Thread: Oil v. Grease |

Neil Thank you for your remarks about greasing mini-lathe roller bearings. Eventually I'll follow the Arc Euro guide and replace the spindle bearings, but for this first lathe strip down I'll give it a miss. George

Many thanks to the four gentlemen who responded to my enquiry. I shall avoid using grease, and use an oil instead on the slideways. Martin W's mention of Mobil Vactra 2 was particularly helpful, and I'm now off to purchase some! Thank you again. GeorgeW

I have been reading Arc Euro's very useful "Mini-Lathe Preparation Guide". The Guide shows the various lathe bearings and surfaces that are to be cleaned, oiled and greased with an appropriate lubricant. The one and only thing that I know about lubrication is that oil will flow, and is taken into rotating bearings by capillary action. Are there any simple rules as to whether a bearing/surface should be oiled or greased? When are oil and grease suitable alternatives for each other? Thank you. GeorgeW |
Thread: Stepper Motor Cable Length |

Thank you for your response. It helps settle a niggling doubt in my mind.
After reading your reply, and giving it two seconds thought, it is now obvious that the sizes of the beds & tables used in some Mach 3 router & plasma cutter CNC configurations are larger than the typical model engineering lathe & mill dimensions. I have never read of special action to cope with the longer cables used in such set ups.
Thank you again.

I have followed Tony Jeffree's MEW articles, and built a 4 axes stepper motor drive unit. The plan is to fit CNC first to a lathe, and then eventually a mill. The drive unit is housed back to back with a desk top PC in an enclosed MDF box, to give some protection from coolant spray and dust. (A fan provides ventilation.)
The unit has worked perfectly in a small test rig. However, on the bench a basic problem has occured; the unit is not a good fit between the lathe and mill! This means that instead of having the unit central with cables 1 - 1.5m long, the unit must be placed to one side requiring some cables 3m long.
I have spent a little time searching the web looking for comment on CNC cable problems. In summary, most problems were concerned with not using shielded cable for signal & power cables, and not grounding the outer once at the drive unit end. I could not see any problems relating to cable length. (Do the adjectives shielded, screened, shrouded & sheathed all mean the same thing?)
Tony Jeffree's design uses shielded cable. For signal cable I have used screened audio cable from Maplin. The power cable is RS 4 core shrouded, 16 x 0.2mm. The largest stepper motor is an ArcEuro 220Ncm rated 2.5A/phase.
I would appreciate any comments about problems that are likely to occur if I use 3m power cables.
Thank you

Thread: Help needed in finding a Website |

Yes!
I could not remember either Peter Patient's name or the website address. Any search criteria I used failed to narrow the search down to reasonable size. Moral of the story - write things down!
You posted your reply in under 10 minutes!
Thank you

Some time ago, an article in Model Engineers' Workshop referenced a U.K. website. The site had been set up by a technology lecturer, and was aimed at providing schools with information on CNC machining (I think). Sadly the gentleman had died, but site was left in tact to continue his good work.
I failed to "favorite" the web address, and have lost the link. Even after an interesting couple hours reading a few dozen back issues of MEW, I have not located the original article.
I would appreciate any help in finding either the web address or the MEW issue number with that article.
Thank you.
