Thread: Meddings Dril Tru
20/07/2012 11:44:40

A piece of cake, its now got a nice new ROHM chuck on that has no run out.

Thanks for all the advice

16/07/2012 15:30:41

Meddings were very helpful, they stopped making this machine in 1979 and the chuck is almost certainly original. They suggest using the wedges and a good soak in penetrating fluid.

I now have a pair of wedges and the chuck is soaking in penetrating fluid overnight, so hopefully its going to come off tomorrow!

10/07/2012 16:11:32

Thanks for all the info, wedges on the way, will let you know if I'm successful

10/07/2012 13:49:22

Thank you thats helpful

I'm wandering how to remove the chuck & arbor from the machine, there isnt a slot where you would insert a conventional drift I suspect it will need a forked drift like a ball joint splitter but this may need a lot of force and I dont want to damage the spindle

10/07/2012 11:52:40

I have a Meddings dril tru bench pillar drill with 5 speeds via stepped pulleys. Serial number DT1237. Its a superb machine in daily use.

It has a ROHM chuck marked 1/32 - 3/8 B16, so I assume the chuck has a B16 mount and the I believe the spindle is a 2MT.

The chuck is worn and I would like to replace it, I would welcome some advice on how to do this please

Thread: Harrison Lead Screw Nut
29/05/2012 12:36:01

Does anyone have the spec for the lead screw & nut, its around 30 inch long and around 3/4 inch diameter

23/05/2012 11:57:31

Thanks for the help, so far no good.

The part numbers are

MH1-4-50 imperial nut (the one I need)

MH1-4-45 imperial leadscrew

I tried 600UK they say they havent had them for 20 years, they dont have any drawings either.

I saw the acetal thread before, if I cant find one it will be the only solution, however getting the table on and off to measure the nut isnt something I can manage alone.

I havent seen any on the auction site, there are some for the Harrison lathe cross slides

26/04/2012 09:24:33

Does anyone know where to find lead screw nut for the X slide on a Harrison milling machine, please

Thread: Glanze 30 Int Arbor
21/05/2011 20:55:56

I recently bought a Glanze 40mm end mill on a 30 Int arbor,
unfortunately it dosnt fit my spindle (Harrison universal mill) because the
slots where the driving lugs fit are too narrow. All my other 30 Int arbors
have slots that are wide enough.

When I check the spec for 30 Int arbors the slots are not
specified, so I'm trying to understand if Glanze have made a mistake or there
are narrower slots in use and therefore I should either open the slots on the
arbor or make a pair of lugs specially for this arbor.

Thread: Harrison Universal Milling Machine Vertical Head
01/05/2011 20:31:04
Ive overcome the biggest problem by removing the small cowell at the back of the machine as it prevents the drawbar from being removed, once its off and the drawbar removed the bolts will screw straight in.

The tip of supporting the head on a block of wood on the table is a good one, thanks.
30/04/2011 14:33:44
Does any one have any experience with swapping this machine from horizontal to vertical ie mounting the vertical head.
The vertical head is bolted to the main column by 4 allen bolts and fits into the 30 int taper thats also used for horizontal milling.

The issues are the weight of the head which makes it very awkward and the fact that the shared drawbar seems to be held captive. the arrangement means the bolts and drawbar each need to be adjusted a tiny bit at a time.

The entire arrangement seems wrong, presently all the bolts and drawbar are tight and its not fully seated against the column. I'm unwilling to continue tightening as it may cause damage.
Thread: Clarkson Collet Threads?
18/04/2011 12:33:28
Hi Chris, thanks for explaining that for me. I dont have screw cutting facilities, my biggest lathe is a Schaublin 102 plain centre lathe but at least I can try the Tracy tool route.
18/04/2011 10:53:57
OK, I think I'm missing something here.
Yes its fine if you thread a 1/4" bar with a 1/4" BSW die as its 20TPI, and it screws into the 1/4" Clarkson collet perfectly.

However if I need to use a 3/8 or 1/2" bar, and collet, the TPI is 16 & 12 respectiveley.
17/04/2011 10:06:54
Does any one know which threads are are used in the clarkson small S type collets, metric and/or imperial.
I need to make an arbor to carry a small horizontal cutter which I would like to hold in a Clarkson collet.
I've tried BSF, BSW and Metric and 3/8 UNF, none of them are right
Thread: Harrison Universal Milling Machine Feed Gears & 3Phase
16/04/2011 15:03:28
Progress

Thanks to Dennis Ribbons of www.dgrdesigns.co.uk/ I now have the 3 missing pick off gears on their way.

I decided the 3 phase solution offered by Drives Direct is the best one as I can effectively use the phase converter to power other 3 phase equipment in the workshop, which I couldnt if it was wired in directly. I have a Schaublin lathe with an old DC motor and controller that really needs changing and a Swiss 3 phase motor for a Hauser pivot burnishing machine.

Still unsure about the coolant tank, "Does anyone have an easy way of cleaning out the coolant tank or is that a waste of effort"

Thanks to everyones input so far.
14/04/2011 19:48:10
My apologies I have just found a small plate on the side of the feed gear box that has all the pick gears listed and the inch per minute rate, I have listed these if anyone needs them.
A B Inches per Minute
64 17 0.89
59 22 1.25
52 29 1.87
43 38 3.0
38 43 3.8
29 52 6.0
22 59 9.0
17 64 12.6

The missing ones are17, 34 & 38T.
Can anyone supply or make these gears
Where do I find a chart for feed speed referring to material and I suppose relating to cutter size and depth of cut
14/04/2011 18:48:07
I recently acquired a Harrison Universal Milling Machine, which seems to be a real beauty, however there are a couple of questions I would like some help with.

1\ there appear to be some feed gears missing and I dont know what they should be, also the manual dosnt state what feed speed gears you would achive with each combination.
The ones I have are 59T 52T 43T 22T 29T. I can see that 59 and 22 are a pair as are 52 and 29, I dont know what 43 would combine with and what feeds I would be able to get.

2\ the machine has 3 motors, main spindle motor 2HP, feed motor 1/8HP and coolant pump 1/8HP. All are single voltage 380/440v 3 phase and there is contactor/zero volt switchgear.
I know I need a 240v single phase in to a 415v 3 phase output invertor. Having talked with a well known Invertor supplier in Nottingham it seems I need to either wire the motors directly to there own invertor or use a particular type (described as MA5 plug & play) so the existing wiring and contactors can be used.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct as its an expensive option

3\ Does anyone have an easy way of cleaning out the coolant tank or is that a waste of effort?
Thread: ELLIOTT Omnimil
10/03/2011 08:07:03
Does anyone use an ELLIOTT Omnimil.

I currently have a Centec 2A with both vertical and horizontal heads, having spent some time getting the machine in to good workable condition and using it I can say its a nice compact machine.
The only real drawbacks are the position of the knee handwheel and the size of the table limiting the vices that can be used.

However, as is often the case, once its all sorted and had a little use the mind starts to think of the next project.
I'm thinking of the ELLIOTT Omnimil, its universal, which is very important to me, its more substantial yet still relativeley compact.
Thread: Cebtec 2A Backlash Adjustment
03/03/2011 18:31:22
The Y axis has 20 thou backlash in the middle and 8 thou at each end, where its also tight.
The Y axis nut is bronze and could be replaced using the delron method but its not worth the effort unless the leadscrew is changed at the same time.

The X axis is 15 thou consistently along its travel, but there isnt enough space for anything other than a half nut so it needs a authentic half nut replacement. or a new one making, tapping and cutting (in half)

Thanks for everyones advice, I've decided to leave it as it is, I can cope with the backlash and I know how much it is. It dosnt seem worth spending a small fortune on leadscrews and so on
01/03/2011 19:49:11
I'm not sure how it would mount Bryan.
Looking at the photo below thats the entire nut, there isnt a top half as its pushed up against the leadscrew, so I cant see how it would insert.
The only ways I can see it working is if I made a new carrier for it or filed out the existing one, which leaves me with no way back
