Thread: Hand turning a clock fusee |
22/04/2016 09:12:46 |
I have successfully hand turned the fusee profile now. The best cutters I have found to be the hollow pipe and a graver made from 1/4" HSS ground and honed at 45 degrees. I haven,t yet tried the scraper or J Wildins method but I have 2 more to make so will also give those a go. It was a fairly slow job so maybe I was being a bit too impatient. Thanks to all the advice.

I am using a hand rest, and experimenting with different tool shapes/angles etc. i haven't tried the scraper yet but so far the tool which cuts best is the hollow pipe with 30 degree outside angle. I used 5/16" dia silver steel 3/16" hole. Hardened and tempered and sharpened on my tool grinder. I am OK turning brass normally with the lathe slides but not so experienced with hand turning.

Thanks. I am going to try the JW method and have tried the round nose tool method without too much success. I have seen an old ME article on using a hollow round cutter either ground with an external angular edge or an internal angular edge? What speed is recommended ?

I am trying to hand turn a clock fusee for an English dial clock I am making. I have turned it cone shaped and now want to shape it. I have the original I am copying so I know the shape required.l want to know what shape of graver I need to make and at what height and angle to cut. I have experimented and find I keep getting "dig ins". Any advice would be appreciated. Regards David.

Thread: Schaublin 102VM Lathe Tailstock |
21/08/2011 19:36:42 |
Thanks to all for these suggestions.
I will have a look at MEW 148.
I think my made barrel would be good enought to use even though the rear slotted end "pulled in" by 0.003".
When I get the time I want to have a go at replicating the Schaublin leadscrew for it as I believe they are no longer available (unless somebody has a second hand one available in good condition). If I can make one, I can then quickly interchange the barrel with the 2 degree taper original when required.

Thread: Pinion Milling Attachment MEW 164 |
23/10/2010 21:04:49 |
Has anyone experience of making this attachment?
I had extreme difficulty in trying to flatten the mild steel bed, so much so that I gave up.I tried the shaping machine, flycutting on the milling machine as the article suggested and bolted to the faceplate on the lathe.
I am now using ground gauge plate as is, hoping that it will be accurate enough.
Any helpful ideas would be welcome.
Regards
David

Thread: 1" Belt and Disc Sander |
10/12/2009 20:49:40 |
Like the article on using a similar machine as the poor mans linisher, I bought this machine basically for use in clockmaking and sharpening lathe tools etc.
I have been testing it, and on using the belt a great amount of chatter/vibration occurs when applying pressure to the belt with the work ,against its backing plate. I am not sure whether this is caused by the joint in the belt.
Does anybody have experience of using a similar tool and if so can they tell me the reason and hopefully acure for this problem |
Thread: Clockmakers Depthing Tool |
03/12/2009 19:34:14 |
I have a set of castings from Reeves I want to machine.
Can anybody who has machined a set of these castings tell me the Model Engineer editions that covered the making of the depthing tool?
I have a copy of Model Engineer 19 October 1973 but my article is incomplete on page 1016.
I also have the Post Bag article of 17 January 1986 which mentions the dangers of boring the holes for the runners on the early castings (my castings are from 1980), can anybody comment on how they machined these holes?

Thread: Schaublin 102VM Lathe Tailstock |
12/10/2009 12:03:59 |
I have the 2 degree taper tailstock and would like to make/have made a replacement barrel with 2 Morse taper.
The original barrel is too hard to reform the taper to 2 Morse.
I have attempted to make a barrel with 1 Morse taper which to a degree is successful, but after machining the slot in the rear of the barrel released stresses led to the rear diameter of the barrel being 3 thou smaller.
Would it make any differece if the slot was machined before boring out the rear end?
Has anybody experience of manufacturing a lathe tailstock barrel or could point me in the direction of applicable articles?

Does anybody have a copy of operating manual (if there ever was one).
Also can anybody tell me what grade of lubricating oil to use in the spindle bearings?
