Thread: Cebtec 2A Backlash Adjustment |
01/03/2011 17:01:54 |
Thats a great link, thank you.
I'm not sure a half nut would have the required strength |
01/03/2011 15:17:25 |
OK I understand now that its a half nut and there should be a lever to disconnect it when using the lever to move the bed.
Its no longer lever operated.
Having adjusted the half nut as tight as possible there is less backlash but still around 15 out of 100 on the graduated dial.
I dont have any screw cutting facilities to make a new one so will need to find one. Any ideas anyone on where to get one please

Thread: Sheared Drawbar |

What does that do (sorry if its obvious) |
17/02/2011 22:32:10 |
I will need to make a new drawbar, I will have 5 drawbars for one machine, 2 horizontal and 3 vertical.
Can you clarify your idea please, are you saying a round shear groove could be cut above the point of thread entry so if it should break it will allow something with which the stub could be removed, or a long groove along the length of the thread. |

Well its finally out, thanks to everyone that gave advice.
Just so you know I ground the broken abor until I could just see where the thread was then soaked it in penetrating fluid for 48 hours and used an easy out, it came out fairly easily in the end.
The odd thing is; its a 3/8 BSW thread, (I can post a photo if needed) I suspect theres a contributing reason the old one was stuck. |
Thread: Cebtec 2A Backlash Adjustment |

How do you adjust the backlash on the Centec 2A, I think its the X axis (east-west). I can see a bronze collar that the lead screw runs in and a bronze coloured nut that stands proud which is very tight, I dont want to force it |
Thread: Sheared Drawbar |
15/02/2011 21:11:06 |
I'm sure the thread is 3/8 however the blank stem of the drawbar is 8mm, which it needs to be to pass through a Centec spindle.
Thanks for the suggestions, however I will try the Dremmel followed by 24 hours of penetrating fluid before the next step though.
Its obviously been broken a long time and its likely the previous ownwer broke the drawbar trying to undo it so its probably very stuck |
15/02/2011 15:43:27 |
I followed the advice and put a flat on the end of the broken part and drilled through with a 4mm carbide drill and followed this with a 7mm carbide drill.
I can now see where the thread is however I cant shift what remains of it.
I believe the drawbar is 3/8 UNF thread and requires a tap drill of 8.2mm, the most I think I can go to is about 8mm.
I dont want to buy another carbide drill if its not going to shift, does anyone have any other suggestions please. |

Posted by IanH on 10/02/2011 22:52:24: Just picking up on the "damping ring" the damping ring makes a fine puller to pull the chuck out of the taper. Plenty of chucks do without them but having one makes your collet chuck superior in that if nothing else it provide a means for you to remove the chuck without beating your spindle to death again in the future.
Thanks for the explanation, I understand now.
Unfortunately the Centec dosnt have any flats on the spindle, only 2 C nuts at the top to adjust the backlash. The ring is also stuck tight on the chuck.
I suspect the chuck, ring and broken drawbar have been in for many years without being moved. I've had the machine for a year and just started to sort it out, it was filthy and I thought looking nehlected. |

Sorry, meant to say slot drill, I've got a couple on the way. I was asking because I thought a slot drill could plunge into the work. |

Hi There
Use a small cardbide slot drill.
Spotface a flat on the end of the drawbar.
If you can, raise the table rather than bring the quill down.
Very slowly spot face it.
You should be able to drill it out then.
Drawbars should not be that hard, they will break.
regards david
David, how deep would the spot drill be able to go into the stub, far enough to enable a carbide drill to complete the job?
Thank you Edited By Steve Taylor 2 on 10/02/2011 20:43:23 |

Yes its definately out of the machine, I thought it was going to beat me.
I might try to grind the end down as its just below the rim of the end of the taper, if I had a carbide spot dril I would do it that way.
Thanks for everyones input Edited By Steve Taylor 2 on 10/02/2011 20:05:01 |

I have a 2MT Carkson collet that the drawbar has sheared off. The end in the collet taper is stuck firm, very rough, extremely hard and broken below the end of the taper.
I cant drill it with carbide because its not flat or mill it with HSS tooling, any ideas are welcome please.
I have seen a replacement for sale but it dosnt have the large collar (damping ring) with 3 holes for a tommy bar, is the collar essential? |
Thread: Centec with Clarkson Collet |
10/02/2011 18:31:00 |
The head spent 2 hours in the oven at 60c then I froze the chuck with the freezer spray used by plumbers and after 40 blows onto a copper bar I gave it a final blow directly onto the drawbar and out it came. Now I can finally look at getting the sheared drawbar out of the chuck! New thread started |

I have a Centec 2A with the vertical attachment and the small Clarkson autolock collet.
As I have a full set of ER25 collets for a dividing head I would like to swap out the clarkson collet holder and fit an ER25 collet holder. They are both 2MT fitting but the clarkson dosnt want to come out.
I've heard of these being extremely tight, however I'm told it should come out with persistent hammering of the drawbar. I have heard the damping ring on the collet holder needs to be slackened also.
I beat the living daylights out of it using a lump hammer with a copper bar on the drawbar, no luck. For the moment I have given up, all the hammering has somehow moved the spindle and I now have endshake of a couple of mills that I cant adjust out.
Anyone help please? Anyone in the North West? |
