Just pull or use a little lever...hold the minute hand and one or the other will come off hopefully the knob |

Fiona
To get the case off to see whats rattling Take the hand knob off the rear of the spindle at the back of the case Remove the finials of the top of the columns Take the cross piece off then the whole clock will lift of the racks then remove the 2 screws next to the hand knob (now removed) Then the back of the case will come off revealing the mechanism.

Thread: Too many magazine subscriptions. |

Oldiron. Have a look at readly its an online magazine subscription service with loads of magazines at a all you can read price of £8 per month 4 machines /people It doesn’t have much in theway of model engineering mags but good selection otherwise and stops the house getting full of dead trees editions (and i say that as someone in the print industry) They do trials too at a lower cost to start Much recommended from this household |

In the independent today What shape is the universe? The Universe is what is known as a hypersphere. A hypersphere is almost impossible to visualise, as it is a four-dimensional sphere – it alters with time. However, you can use the analogy of an onion to describe it quite well. Imagine the universe as it is now, this very instant, to be the outside layer of an onion. If you could look out into the universe as it is now, you would be looking around this shell. If you could look far enough, you would look right round it and see the back of your head. But we cannot look at the universe at this very instant, because as we look out we are looking back in time. You can imagine that everything you are looking at that is at the same distance – say, five light years away – is on the same shell of the onion. The further away you look, the closer you are looking to the centre of the onion. These layers do not exist in this state any more (in terms of place or appearance) as they have moved (with the expansion of the Universe) since the light left them, but this is how we see them. You cannot travel from one side of the outer sphere (the universe as it is now) to the other side through the centre, as the centre is not just empty space; there is no space. You can travel only around the shell itself, as this is where the space exists. Well, we said it was hard to visualise. |
Thread: How would you make these |
07/12/2017 16:34:04 |
I’ve just done some testing on the sample of brass that i’m Using I remembered that i have a 20 degree pointy tool so i measured the original to a set of co-ordinates from base and diameters and using the dro just plunged in to get the diameters and then a quick smooth with emery and a scotbrite pad and job looks good The originals were brass just heavily tarnished |
07/12/2017 14:29:49 |
How would you go about making 2 matching versions of this finial? I have turned pieces threaded the base so i can hold it in a fixture but how on earth do i turn the small features?...hand held gravers perhaps like woodturning Ian |
