Thread: ME 4165 Missing? |

Thank you very much Nick. As you say I MAY now have a clue as to when they MAY be back! Of course, having accessed the link, I had to read the rest of the thread. Rather sorry I did really - I am now totally confused as to what to expect from my subscription in the future - I shall have to go through it again when I have more time and try and decode it. No doubt it will all become clear in the fulness of time anyway. Regards Tom W. |

Thanks John Sorry to have taken so long to acknowledge your response, but I did not get the requested email letting me know I had a reply to my message. Perhaps that system was on holiday at the same time? Anyway, 4165 is now accessible, which is great - thank you very much! Now, I wonder where 4158 has gone for its holidays?? Cheers Tom W. Does anyone have any idea why ME 4165 is currently unavailable in the digital archives? Tom W. |

I'm a bit late on this posting. Didn't check for replies until today. Just to say thanks Ian for your efforts. Seems to have done the trick! Cheers, Tom |

In the digital archives of Model Engineer, if I click on issue 4261 I get issue 4270. Anyone know what has happened to 4261?? Tom W. |
Thread: Poor Quality Scanned Images ME |
01/03/2010 00:50:19 |
Very fair comments Keith. I assume, like myself, other subscribers were not aware of the use of pre-existing scans in some cases. Certainly it would be difficult to justify redoing them when there are copies already in existence. Keep up the good work and don't let our moans get you down ![]() Tom |

Posted by Terryd on 28/02/2010 22:56:49: If anyone is scanning magazine articles etc for their own use. Do not scan as 'photograph' or however your software terms it. Scan it as a 'document' (whether colour or black and white). Pictures in magazines are not photographs but halftone images and by defining it as a 'document', the software will try to make some compensation for that fact and will reduce the moire effect which has ruined some of the scans here. Well, I think you have to be careful on that one Terryd. The important thing is that the software use its descreening filter, set to an appropriate dpi value (based on halftone screen pitch). Different software will likely have different interpretations of when that capability should be made available, depending on what they mean by "Document" etc. Currently I mostly use VueScan, which does not even have a setting called "Document". It does, however, have settings for "Magazine" and "Newspaper", both of which will invoke the descreening filter, at preset values assumed typical for each of those two input media. But the best results are likely to be had by measuring the screen pitch on the material you are scanning, and setting the dpi value for the descreening filter manually. Tom |

I'd just like to second (or third?) that. I appreciate very much the material being made available, and the work that goes into preparing it (scanning etc.), but the quality is often a bit less than adequate. I notice that the recent issues that have been uploaded that include the "Minnie" series of articles have each been prepared as a single file, which I think is a first. But the file size has been reduced to about 5 MB, and the quality has suffered in consequence. In particular many of the drawings are at least partly illegible - particularly some of the dimensions. I don't know if this is to encourage people to buy the drawings from My Hobby Store or not, but of course the problem extends to other smaller articles, with drawings that are not available any more, and these articles then become useless. On a different but related issue, I know that a number of people have raised the issue of making the archives available as pdf files rather than as the cute, but inefficient, FlexiPage presentation, and about the illogicallity of using security from pirates as an excuse for not wanting to do this. But one issue which I believe has not been raised before, is the ability of the pdf format to include an OCR layer "underneath" the graphic image presentation of the document. This makes the entire document (archive) much more useful by virtue of its ability to be searched for key words and phrases. It seems to me that many of the magazines that provide digital subscriptions have taken this route, and it adds enormously to the value of the collection. I don't believe that mentioning this will make any difference of itself, since the "powers that be" seem to be pretty firm on this issue, but I think it is useful that we all have a complete picture of the benefits and drawbacks of the different technologies. Thread: Model Engineer 3546 Part 2 is a duplicate of Part 1 |

Hi Joe My recollection is that only the link URL is wrong, since it points to part 1. If you manually change the link url to 3546-2 in your browser, then you will find that it is, indeed, available, and will download successfully. Tom |

Hi Sid The "Back Issues " collection currently starts at MEW 122. So I suspect there's a glitch that's preventing issues 122 on up from appearing in both the "back issues" and the "digital subscription" collections. Presumably temporary? I'm not actually familiar with the way the "Digital Subscription" collection is presented, as I don't subscribe yet. I've been thinking about it, as there's a few issues I don't have in my paper collection that I'd like access to. But the initial production seems to have been so fraught with problems that I wasn't interested in spending my money on a second rate product. I'm keeping my eye on things, but I don't think the service is ready for prime time yet. My own feeling is that each issue should have all pages (ads included) in the proper order (as per the table of contents, which will, of course, be included in the proper place ![]() Tom |

Posted by Sid Herbage on 11/02/2010 03:04: It's there, Tom .... just out of sequence. Look around page 29. Probably other pages are out of sequence too. Thank you Sid. Obviously I didn't look through the issue very far. I think I threw my hands up in disgust at the apparent lack of contents page and moved on to another issue. I did wonder momentarily why the issue appeared to have the correct number of pages - or at least an even number of pages - with one page missing ![]() Tom |

To those who are looking after the digital issues, I believe issue 138 of MEW is missing the table of contents, and I don't think that has been identified previously. My apologies in advance if it has. Tom |

In response to my post above, lest anyone else run into the same problem, the poor printing appears to be associated with the print drivers I'm using on Linux. When I switched to Windoze the printout quality was fine. Of course there is the issue of paper size, since North American usage is letter (8-1/2 x 11) rather than A4. It looks like a good way to get around that issue is to select A4 paper in the printer options (even though you have letter sized paper in the printer - selecting this option forces printing of the full page - if you select letter it will try to accomodate by not printing the bottom 10% of the page), then select a magnification of 90% of normal size. In my case I note that the page numbers and magazine title from the bottom of the page are not printed. This is the case even when I shrink the printout to 85% of normal size, leaving a big margin at the bottom.

Hi Neil Excellent ![]() Tom |

Thanks Jason. I'll give it a try. Quite a few Canadian members on this list too though, so I won't give up hope from this posting. Regards Tom |

I'm looking for a supplier of continuously cast cast-iron in rounds and/or rectangular billets in Canada. I'm in South Western Ontario, so suppliers in that general area would be best, as I could possibly avoid shipping charges, but any Canadian supplier would be of interest. Of course it would have to be a supplier that was willing to sell relatively small quantities on a retail basis. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Tom |
