Standard Instrument securing thread in the UK is 5/8" x 11 Tpi. Whit. form. There is another US style at 11/16 " x 11 Tpi. This is mainly used in Aircraft building, test equipment.. Also some military applications, just to be awkward I think.

That's the wonderful thing about standards. You can have as many as you want. laugh

Thread: Another scam

My confidential waste usually goes into the firebox of a standard gauge locomotive at a heritage railway near me.

Not overly green but very very secure. smiley

Once the die holder leaves the guide it does have a bit of wobble but if that is not a problem then it is certainly quick. I think I would go with Duncan’s plan that does not involve any living clamps.

Mike

I agree far better not to hold the die-holder under power, but in fairness at least the OD of the holder is smooth so less likely to cause injury.

From the other threads isn't it the case that he does eventually supply the parts just really slow and haphazard in the way he runs the business. Some of it is also due to the fact that castings are made in batches only occasionally.
It is a real pity he doesn't either sell some of the designs to someone with a suitable business record or get in a partner to help.

Edit: by the way it is better not to put your email on the open web for spammers to harvest. People can contact you using the PM system. The mods can remove the details if you ask nicely.

Edited By Bazyle on 01/07/2019 13:25:55

I'm looking for designs that are now out of copyright with a view to producing castings for same. I'd also be happy to discuss taking on some of those designs if the terms are right.

Thread: Advice on tracking down potential buyer.
01/07/2019 13:04:03

In the "For Sale" I section recently advertised a surplus copy of a model engineering book.
I received a response from a potential buyer to which I replied to both via this site and the e-mail he sent. Since then I've heard nothing. Have I done something wrong?

If that gentleman is still interested please get in touch or let me know you are no longer interested so I may re-advertise it.

Many thanks in advance.

Don't be tempted to name and shame prematurely. It might prejustice your case.

Thread: Boiler cross tube leak.

Full size boilers are rather different. Firstly they are steel, which rusts and tends to seal any very small leaks, second they have rivetted lap joints, so you have a long leak path. . . . . . .

Although they do usually have riveted lap joints the majority of fireboxes are copper. There are one or two "new builds" that have gone down the welded steel route with "variable" results.

Thread: Chinese tacho - beware

Posted by duncan webster on 21/06/2019 22:50:02:

I've never suggested that the Chinese ones were rubbish, in fact it looks quite well made, the problem is the update rate. if you just want to measure the speed of a steadily rotating shaft they are fine, for adjusting something which has a high acceleration not so good.

If you send me a pm I'll try to find the schematic of my home brewed one, you can certainly have photos and the code, but it does involve soldering a very simple stripboard circuit. However my hard drive can be a little difficult to navigate (chaos might be a better description), so it might take a couple of days

Duncan

The organisation of your filing system is similar to mine. However you took a somewhat different route than I am taking to resolve the problem.

I'm investigating the possibility of decreasing the sample time and increasing the number of pulses sampled by increasing the number of magnets passing the Hall effect device.

Whether or not will be successful remains to be seen.

Posted by Haggerleases on 06/06/2019 13:24:59:

It's one of the reasons I'm starting out in model engineering. Sold all my model aircraft stuff in a funk of annoyance and decided to plough my money into a lathe, a drilling machine and so on. Surely to God they can't legislate against that!

I wouldn't be surprises if the Whitehall Mandarins try.
