Thread: Mach 3 Jog with contour shuttle express
30/11/2011 07:53:26

Hi,

Just reading elsewhere about using a contour shuttle express to jog Mach3, is this still the thing to use or is there a later version to use?

Thanks Peter
Thread: Mouse & Keyboard
26/11/2011 20:37:19

Our Siege KX 3 mill seems to be getting more use in a fairly low key sort of way but we are still getting tangled up with the keyboard and mouse.

I was thinking about buying a wireless mouse & keyboard to eliminate the cables but we still need to park them somewhere and of course use them. The mill is on a substantial frame and was thinking of adding some sort of pull out drawer to it but rather than re-invent the wheel just wondered what others have done?

Thread: Car Alternator as Traction motor?
18/11/2011 17:35:51

Billy,
It is the VFD bit that interests me really. Do you have any info about it or what the electric flight motors use. Or is there another forum which covers it?

Just been playing about with a pulse width mod circuit for a solenoid and I think its the first time I have successfully used power mosfets!

I recently read that the stop start technology now extends to motor cycles. I suppose it's the same reason why most commercial vehicles are 24 volt, under the bonnet on the stop/start car I looked at it certainly seems tight with 48volts.

What I was interested in really is about using some readily available technology to drive the alternator and it did cross my mind the that perhaps the person who is giving the talk has written a book on it or is know to this forum or even appears on it?

Had an enjoyable browse through the Model Engineer in the library this morning and was interested to read that a talk will be given by Bob Walker on brushless motors at the ME exhibition.
But what really made my ears prick up is that one of the topics he will be covering will be using a car alternator (16ARC) as a three phase traction motor with a continous rating of 950watts.

Cannot attend the exhibition so wont be able to hear the talk direct and just wondered if anyone has hear of this technique before?

Thread: Siemens Selfwinding Clock/Timeswitch?
13/10/2011 13:33:13

Interesting replies!

I have seen a lot of time clocks of all shapes and sizes over the years but never one with a pendulum!

From the debris inside it looks there was certainly a set of contacts carrying a fair amount of current. The dials inside are for minutes and seconds, was it for a dedicated process?

Stripped the layers of paint off the case and it looks like it was re-painted every time the room it was in was redecorated and originally black. Cleaned the clock and it is running well. It takes the rewind motor almost 24 hrs to fully wind it up and then the motor stalls and "trickle" winds the clock up so it is always fully wound.

I'm very pleased with it up to now!

Hi Ian,

When you got them from the local rubbish dump did you manage to figure out what the date of the time switched and meters was?

Thanks Peter

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for confirming that it is a timeswitch---Do you have any bits that you could take a pic of?

Thanks Peter

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here goes

I have recently bought what appears to be a Siemens timeswitch (it says Siemens on the dial) but with a pendulum! The switching part of the clock has been removed by a previous owner and the clock used purely as a time keeper. It is wound by a disc type ac motor, eddy current?. It is very well made with deadbeat escapement and works nicley after cleaning. The case has been regulary painted where ever it lived and at present it is bright yellow but looks like may it may have started off black..

The coil is marked with 13000w, 3440ohms and with what looks like a date of 13-2-28, or is that too early for 50 hz ac mains?

Searching web I cannot find any trace of it and I wondered if anyone had seen anything like it in industry or where could I find any info about it?

Thanks Peter

Thread: Milling Machine

John,

That all sounds just what need as I realise that one size does not fit all. If you could sort some pics that would be great.

Hi Dave,

Interesting mod looks an improvement, would certainly help in lots of ways.

Difficult to see how John has made his but they look like a bottom box with removable sides? I'm sure he must dig it out sometime!

Been thinking on similar lines as it would help place material and heavy things like the 4th axis.

Thanks for those shots of your machines John, very inspirational.
I have found the angled guard bolted to my otherwise excellent KX3 to be a bit of a pain and had been thinking how to make it more friendly, (and removable?) and wondered if you or anyone else had done this?

Thread: Arc Euro Trade High Speed Spindle Motors
02/07/2011 13:24:11

Following on with this theme of Euro Arc spindles does anyone have any experience of fiitting one of the ER16 (0.75kw, 1hp) spindles to a KX3, or of know of anything to avoid when doing this?

Thread: Gearotic for clock wheels?
01/06/2011 22:02:21

John,

Thanks for the good news all round.

I think that I had read about Gearotic making cutters somewhere else, it all sounds a bit too good to be true really but it would certainly help for the 0.35 wheels I need to cut. As I do not need them immediatly it may be ready in time.

Made single point cutters before by trial and error to match antique wheel with great success and look forward to receiving the 4th Axis

John & Pat

It just looks such a good neat solution I wondered just how feasible it is really. I have a selection of wheel/pinion cutters but somehow you never seem to have the right combination.

I want to make some 0.75m & 0.6m 112t wheels in brass and matching 12t pinions in mild steel. I see that a 0.6 12t pinion is quoted as needing a max mill dia of 0.6842---is that feasible---sounds a very small end mill to me!

Hope to get the 4th axis soon---you may have been working on it John (I hope!)

Pat,

Asked Gear wheel desiger the question about the 0.6m wheel and got the following reply.
"There is no problem making these gears but the software only supports the use of an end mill"

Thanks Peter

Thanks John & Pat for the replies and putting the numbers against the modules.

That Gear Wheel Designer also looks impressive.

Never thought about a slitting saw for the smaller sizes, when you say lot of polishing, is the finish really bad using a slitting saw?

Just dowloaded the very impressive Gearotic and amongst other things I see it will do clock wheels even down to smallish sizes ie 0.6M.

At this sort of module it quotes a min milling cutter size of around 0.75mm

Question is has anyone used Gearotic to produce clock wheels in brass of this sort of module?

Thanks Peter
Thread: Double acting petrol engine
29/03/2011 20:20:22

Hi Nick, Thanks for the confirmation, just looked through my ME collection again and I dont seem to have many V95, will try and get hold of a copy.

Hi,

I am trying to research double acting petrol engines and a friend has told me that ME V95 no 2370, p353 has an article by George Goodman on this subject. I am not sure if this is a full size or model engine. Is anyone able to access this issue and confirm what the article is about?

Thread: Sharpening solid carbide milling cutters?
21/03/2011 08:59:27

Hi,

Is it possible/feasible to re sharpen solid solid carbide milling cutters on a typical T&C grinder like a Clarkson with a diamond wheel or are they to be regarded as throw a way items?

Thanks Peter
