Thread: Kiln - should I buy it? |
04/11/2012 07:51:05 |
Hi John, bearing in mind the comments above then it could be too good an oportunity to miss if the price is right. If it dosnt meet all of the criteria then Mike said it all in the last post. instead of getting a contoller sell it to a potter etc and then put the profit towards what you realy do want. Even if it is a top loader is there any reason why it could not be put on its side to make it safer for hot use.? Regards Clive |
Thread: Vibratory tumbler media |
24/09/2012 18:27:46 |
I would use the granite and sieve it to a suitable size. It will work best if there is an even grain size . Say 4mm - 6mm. Most of the pyramid madia are ceramic or silica based and that is the main constituent of most granites.
Make sure you take out ny soft rocks as they will quickly form a sludge that dampens the general tumbling action. The other thing tou could do is look at lapidary ~( rock polishing ) suppliers and buy carbide grit. Fleabay?

Thread: Mini lathe improvements |
04/06/2012 09:32:50 |
I,ve just had a nice cup of tea in the sunshine this morning and flipped through page by page 155 to current and it is not in there. Tonight i will work back from 154 rechecking each page. Thanks for your help Norman. I will check again before I start just in case you are lucky for me.

Thanks Norman, I know the one you meen and it uses 6900ZZ unfortunately that is not what i am looking for. The one I am after is the thrust bearings that go on the end of the lead screw at the same time as adding the extension shaft and hand wheel.

Hello guys I need some help quickly please as my wife is visiting ARC on Wednesady to get some spares and I want to be a comprehensive as possible. I followed the series on the mini lathe in mags 130 to 154 + and have the worshop series number 43 book. I have done most of the mods and have a good little machine. I have not yet done the handwhell / lead screw mod, that is next. I have the article that uses the M12 half nuts but I am sure there was a small " additional " 1/4 page alticle towards the end of the series that used flat thrust bearings to get rid of all the end float. I have skimmed through my mags and can not find it. Nor in any of the indexes I came across. I know its a long shot but does anyone know which one it is in ? or have i just been dreaming it.

I have one of these and yes it is a good machine. Dont worry about crowning the belt as it is built into the pully. I did get spares and I know they were easy to get at the time ( 4 years ago ) but I can not remember who from sorry. Burgess, Axminster, Machine Mart, Charnwood all spring to mind. Most likely is machine mart as Chris has said.

Thread: Mini Mill belt drive conversion |
01/04/2012 21:04:43 |
I have converted mine and yes the belts are very difficult to find. A friend on another forum got mine for me from a place in Hull. Unfortunately that is of no use as I can not remeber who. I'll have a bit of a dig around in my records and If I can think of anything I will post again. It is very worth doing so good luck.

Thread: Painting blue styrofoam |
20/01/2012 18:15:53 |
I use this stuff in model aircraft and would never dream of painting straight onto it.
there are so many micro cavities to fill the weight penalty is horendous.
I use brown parcel paper slap a coat of diluted PVA onto the paper.
Sponge a THIN coat onto the surface of the foam then bring the two together.
Leave a couple of days then paint as normal.
If you are doing this for a casting then you dont even need to paint it .

Thread: Warco WM-180 or MIni Lathe |
30/12/2011 18:39:00 |
there is no difference size / capacity wise between the two.
but from my recollection of looking at these previously I think the 180 has a slightly more powerful motor and is a little more robust.
I have a mini and I get quite good results with it but it did benefit from most of the improvements that are in the MEW series and now the workshop book series.
I am pleased with it overall but do wish it had a bit more torque at low RPM.

Thread: Small Cutter Grinder |
27/12/2011 09:12:18 |
i agree with Dias look at the @ Harold Hall books.
This is a good medium size project and I found I learnt a lot doing it and it is very versatile .
It has the advantage of being small and not a mamoth project like a quorn.
I have lathe , Mill etc and It can do more then I am capable of.
If you make the grinder hight adjustable, there was an article in MEW, this would make it a very capable device indeed.
Add a diamond wheel and your set for life.
I can supply more detaqil if needed.

Thread: How do I read this gauge |
23/11/2011 19:57:04 |
If it is just a saw tooth pitch gauge then I don't know either.

|
23/11/2011 19:55:36 |
With out seeing an image of the gauge it is difficult to be sure.
But if it is circular , like a die, then I would suspect it relates to the class of fit or accuracy of the thread. if it is that type it is way more accurate than you are likely to need in our field of work.

Thread: unc / unf to metric |
16/10/2011 19:17:39 |
Thanks guys the thread tables are neater than the ones i had found and have been printed off to go in the garage.
Unless i have them in my current collection which i doubt then it will be metric as i will only need to source a 1.6 mm. Tracy ?
I do have BA but i think they only go down to a 10.

I have just bought the set of bottle engine castings from Forrest Classics.
I knew it was from the USA but it never even crossed my mind about the threads.
All the screws etc are supplied but I do not think i have the taps to match.
Not checked my stock yet as I can not get in the gargage.
So 5-40 3-48 2-56 1-72 uk source of taps at a reasonable prince of convert to metric

Thread: X1 Mini mill belt conversion in the UK???? |
05/05/2011 20:37:43 |
I spent ages looking for one and failed. I used the web and severakl other forums.
In the end through this forum I obtained drawings and made it up my self.
It is not that difficult. The drawings should be treated as general arrangement and it requires a bit of double checking to make sure it will match and fit your machine body.
I still have them as PDF's and can forward them if you give me your e mail by PM ( my messages)

Thread: My drill bits are not cutting |
03/05/2011 20:55:43 |
I may be because they are cheap but most likely is you are not getting the cutting angle right.
May I suggest if you are hand grinding only that you do the following.
Get a largeish 10mm + new drill and line it up with the staionary wheel so that the cutting edge is across the face of the wheel. Mark that angle on your rest with a marker or something.
Take your blunt drill start the whhel and offer the drill up at the desired angle and with the drill cutting edge hoizontal.
touch the drill lightly to the wheel and imediately start rotating it clockwise. As you rotate slow down slightly untill you have done the full face. cool the drill in water and repeat with the other face.
The idea of slowing down as you rotate is that slight extra time is allowing it to grind more and give you the secondary clearance.
Not a perfect way of doing it and probbably not the best explanation but they should cut a bit better than your current attempt.

Thread: Which Mini Mill to Purchase?? |
03/05/2011 20:46:23 |
In all honesty at that end of the market they are basically different colour painted clones.
That is the ned of the market I am at and I am happy with my Warco Mini mill.
But hindsight is a wonderfull thing and if I were starting from scratch I would have the most rigid one I can find even at the expense of some of the other bells and whistles.
Warco Mini mills et al have plastic , delrin , gear dives they are fairly noisy and you WILL smash them at some point. This means taking the head off the mast and stripping it right down. You can get replacements and also aftermarket metal gears from ARC.
But they are still gears they will still be noisy and I did not want to transfer the damage from the gears to some other part of the mill.
I made the belt drive conversion, there are a couple of threads on here about it.
Much quieter, smoother and a better speed range. Well worth doing.
Hope that helps.

Thread: brass wire mesh in 1mm weave |
27/04/2011 20:44:28 |
Clive,
how much are you looking for ? At work we have some that is about 30 threads per inch.
We used to uase it for clay seiving before we "perfected" other methods of cleaning the clay.
It is about 2' wide and I could probably aquire 1- 2 ' for you.
Alternatively when I used to work in an automotive paint shop we used a synthetic material
"nytal seiving " to repair the powder coat vibro seive. This was available in a great many weaves and thicknesses.
Google that and i found the following
