Many thanks for the thoughtful comments. Much appreciated. Apologies for any confusion. My interest is in old British bikes – Sunbeam, Enfield, BSA, etc, all with imperial threads sizes for which I have a good selection of sockets. I am looking for a bar/drive with hex head to suit the s/d chuck and a ¼” sq end to accept a socket. Once I have the nut/bolt in place I can go against instructions and finish with a spanner. Jim |

I have just been told the osteoarthritis in my dominant hand has reached the stage where I must avoid, where possible, all twisting and gripping movements to save what is left of the joints. Any and all suggestions and advice in ‘handling’ this situation would be most appreciated, especially to start with, a source of ¼” ‘nut spinners’ suitable for an electric screwdriver as most I can find on the web appear to be junk. Yes being a Buzzing member for many years but certainly not as long as you! My first and only machine needing LPA was a 10 year old Zundapp which I got in the mid 60s. Still, after all that time, I have a continuing interest in these wonderful little machines. What a sad life I live! Jim

From Manx Radio site ![]() MHK wants as much data as possible The politician leading a study on the economic impact of the TT and Festival of Motorcycling wants to hear more from businesses and individuals alike. The first part of the report, which focused on the money government spends on and makes from the two events, has just been released. It revealed a net loss of £950,000. Part two, which should reach Tynwald by January next year, is still being worked on. |

Just reading a review of ‘Exactly How Precision Engineers Created The Modern World’ by Simon Winchester and smiled on reading ‘One striking thing is that ……. virtually all the advances in precision engineering seem to have been made by men, a high proportion of whom appear to have lacked fluent social skills. And it is really not clear that this is because women have been forcibly and unfairly forbidden from taking more of an intertest in things such as screw thread counts. Indeed, almost every advance in engineering and technology covered in this book can be narrowed down even further, to middle-aged men from just four countries: Britain, France, Germany and America.’ Now who decided that engineers lack ‘fluent social skills’? Hi not done it yet. Many thanks for the reply. When I checked several of this set the calculations came out between 25.2 and 25.5 with one at 25.8... I assume the deviations came from my measuring..Have rattled my memory I think (!) the set may have come from a 'shop which got a Boxford T series in the early 1980's. This would, of course, have been metric. Jim |

Many thanks to all who replied, especially Thor for directing me to an earlier posting. Using the number of teeth/diameter formulae the course tooth set is 16DP which, according to the late Sir John is ‘early Colchester’s, round head etc 16 DP splined bore, some 6 some 8.’ The finer tooth wheel I get a 25DP and has 6 splines.I have checked the net without success for possible user. Anyone have thoughts? Jim |

The course tooth set has a spindle hole dia of .875” (22mm ish), a wheel thickness of 1/2” and 8 splines– the set comprises 18, 30,33,35,42 and 45 (perhaps Colchester?) The fine tooth set has a spindle hole dia of .900” (23mm ish) with a wheel thickness of around 9mm - not all are the same - and has 6 splines – the set comprises 40,42,44,45,52,56,60,80 and 96(?)
