Thread: Digital Issue Vol. 220 No. 4588 is missing front cover |
04/06/2018 05:44:58 |
1) The front cover is not showing up when I click on the image for Vol. 220 No. 4588. All other Vol. 220 and earlier issues retrieve the cover and all following pages. The # 4588 cover is displayed as the thumbnail for the issue, but does not appear when reading it online 2) The thumbnails for all Vol. 220 issues say Vol. 219. This has been ongoing for several weeks. |
Thread: Online copy of ME Vol. 215 No. 4523 is missing a page |
08/12/2015 01:30:41 |
There is a missing page somewhere between pages 849 and 858. One of the pages 850, 851, 852, 853, 854, 855, 856, and 857 is missing. It's not obvious at first glance, since none of the 7 existing pages are numbered. There should be 8 pages between 849 and 858, but there are only 7. The entire online issue is therefore short one page.

Thread: Guidelines for article submissions? |

Thank you JasonB, "Contributor", I did not think to search on that... It would help if I grew up with the Queen's English, instead of the Colonies.

I have looked around the website, and did a few searches looking for something to tell me how to submit an article to MEW or ME. I am looking for something like, "Writers Guide to Submitting Articles to MEW/ME", "Guidelines for Authors", "So You Want to Write an Article". I need answers to the basic questions, like:
I have a couple of article ideas, but don't know how to present them other than just sending a PDF to the editor. |
Thread: Plan 28 - A Serious Proposal to Construct a Working Analytical Engine |
10/11/2010 07:24:01 |
An English chap (John Graham-Cumming) has opened a website, http://plan28.org/, outlining his plans to actually construct a working version of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. Babbage began designing this after he had spent much effort designing his Difference Engine. The Analytical Engine would have been the first true general purpose digital computer, well over a 100 years ago.
The Science Museum in London constructed a working Difference Engine in 1990, using Victorian materials and tolerances, and Babbage's original plans, proving Babbage's design was sound, and that it could have been done successfully in the 19th century.
Now John Graham-Cumming proposes to take the next step, and build a working version of the Analytical Engine, a much more difficult task, since Babbage never finished a complete design, and continued refining version after version of his ideas.
There are some comments pointing out that model engineers could be a valuable part of the effort.

Thread: Box for Rotary Table |
21/05/2010 06:50:15 |
I am not an experienced woodworker.
Can you amplify a bit on the reasons why "NEVER EVER use OAK"? What woods are good for making tool/instrument boxes?
Also, what kind of glues are safe in making boxes that will be holding metal (iron, steel, brass, Al) tools and instruments? That is, glues that do not outgas anything that promotes rust or corrosion,
Thanks muchly.

MEW digital archive issues 94 and 96 still have the "overlay" problem. |
28/02/2010 06:52:08 |
1) Model Engineer archive Issue 4226 is labelled as being part of Volume 192, when it is actually part of Volume 193.
2) Isues 4157, 4158, 4159, 4160, and issues 4274 and 4275 are missing from the ME online archive. Will they be available at some point?
3) Issue 4206 has the image overlay problem (see post above).
4) Issue 4255 will not display. I get the magazine viewer window, but it is all blank.

Model Engineer Vol 191 No. 4206 has some scanning problems. There is the infamous "overlay" problem, in which the text and images appear double struck. This is visible on the cover and the contents page particularly.
Also, the far right edge of all pages is truncated, with about 20% of the right edge columns missing. This applies to text and images both. Page 430 is the first text page to show the problem, but most pages have it to some degree. |

I am unable to open issue Vol. 195 No. 4255; I simply get an error message from Internet Explorer on the magazine viewer page, and an all blank screen where the magazine image should be. |

All issues 4, 6, 8, and 16 printed fine as of now. |

I can confirm that at this time, issue No. 83 still has some legibility problems with the circuit diagrams. |

Addition to the print problem on issue No. 16. If I request printing only pages 1 thru 62, it will print successfully. However, I cannot request printing of any range of pages that includes any pages in the range of 63 thru to the end. |
30/01/2010 23:00:44 |
I cannot print issue No. 16. When I do a print request, it prepares all pages 1 through 61 with no problems, but gets stuck at page 62. I attempted to print pages 63 through 76, but it gets stuck again, never issuing any messages about preparing any pages.
Oddly enough, I can view all pages just fine, but I can't print pages 62 through 76. I have the latest version of Flash, and I have tried emptying out my temporary internet files folder; nothing made any improvement.

Besides impairing or destroying the usefulness of the table of contents of the individual magazines and the cumulative indexes that will undoubtedly be available soon, omitting advert only pages causes other problems!
Adobe Reader has viewing feature in the Page Display menu called "2-Up". This presents 2 facing pages presented side by side, just as if you had the magazine open on a desk in front of you. For instance, pages 18 and 19 in MEW normally face each other, so as you page through the magazine, a title spanning those 2 pages is visible in its entirety when paging thru the magazine. If you have a large enough screen or multiple screens, this is a very nice way to read PDF files, since more info is visible at one go.
An example is found in MEW No. 119, pages 18 & 19. There you will find the article "Drill Grinding With the Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder". In the digital copy, instead of these facing pages presenting the title visually unbroken across two pages, the omission of an odd number of advert pages earlier has caused pages 17 and 18 to face each other, and pages 19 and 20 to face each other. The title is split across the 2-Up display, when it should be a visually integrated title spread across the 2 open pages.
So instead of trying to save space by not scanning advert only pages, please scan the magazines in their entirety. Besides, at some distant time in the future, these adverts will be just as interesting as the articles! |
