Under a fiver, did you buy that recently?. The cheapest I could find was click and collect at W H Smiths £6.26.

On my machines:

windows 10 + edge browser = pressing the ENTER key performs a carriage return only (ie cursor goes to start of line).

windows 10 + firefox browser = pressing ENTER key performs a carriage return (ie cursor goes to start of line) plus 2 line feeds.

It is very annoying that i get 2 linefeeds in this editor window!

And since when has pressing SHIFT+ENTER been the way to perform a CR+LF. It goes against convention.

I've noticed that line feeds sometimes get stripped out of emails when the email is transported across different platforms. The format of the line breaks gets messed up, and the composition looks all wrong.

These 'new kid on the block' programmers are changing convention (because they can and because it seems a good idea to them). It is leading to chaos.

They were discussing issues they were having with their server a couple of days ago. I'm under the impression that, due to ongoing problems, they are looking at alternatives.

+1 for the temperature controlled irons (an old 60w station from Maplins, around £40). I start off with a low heat setting, and if I find I am struggling, I keep turning up the heat, a little at a time until the job heats up and the solder flows. First priority, make sure the work is clean and uncoated

The magnets have come in handy in and out of the shop for picking stuff up. The ones I had started to decompose after a year or two. At first it looked like a chrome plate pealing off, however, a months/year after that the whole thing crumbled and disintegrated. The flat shiny disks look too useful and shiny to throw away, but I have not found a use for them yet! One day I will make a foundry and melt the scrap aluminum pile ... one day.

Any equipment I buy comes with a user manual. At the of top the manual is the safety instructions section, don't do this, don't do that, wear this, wear that. I skim through these out of choice and concentrate on the good stuff in other parts of the manual. If the instructions in the manual for an electric drill says, 'do no immerse in water', then I roll my eyes, and move on, but I don't take umbrage at that because it is my choice to read the H&S warnings. If I am reading a 'how to' or a build article and have lots of H&S thrown at me then I take umbrage as I feel I am being patronized.

I agree entirely Jon.

If a 'newbie' has the nous to research a lathe or mill, and then buy the said lathe and mill, then I would think he has read enough to know about the pitfuls and safety issues in the workshop. If he is an idiot and doesn't have regard for safety then he deserves the first electrical shock or flying chuck key he gets, as it will teach a valuable lesson.

I suppose the mag has a duty of care.

My front door is half glass. I leave the hall light on. When they knock I just go and stand behind the door. I just stand there, I don't move and I don't say a word. Eventually they stop shouting and knocking, and walk away confused and silent. I'm known as the 'weird guy at number 21'.

I was often sent round the shop to get sweets, and half ounce of Golden Virginia for my Dad. I was only 8 and was never refused the tobacco!

Started buying 5 Park Drive for myself, for a shilling, at aged 12. I then moved on to 10 No6. After that I started on 20 Senior Service (no filter). Happy days!

I hear you. You just don't know what they will do.

The last lot I had in was 20 years ago. After an attempted break in I had to get an alarm system fitted fast. The local company I went with specifically said they pride themselves on concealing the cables. I came home one night and found they had run a PIR cable around the door architrave. The cable was stapled ON THE INSIDE of the architrave, right next to the bl##dy door! I've done it all myself since then. I'm even considering fitting the double glazing myself as I don't trust what people tell me.

I used to get involved in a house diy builds. The clients were handy enough to do the general work, and just called in tradesmen for the days when they were out of their depth. On the heating systems, I used to fit the boilers and do the gas work, wiring, and commissioning etc. They would do all the pipework and fit the rads etc. I generally just came along and advised when required. If you know what the job entails, can you get hold of some cheap labourers and just oversee the work, and pay a tradesman on the odd days when you need advice?

What Nick_G said sounds about right.

Lady over the road from me had 2 retired kitchen fitters in and they charged £110 each a day. A general handyman/builder type tradesman, just down the road from me, charges £140 a day.

I always get a minimum of 3 prices for everything I buy. Also applies if I have to get a contractor in (which is rare).

My daughter keeps getting messed about by Hermes (she orders stuff online non stop!) . Hermes continually fail to deliver her stuff. Their recent proof of 'our attempted delivery' was a photo of a Piri Piri shop (that is further down the road) and her package. Seems like they employ idiots who don't give a monkeys.

I think it is new, pretty sure it was not there a few weeks ago. it amazed me that edge did not have it!

Yeah, the install took a couple of hours on a tablet. Generally, this does not bother me in the least. This time however, I was closing the machine down and preparing to leave site when it decided to force the install, which was very inconvenient to say the least.

On the positive side there is now the option to clear browsing history when Edge is closed.

Win 10 on a tablet, that's what it is all about

I supply software that uses Excel automation in some parts of the programs.. I have had several users call me in the last week because the win 10 install has messed up the Excel automation..I'm not too sure, but I think new dlls are being installed and are not being registered correctly.

The usual shallow crap. I didn't expect anything else, really.

I reckon this has crossed a line, though I do like it when it kicks off!

My advice, restore it, and quickly pass it on to some 'lucky little lady'.
