re-activate this (unfortunately it’s not as straightforward as just flipping a switch). We agree that subscribers should be able to download and keep issues of the magazine; hence the introduction of our new digital downloads. We will not however produce these magazines as PDFs as this leaves them at a much greater vulnerability of people breaking copyright law. The same goes for being able to print the digital magazine in one go as well I’m afraid. Best wishes, Kate |

Diane ... another question for your Subscription manager ... I have just renewed ME (June) ... If I upgraded to the New Print and Digital (i.e ability to download and read current issues offline) - a/ What would it cost me? b/ Would I be able to download and keep all issues since the start of my current subscription period, (i.e the June/July issues) or only those after the upgrade? Thanks Dave Edited By Steambuff on 11/07/2013 19:03:46 Hi Dave, A/ We will be inviting credit card subscribers to upgrade for the remainder of their contract for free as part of our renewals series, at the point of renewal the cost of your next subscription would be £67 if you’re in the UK (because you are renewing, you get a better rate than new subscribers). Alternatively if you would like to upgrade now you can do this for free for the remainder of your subscription by switching to direct debit. This would be £15.50 quarterly and the first payment wouldn’t be taken until your current subscription ends. If you did this it would mean that you start getting access to the digital downloads as well as the Online Archive (which you'll be able to access for the remainder of your current subscription). B/ You would only be able to download issues from the point at which you upgrade. If you wish to buy any individual back issues downloads then these are available in the App Store/Google Play/Amazon (for Kindle Fire) dating back to September 2012. Individual digital issues can also be purchased via **LINK**. Best wishes, Kate |
