Thread: Myford S7 Spindle Nose / Chuck fitting.
30/08/2011 11:39:09
Clarification needed !

As I understand it the ground axial portion of the spindle nose is the register which accurately locates the chuck.

However I have tried a number of chucks, supplied by Myfords (even on their new lathes that have recently been in the sale) and the chucks seem to be a 'loose' fit on the register when being screwed on.

Surely the fit should a slight interference fit to maintain the chucks accuracy, especially when work is removed with the chuck for secondary work and then returned to the lathe.

Having also measured this 'register' on two lathes there seems to be a 0.0005" taper towards the threaded portion.

Any comments gratefully received.
Thread: Myford online auction
27/08/2011 10:20:43
According to my tally some of the hammer prices were as follows, so absolutely no bargains then!

Item 758 S7B+ £4900
Item 759 S7 Conn. £5100
Item 760 S7B £4550
Item 763 S7B+ £ £4500
Item 765 S7B £4850

All the above + 15.5% + 20%
Some had parts missing, or not finalised & inspected, one was metric.

Interestingly some of these prices were more than the liquidators were willing to sell for at their sale and at that time they promised the lathes would be completed as they were going to keep on some original Myford staff for this purpose.

The Nuto H32 oils fetched very high prices, above the price I have been quoted for 20litre drums, and on a par with the full retail prices after the commission & VAT have been added.

Ah well end of another era!

Just been looking at the Peak Pattison online auction of the remains of Myford.
Plenty of Myford lathes still for sale, although some seem to be lacking parts.
Beware 15.5% & VAT add ons and normal registration for an individual confines you to £200 max bid unless you make special provision with the auctioneers.
Didn't see many computers for sale!!
Thread: Myford Connoisseur Lathe
18/07/2011 09:36:29
Thanks for everyone's comments, so it looks like the METRIC Myford Connoisseur lathe does need a metric banjo and gears.

But, does anyone know if a metric banjo and gears from a Super 7B will fit the METRIC Myford Connoisseur lathe.

Thanks for replying Neil,
Would a metric quadrant be necessary on a metric connoisseur?
Regards,
Steve

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if a METRIC Myford Connoisseur lathe has an imperial 8tpi leadscrew and if so does a metric conversion quadrant and gears have to be used to cut metric threads?

If a quadrant is required is this identical to that used on an imperial Super 7B to cut metric threads?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many

Well, from John Stevenson’s post I can see why he is interested in CNC articles and I do not dispute the number of CNC machines out there. This must support the view that a separate magazine dedicated to CNC is required.>>

>>

John also raises the interesting point that early editions of MEW had 15 project subjects per edition and this has now dropped to 10!!>>

>>

From a personal viewpoint I have no engineering background and started to teach myself around the time MEW first started. So working on the oft quoted basis that you can teach a good engineer to use CNC but can’t easily teach a CNC operative to be a good engineer I feel it will be many years before I can convert to CNC. I am fully in favour of articles on a wide range of engineering subject but believe they should be comprehendible and contain some general engineering information.

Thread: Using DRO's
30/05/2011 17:47:47
Hi Roger,

That's just the information I was seeking.

I've also decided to mount the scale to the front of the table, but need to decide the best way to achieve this and still retail the locks, table stops and electrical stops.

Do you have any photos of your installation?

Incidently although I have been extra careful I'm finding a number of small dings and marks on the table and wonder if the CI is soft. Have you had any problems?

Regards,
Steve T

I am in the process of researching the fitting of DRO's to my Warco VMC mill.

At the moment I use the table limit stops.

Do those of you already having the benefit of DRO's still find you use the table travel stops?

I have been a subscriber to MEW since issue 1, but did not renew my subscription earlier this year because of the number of CNC article.

After a discussion with the editor I did renew my subscription on the understanding that there were to be very few CNC articles in future and a separate CNC mag. was under consideration

I was NOT pleased therefore to see 3 CNC articles in the June edition issue 177
