Steve, in the same spirit, I've been into computers since the 8080 (actually the 4040 in a small way). I've run CP/M, DRDOS, MSDOS and every version of Windows from Win3.0 and WWG through Win10 (yes, including Win10) - except Vista. Not to mention Unix and Qnx (in a business environment) and even a smattering of Linux. I've been connected to the global internet virtually since day-1

My paranoia on both the security and obsolescence fronts is more moderate.

I'll stick with Win8.1 thanks,

Isn't that why the tern "Value Added" was invented in the first place?

Well my mind certainly was and it was my (apparently mis) understanding that iPadOS would force something like that on the user so I stayed with regular iOS (reactionary, stick-in-the-mud).

As far as the recent update goes, I tried it on my spare iPad. Although the update is billed as iPadOS 13.5.1 it seems it actually installs either the iPadOS or iOS update as appropriate to whatever OS version you already have installed.

(Keyboard melting due to excessive use of the shift key with Apple software naming).

But, if you're happy in the belief that MS is altruistic enough to update everyone to the latest OS (one of their major sources of revenue historically - but who's counting) for nothing then more power to you. My belief (I'm not the only one) is that, when they have enough users they will switch to a subscription model. It's the modern way and gives a far, far greater return. Moreover it may not be as simple as "we send you a bill once a year". It may well be "you give us your Bank-AC/credit card number and we'll take care of the rest - every month or the thing stops working".

And yes, W10 is still available free (or was a few weeks ago - I doubt that's changed) and certainly is for those that avail themselves of the "update" that I mentioned at the start of this thread.

Thanks, Michael looks like I was a bit off there. As long as I can use my own wallpaper and not one of those ghastly (to me) Apple versions.

I hadn't thought before but I have a spare, somewhat earlier, iPad Mini (Mini is what I mainly use these days as far as iPads go). So I'm going to let it update and see what I think.

My other hang-up is what happened a couple of years ago after a major IOS update. More than half my (mostly free) apps stopped working and more than half of those were never updated. What I gained in the OS update didn't nearly compensate for what I lost in the apps.

Old Mart .... no thanks. Tried it twice and didn't like it. Nor do I want to end up in a subscription model.

Michael ... I don't recall the details other than that there is some app installed that takes away your option of setting your own screen background in favour of a horrible red/orange one that is demanded by the app. I'll see if I can dig up where I got that from. If you're using iPadOS and aren't aware of it, maybe I got hold of the wrong end of the stick. What other irritations have you noticed.

If you go to the More Information link it seems to be an "Upgrade" to Windows-10 that they are trying to slide past unwary users - again. Presumably anyone who has automatic updates turned on gets upgraded automatically.

Even Microsoft's own definition states:

- An update ensures you have the most recent features and security improvements for your current version of Windows.

- An upgrade moves your PC from a previous version of Windows—such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.1—to Windows 10.

Not the first time they've tried this .... it's why I always check.

Apple is as bad. A few months ago they bought out a version of ios specifically tailored for iPad but stated that you didn't have to use that path - you could keep on using the original ios stream (which I chose). Since then though all the upgrades would also convert me to the IOSipad version - complete with Apple taking over (apparently) the screen graphics. And it nags me to death as only Apple can if I don't comply.

Aren't multiple topic categories needed to constrain the responses to those that are on-topic for that category/thread?

If you get rid of the topic categories it just becomes one big "Tea Room" and although it's already treated that way by the few, the majority are more reasonable.

You don't say where you are "across the pond" Damien ... Canada?, USA? S. America?

In Canada, used Myfords, while perhaps not plentiful, are often to be had. If you are in an urban centre it helps. Try Kijiji or Craigslist.

Don't know about US ... I suspect it's more difficult there but you could try Craigslist.

You could also put a want-ad in Craiglist/Kijiji.

There used to be a technique in these cases to give them a quick blip of cold spray to slow them up for a few seconds/minutes. After which they seemed to proceed as normal (probably non-pc these days notwithstanding).

[ Cold spray was stuff in a spray can that repair technicians used to cool transistors et al as an aid to trouble shooting. Still available? ]

Re: dragonflies, Years ago, in film days, I found an article - might have been on the internet or magazine, not sure - about someone who stacked a bunch of relatively cheap telephoto converter tubes, paired them with his camera and mounted the whole lot to a heavy-duty tripod. He would sit around marshland and take pics of dragonflies in full flight.

A lot of armchair photographers pooh-poohed his optics but he sure got the best (and most colourful) dragonfly pics that I've ever seen.

I bought the dials and the friction springs that match. I made simple adapters to fit them to the ML7 and they can turn continuously against the spring-friction. So re-settable. I believe that's how they are used in their original machines.

These are standard spares for common machines, which machines are probably available in the UK and elsewhere. So it's possible the dials are available too. I didn't mean to imply he should get them from LMS (necessarily). It was just an easy place to point the link at showing the ones I used.

You could also look at dials that are available as spares fore current small machines - imported mills and lathes.

I fitted these from LMS to my ML7 but you could probably find something similar locally.

Raymond, you could also go here and take a look at StereoPhoto Maker ... as well as the other offerings. All freeware.

At the bottom of the SPM page are numerous links to tutorials et al.

I've always use a small (real) brass wire brush for nozzle cleaning. It was recommended on my original (long gone unfortunately) DaVinci printer and I've done it that way ever since.

I was in and out of there as a a student-apprentice from 1961. Our group (five of us, I think) did the design & drawings for that Quadricycle reproduction, whilst the toolroom apprentices built the parts under the ... er .... able ... direction of one 'arry Buckle.
