Thread: Tap Magic |

Hi Gordon, I use Templers Temaxol for tapping and seems to work well. Also recently have been using Castrol synthetic soluble oil and that gives good results for drilling and some turning jobs. A Google search brings up quite a few suppliers of the Temaxol. Steve |
Thread: Stirling engines |

Hi Ray, I've made a couple of hot air engines (a scale Robinson engine and a stove fan) and along with the usual reducing friction and leaks I've found aligning eveything to be critical. On both my engines with almost zero clearance between the power cylinder and piston and between the displacer rod and bearing, getting everything in line/perpendicular was vital. Could you try undoing the pivots and feeling the side play in the linkages to make sure that nothing is being pressed to one side? Steve Oh and the only other problem that the fan had when it wouldn't run, was my dad was trying to spin it the wrong way! |
Thread: Taper screw |

Might sound a very poor way of doing it but it's worked in the past for me, and comes from something my father read. Turn the taper as per usual then undo the retainng for the cross slide screw, so the cross slide can be pushed backwards and forward by hand. Set up for screw cutting as per normal and use a light spring to apply the force to pull the cutting tool onto job. A long spring is needed if the diameter of the taper changes a lot so as not to put excessive pressure on the larger diameter. When I did it I used an elastic band (!) and got surprisingly good results. Steve |
Thread: Module and DP gears |
17/11/2009 22:14:36 |
I have a Leinen lathe that uses 1.25 module change wheels for screw cutting. I would like to cut some gears that I need but am unable to find anywhere that sells a 1.25 module cutter at a reasonable price (tried Chronos, RDG, Tracy Tools, Arc Euro and generally looking on the internet). I only need a couple of cutters for gears with higher number of teeth, upwards of 55. Couple of questions 1. Anyone know where to get the cutters? 2. Anyone have experience of running 20 DP gears with 1.25 module ones? From my working out on a gear with a PDM of 150mm and 120 teeth that I have, it is 20.3DP, and a 6" gear with 120 teeth would have a module of 1.27 by my reckoning. Since 20DP cutters are fairly cheap I was going to make 20DP gears and go with the slight error as the gear ratios will still be the same, just wondered what other thoughts were? Thanks Steve |
