Thread: Boxford goes crunch! Now refuses to turn. |

Bob is correct, did you take a look at the pictures he linked? What you have is the sub-table for the milling attachment not the boring table. As Bob said, the table replaces the cross slide as a whole (and should have it's own gib). It is much bigger than the sub-table and has the same size "T" slots as the slotted cross slide. If you had one it would not have a spigot but has a dovetail instead to match the saddle. Mark |

David, what material were you grinding? Mark

Thread: Casting lead |

The milk would be for extra calcium to make stronger bones with all the extra weight from the lead? Actually, it was supposed to help line the stomach to prevent it getting into your system if I remember my training correctly - whether it was "science" or not is any ones guess...... Mark |

"Compo" that is the name I could not remember! You must have spent ages searching to find that Michael..... I still don't know the alloying elements but A knowledgeable scrap dealer might? Mark |

I worked at a company that made steel wire products (rolling, shaping and drawing) and we had a lead bath on the end of one furnace to quench with - it had a fair few tonnes of molten lead in and was open to the atmosphere but the temperature was reasonably low and I tended to stay well away! Living in Yorkshire, the biggest threat to my brain cell was beer.... Mark PS. That was not it Michael |

Thanks Michael, I had not twigged pewter when I typed the post (and I have a couple of tankards made from the stuff). The name I am trying to remember is probably a tradesman "work" name but I still can't remember it! The important part is the increase in value - anyone with tin should keep hold or get a "proper" price as it is semiprecious these days! Mark |

You might find that your gas pipe is not ordinary lead but a special alloy containing tin. I can't remember what the trade name for it is but it is worth a lot more than ordinary roofing or water pipe lead! Mark |
Thread: Con-rod design question |
18/12/2015 19:21:22 |
Martin comes close to mentioning the important terms, I will mention them implicitly: "Slenderness ratio" and it references the radius of gyration to the length (the l/r mentioned above). If there are any crane designers or (probably) structural engineers they would be able to recognise the question and answer it eloquently but I will decline and leave you all to search the term I suggest! Ian, that is a damn good idea! Mark |

I can't remember exactly what the nut looks like but if you measure it up (don't worry about the thread details/internal diameter) and send me a sketch I will draw it up properly and send you a "proper" drawing showing what is needed. Mark |
Thread: Material for pulley shaft, and bearings |

You might try searching for "trailer hub" (internet and ebay). Might be just what you want ready made? Mark |

500K psi is nearly 10 times strength of steel? How is this going to work exactly? Mark |

I just measured the model and the thread is 1 & 3/8 by 16 tpi whit form (55 degree). You might need to fiddle the thread diameter a little depending on the exact form you cut...... Mark |

Mick, I have a detailed model of the spindle etc I made when I converted to taper bearings. You are welcome to the model and the drawing if you contact me with an email address so I can send them. When I say detailed, I was bored and modeled the thread form in detail....... Mark |
Thread: Random Thoughts on Steam Injectors |
17/11/2015 21:02:42 |
I don't know anything about steam (apart from it is hot and hotter still if you constrain it) but I can tell you that domestic plumbing is generally rated to 5 bar if you didn't know already (i know as my cold mains is often up at +8 bar and had to fit a regulator). As for the instant hot water taps, they might be different but I would imagine the tap is on the cold side? Mark |
Thread: What direction should this forum be taking? |
17/11/2015 18:36:35 |
So, that's it then Jason. No matter that it appears the vast majority were happy the way things were, posts will now be edited until they conform to the minority who whine. Mark |
Thread: BIG blowlamp ID |
16/11/2015 20:51:01 |
That's not a blow lamp - it 's the igniter for a Saturn rocket.......that is why it is on it's side Mark Edited By Mark C on 16/11/2015 20:51:45 |
Thread: How do I cut a Verge [Crown] Escape Wheel ? |
16/11/2015 01:20:58 |
just uploading it now!
|

Michael, If you let me know the dimensions of your wheel and the size of the "flags" i will try and sketch it up for you and check the geometry so you will know it will work before you cut anything. Mark |
Thread: Build threads. |

4 Pages of comments and read nearly 4000 times. I sincerely hope it is not locked just because it did not go all your own way given the number of other opinions! Is this not a public forum? If you want control of a transcript, keep it private.... Mark |
