Thread: Sorting brasses and bronzes etc.
16/03/2012 18:32:11

I dont think there is a generic answer to this question as there are many many types of bronze!

In the 60's I spent many years in the copper industry where we made copper alloys and bronzes and in most case the only quick way was for our sampler to drill a piece and he could usually tell what the generic alloy was. He accomplished this by drilling into the sample with a half inch drill in a drill press. If the sample was brass then the colour would show the alloy and the hardness if it was a bronze but only analysis could definately determine the alloy.

Although some brasses with high tin as an impuruty would be as hard as nails so the drilling would fail but in the end analysis is the only true way.

You can now get hand held xray fluorescence machines that will show the alloy, a bit out of HSM range cost wise.

Sorry for the pessimistic tone but it really is a mine field on alloy determination.

I think the video is showing that the larger the surface area of the scrap Ally the less you will get in the actual melt due to the surface oxidising.

This is why ally turning have so little scrap value, to high an oxidxe content.

Hi Binbag
What is wrong with the CD.
In the past I have good results with Isobuster to read so called unreadable CD's

If the CD is something that I use a lot I load the data onto my harddrive saves wear in the drive as the disk shouldnt be touched by the drive, unless its gone wrong!

You used to be able to get a hot set Araldite, looked like astick of wax.

Just heat the part to be joined and apply till enough was melted, not seen it lately.

Mind you it was 30yrs ago!

Thread: Cadmium, simple test for?
17/12/2011 09:57:42
Just been trawling the web for any answers to this question and stumbled on something I had never thought of.

It would appear that Cadmium is sometimes added to Gold to make jewellry which could answer something that has had me puzzled for some time, in that some people are allergic to Gold jewellry which I always thought was non toxic.

As to the OP question , I dont think there is a simple test for Cd.

Best and cheapest is to cover with something thick and heavy(blanket etc) as this will slow the temperature changes on lathe mill etc.

Rust will form when the temperature drops and any steel objects will be the coldest object around so any water in the air will condense on them. You could also add a low wattage lamp under the covers as this will help in the temperature changes.

Also put plenty of oil on them sort of belt and braces approach.

Thread: What is the purpose of centre drill and how does it work?

I always thought the centre drill was used originally to drill a chamfered pilot hole to accept grease when used with a solid centre when turning between centres!

Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many
15/05/2011 16:36:57
This thread has to me highlighted the problems of any magazine in that you cannot please all the readers all the time.
I happen to have a cnc mill albeit a small one and although as they say into cnc didnt find the articles all that enlightening come to that I do not usually find all that of interest in most of the recent issues but there are usually little snippets of information hidden in the depths of the mag which usually only surface on 2nd or 3rd reread!

My biggest problem is that as a relative novice in engineering terms I dondt know what I dont know if you know what I mean. Biggest of which is in the various methodology in the work holding way, some of these problems are not cured by cnc or even covered in books.
My latesst snippet of knowledge was in finding about the keats block for holding work on the face plate.
My take on this is do the cnc brigade stop getting the mag when there is no cnc related offering as for the last few issues!
Just stop gripping and wait for the next thrilling issue!

Thread: Metal Clay for casting parts?
06/05/2011 08:04:58
Not sure I like the idea that its sintered and not solid.

Also shrinkage can be upto 30% so have to take that into account.

For real jewelary I cannot see it replacing the lost wax process, as once you have the equipment the casting is not that difficult and you only need a gas torch.

For such a naff program with so little usefull content why does it take so many 'back room' bods :-

Production manager
Production Coordinator
Reasearcher
Production Team of 6
Off line editor
On line editor
Dubbing Mixer(or is it down)
Producer
Production Associate
Head of Production
Executive Producer
Executive Producer for BBC
Series Producer
and a Produced and directed by

'Never Have so many done so much to produce so little!'

I think Fred Dibner will be turning in his grave over the poor content!

My guess is its a length continuous cast bronze which can be any alloy and almost any shape.
Try a file but bronze can be fairly hard.
A picture would help.
