Surprising how heat and condensation occur together, many years ago when I was working in Trucial Oman, now known as United Arab Emirates, at night during the summer the temperature could be 100 degrees Fahrenheit, this was at midnight, our accommodation had metal roofs and the metal caused water to condense out of the air and it used to run off the roofs as though it was raining. The temperature differential between the air and the metal of the roof could have only been a few degrees but enough to cause condensation to occur. XD 351 I like your approach to the problem and your fabrications are impressive. Dave W |
Thread: Cast iron - 160mm dia |

Digressing briefly away from the subject of the thread, I have always wondered if perhaps cast iron would be a suitable material for the crankshafts in small ic engines, I mean those of only small capacities say up to 7 - 10 cc. I feel that it would be much easier to machine than steel but I am curious as to whether it would survive the stresses in the engine? Dave W |

There will no doubt be a chorus of “the police should stop them” but with the current state of police finances and the cutbacks there have been then there are scarce personnel resources available at any time to be able to cover these occurrences. I think the police manage to do a brilliant job with the finite resources that they are allocated, I know that police morale is very low at the present, not sure a 2.5% pay rise after 10 years of austerity will improve it much. My son in law is a police sergeant with nearly 30 years experience and he can’t wait for his 30 years to be up and he can get his pension, counting the days till it happens. It will be interesting to hear the post-mortem on this incident and how much blame will be thrown at the police. Dave W |
Thread: ROY FROM WIGAN NEW MEMBER |

Welcome Roy, in respect of the stand for your lathe I found the specific stands were very flimsy and too low, caused me bad backache so I ditched it and went for the double workstation bench sold by Axminster. I am well pleased with it, no more backache and really useful storage in the drawers and shelves plus as solid as a rock, suggest you look around and see what suits you best. Dave W |
Thread: An electrostatic mystery ... |

I found when on long sea voyages back in the 50’s, if the weather was really rough, Bay of Biscay etc., then a good place to be was up front of the ship and preferably out in the air and this would chase away any tendencies to “visit the side”. Worked for me during a typhoon in the Bay of Bengal. Have only ever been seasick once and that was when I was 8 years old and having boarded in Southampton early evening I woke the following morning entering the Bay of Biscay in a Force 10, it was rough! I am sure that it was due to being below in an enclosed cabin where you have no reference horizon and your balance mechanism is confused and working overtime with no visual reference to rely on. Spent nearly 5 months at sea at various times and only seasick the once and never airsick having flown in many aircraft in all weathers. Dave W |
Thread: Barrier Cream |
16/07/2019 10:18:11 |
Started my engineering career in the Air Force where during training we were bombarded with “ use Rosalez Barrier Cream before any work”. Once out of training used it only once in a while but it is certainly good at preventing problems and cleaning hands after work was easy. Now some 50 years on I have contact dermatitis on my hands but not from oils and greases which you would expect but from domestic chemicals, the worst to cause a flare up is Fairy Liquid, if I get any exposure to it my hands get raw and swollen. There are other chemicals which also cause problems but I now know which to avoid. My advice would be take care with exposure to aggressive and irritant substances and to those using Fairy Liquid for cleaning their hands - Don’t. I now use a barrier cream when appropriate or nitrile rubber gloves, not keen on the gloves because they make my hands sweat so much. Surprisingly I can still work with oils and greases and they don’t cause any problems with my dermatitis, by all means use a barrier cream it can only be beneficial but use a good quality one, if you get sore hands it is an indicator of the need for some kind of barrier. Man made seat covering appears to be the culprit, this was during the 70’s and the fashion was for a lot of clothes to be made out of man made materials so the combination of both probably made the situation worse. I remember going to the other side of the Atlantic in the 70’s and hotels in America were notorious for nylon carpets in hotel rooms and with the air con helping to generate static you could get numerous shocks throughout the day, I seemed to attract quite a few. It might seem that I was affluent being able to travel to America in the 70’s but that wasn’t the case it was all in the line of duty, I travelled with the Air Force, a tough job but someone had to do it. Good point Brian, but was so marked when travelling in my own car but not others, I suspected that it was possibly non conductive tyres, from my work on aircraft I was aware of bonding to dissipate static and aircraft tyres used conductive rubber which helped dissipate static as soon as the wheels touched down. Sorry, Double posted again, I need to get to grips with this posting Dave W |

Years ago I was the proud owner of a mk 2 Cortina, which I found to be very reliable its only downside whilst I owned it was the inevitable rust problem around the macpherson strut mountings, however I digress it had the ability to generate large amounts of static electricity that would discharge through me when I got out and was standing on the ground and grasped the door handle to close the door. These discharges would produce an audible crack as they contacted my fingers, I became very wary of these shocks as they really stung and devised a method of avoiding them, I would use the ignition key held in my fingers to touch the door handle and discharge the static via the metal of the key. This was spectacular when performed in the dark as there would be a hefty blue spark jump from the door handle to the key accompanied by a loud crack. Since the Cortina I have owned many different cars and have received static shocks on only a handful of occasions with different cars so the Cortina definitely had a serious problem with generating static, on the good side I never felt travel sick in the Cortina, just fearful of getting out. Many thanks All for your responses, I am enlightened. The procedure appears to be ignore these calls and whatever you do, don’t try responding because it is going to cost dearly. I wasn’t aware that 0843 numbers were charged at high rate, so much to be aware of these days, why cant we go back a few years to when things were simple, I could cope then. 📵 ▫️ Dave W |

I keep getting calls on my mobile that start with 0843, the phone only rings three times then the call disconnects, never enough time to answer it. I always put the number on my blocked callers list then a few days later the same happens again, always an 0843 number but different every time, again I always add to the blocked calls list and then a few days later the same again. Always different numbers after the 0843 prefix, they must soon run out of numbers hopefully, I can see no purpose to these calls as I never answer them and they just stop ringing after 3 rings, does anyone else get these calls or know what purpose they are serving? Barnaby, glad the message is getting through, no one likes to think or hear of unpleasant issues but I despair of our dog eat dog society that gets more and more divisive. I think the huge costs of the electric vehicle revolution will inevitably have significant social consequences for our society, which must be considered. Dave W |
13/07/2019 18:36:46 |
I am very cynical when I look at the huge changes, social, financial and otherwise that the imposition of all electric vehicles will mean, I look around and see that we as a nation are unable to conquer the poverty and social deprivation that we have already created. Dave W |

Modeng 2000, I tried that once before, took a while for the scars to heal. Seriously I really need to sort my workshop and find proper storage for my tools, it’s getting in dire need of “sorting”. Brian, it happens every time I have a clear out, you have to see my workshop to realise how much I accumulate (hoard), clear outs generate volumes of stuff that I take to the recycling facility. My wife who is disabled loves to garden, the bits that she can manage anyway and has her own shed which is attached to the end of my workshop; she had been complaining that it was very cluttered and needed sorting out so I decided to tackle it this morning. Has made a considerable difference, you can now walk in and virtually hold a dance in there, she is well pleased, I visited the local dump this afternoon and disposed of a fair amount of the contents from her shed, so all going well, unfortunately she found some items in her shed which she deemed belonged in my workshop so they have now been transferred and my workshop which was already overflowing is now even more crowded, the resolution will have to be a radical sort out in the workshop, if the truth be known I am a bit of a hoarder so it is probably well overdue, I can’t put it off much longer I will have to take the bull by the horns. Neil I fear Staffordshire is a bit too far for me to go searching out swarms, I live in East Sussex and at the moment there appears to be a lack of swarms, always the way isn’t it. Dave W |
