Thread: Sealing a loco smoke box |
04/10/2009 08:49:34 |
Thank you Gents - it is nice to get confirmation of one's assumptions when working in a local support vacuum. However I will carry out this sealing as the last possible moment because I fear that I will have to disassemble the smokebox more than once in future. |

Through the base of the smokebox comes the steam inlet and exhaust pipes which require a slot to be cut in the saddle and smokebox base. Surely this slot needs to be sealed otherwise the draft takes this route rather than over the fire? Also this part of the smokebox will be where ash gathers that would drop through the gap and make a mess of the linkages etc underneath. So how is this normally achieved - I can find no reference on drawings. I have posted a photo of the present state of the smokebox on my William album |
Thread: Quartering loco wheels |
25/09/2009 10:54:54 |
As an apprenticeship served (when this meant 5 years of practice in every trade) mechanical engineer who has worked with ic engines all my life I find the most difficult part of building my first (probably last) locomotive is that I have little advance idea of which are critical and non-critical dimensions. I was advised by an expert not to be too 'tool-roomish' about the work but it is interesting to me that none of the critical items in the valve gear have any means of adjustment - you just have to get it right! Anyway I have solved my problem which was very embarrassingly what Weary suggested - one of the pistons was bottoming because I had not adjusted the piston rod into the cross-head correctly. Perhaps the situation is not so grim as first appeared. Removal of all cylinder gear has allowed me to run the chassis with all wheels coupled and, although not perfect, the wheels don't jam when the chassis is pushed over a plastic tiled floor. So perhaps I have a contact somewhere on the rest of the running gear - I will have to build it back section by section My problem is that I have no idea how free a engine such as mine should turn by hand. (The pistons and stuffing boxes are not too tight) Nor do I know if the effort to turn the wheels by hand is constant - ? |

I am building a 3 1/2" 2-6-2 William and have (obviously) made a minor error in quartering one of the wheel sets in spite of making a jig and taking as much care as I could. The whole system rotates OK by hand but with a jerk at full stroke at either side. Too much clearance in the bosses will cause the whole system to do very strange things! If I ever build another engine it will have only 4 coupled wheels! Do others have these problem? Tony |
Thread: Boiler regulations update |
10/09/2009 16:55:44 |
Martin Is it little wonder that so many model engineers are preferring to purchase their boilers from a commercial company who are experienced in jumping through the legislative hoops? I am about to start building the first loco boiler since helping build one during my apprenticeship 40 years ago. Taking advice from a H&S qualified colleague the requirement seems to be 'traceability' and record keeping even more than the exact material spec - after all most new H&S work is about covering one's backside rather than raising work standards. I think the local inspector wants to see the stays in the firebox before the backhead is soldered in place. Certainly photographs at every stage to add to the audit trail. I intend to keep a detailed construction diary with photos and listing every tool and component with their source, all bound in an impressive folder - of course a successful pressure test will help Tony Martyr |
