Thread: Why is it so hard to find materials in the UK? |

Thanks for all the suggestions - I will get onto them tomorrow.

I have been looking to buy some grade 2 Titanium tube at 38mm (1 1/2) and 31.75mm (1 1/2) with a wall thickness of 3mm (approx) and boy what a job it's turned out to be. No one (apart from a firm who want £140 a metre for grade 9) seems to have any in the UK. A friend got some 31.75mm ti earlier this year for approx £35 a metre which was a good price.
So then I started looking at high grade aluminium e.g the same OD with a slightly higher wall thickness in 7075-T6 aluminium and I hit the same wall...
Now of you go to China, USA, Germany, Russia and any number of smaller Countries you can get it - but not the UK.
Does anyone know of a decent supplier for either of these? I initially need a few metres for stress/pressure testing then a bigger order.
thanks |
Thread: Bench grinder/polisher/shapener advice |

Martin
I was in similar position ans posed a similar Q last week.
I was just about to go for the Record bench grinder - with a 5 year warrenty it looks excellent value and is low cost and will almost certainly do all I need - I just consigned myself to the fact that I would have to make a better tool rest.
However at the last moment I thought 'so what'... (re cost), and went mad and ordered a Creusen HP7500TS Powerline Grinder (Slow Speed).
Should arrive tomorrow.
Please let me know what you think asap. I like the idea of the HP7500TS + the extension spindle http://www.axminster.co.uk/creusen-creusen-extension-spindle-r-h-prod21052/?src=froogle so I can put a polishing mop on it. Then to any big grinding I'll pick up a cheap throw away grinder fom machinemart. If the HP7500 is OK I'd just need a drill bit sharpening rest - would the standard do? or should a get a more specialised rest?
thanks

Hi Martin
Look for Tormek grinder. This grinder runs at low speed and will never burnt out the hardness of the HSS...also building your very own grinder to sharpen mill cutters and drill bits?
I did and tested my grinder with good result. My design has the influence of Quorn and Deckel SO. Visit Steve's workshop photo album.
Steve
A little too involved for me Im afraid I need something off the shelf. Nice tho thanks

I would be sizing the grinder to the predominant type of work you will be using it for.
The 200mm grinder takes 100mm sewn mops very well. I used them extensively for polishing stainless and found I could really push the knife into the mop without slowing down the grinder. When I put on 150mm mops, I find, naturally enough, that it is easier to load the motor.

Hi thanks for the replies - my primary use will be for sharpening HSS tool bits and HSS drill bits - I do very little heavy grinding (if at all). My main worry is buying a grinder that is too harsh for drill bits (I do a lot of mild steel and Stainless drilling).
*** oooh forgot I do need to be able to ploish stainless as well
Hence I would also need advice of type of stones needed.
@Steve
Building your own? not something I'd thought of. Any info on your poject? Edited By Martin Brundell on 16/05/2011 13:33:40 Edited By Martin Brundell on 16/05/2011 13:34:13 |

Thread: WM280VF Fixed steady |
06/05/2011 18:53:10 |
Perhaps because they sell their verison of the wm280vf not supplied with the steadies, then sell them on for extra? ![]() |
06/05/2011 18:15:29 |
Yep - I saw the same thing and double checked with him. They havent actually got the 280 fixed steady listed, but it was the same price ![]() |
06/05/2011 18:06:13 |
Update: Emails Warco and they wanted £65 + £7.50 p&p + vat
= A total of £85.50 for the fixed steady..........
Rang AMADEAL and they wanted £19 + £9.50 p&p inc vat = total £28.50
For EXACTLY the same part.
Got some moxy those Warco chaps. Needless to say i got the warco one. |

Thread: Internal threading on Alu tube problem. |

Right great thread and thanks for the info - working on it now.
thanks

Right got it as I have seen the adjuster on the boring head
![]() Do you know anywhere that does a straight boring head arbor?
brill thanks again |
03/05/2011 20:59:04 |
Trying to digest this - i get the idea of the tube locked into a wooden holder on the slide (ingenius) - however struggling with the boring tool holder. Does that actually spin in the headstock? How do you change thread depth?
thanks Edited By Martin Brundell on 03/05/2011 21:02:12 |

Hi, got a bit of a problem I need to find a solution for:
I have several 350mm x 38mm OD x 35mm ID Aluminium tubes that I need to put a 0.75 metric thread inside the ends (10 - 15mm depth). I have a wm280VF lathe that only has a 26mm spindle bore.
I dont currently have a fixed steady (looking to get one) but even if I did would it help?
Advice please on the best approach as I have never done anything like this before. (I've threaded externally and internally on small stuff using the lathe)
thanks |
Thread: Cross slide lifts when parting off |
03/05/2011 18:28:53 |
Brilliant Jason - thank you |
03/05/2011 18:15:25 |
UPDATE:
Thanks to all for your suggestions and help - I've cracked it!!! (well you cracked it)
Took the crossslide off cleaned up and re-seated, upped the speed to 250rpm - this alone helped, it worked 50% better after that but still flexing slightly.
I then reduced the tool overhang and made sure the toolpost was more central. 75% better.
Then I inverted the parting tool, reversed the chuck rotation - 85% better
Then I dug out my carbide tipped parting tool (3mm tip) that I have never been able to use because it chattered like a bugger, inverted. PERFECT - went through it like butter!!!
Thanks again for all your help - I am a happy bunny again!
PS has anyone got a turning speed chart for EN1A - 303 free cutting stainless etc in RPM??? All I can find is metres or feet and I can't find out how to translate.
Again thanks, it really is much appreciated

Yes this is the exact machine I have Edited By Martin Brundell on 03/05/2011 14:08:19 |

Hi Jason, my cutting blade is 2mm and is square (I square it with the chuck face).
500rpm - I can only dream of parting off at that speed LOL
I will take the cross-slide off tomorrow and clean it all out - thanks for the tips. |
02/05/2011 17:59:58 |
BTW thanks for the replies - I am taking it all in slowly.
Been at it all day so going to try again tomorrow now. It just seems like the gibs mechanisn isnt doing much apart from making the cross-side stiffer to operate, it does not seem to be locking the topslide down much at all.
thanks again |
