Thread: Boilers
23/04/2021 16:55:23

Gentlemen,

just picked up this thread after another session in my garage/workshop, thank you for your time, from what I read my piece of copper tube is adequate for the job.

The boiler design in the book has a 1/4" stay passing through both ends and the end plates are 2mm thick, it doesnt give the gauge of the tube though.

Gentlemen,

Thank you, I got the pressure from a book called Ellie the steam tram which uses an oscillating engine and the safety valve is set to blow at 75 psi so I used that as my starting point, I know mamod stuff runs on approx 30 psi.

Good afternoon gentlemen,

I'm currently having a culling session in my garage and have come across a simple steam oscillating engine as a kit of parts and also a piece of copper tube roughly 50 mm dia and i'm wondering if somebody can tell me if there is a minimum thickness for the tube thickness for making a simple boiler to produce 75 psi max.

Thank you,

Thread: Electric Smart Meters
02/04/2021 07:46:48

Clive,

I'm with British Gas, my display crashed so rang them up, I was advised to turn it off for 24hrs, after 24 hrs we turned it back on and it was working correctly and that was before Christmas and has behaved since, it made me wonder if the meters were getting an upgrade.

Thread: Annoying phone calls

Agree with BT Gaurdian, had the system for years and never had an unwanted call, occasionally the phone will display the fact that a call was blocked which is easily deleted.

AS a type 2 Diabetic who injects insulin my licence is restricted to three years, I received my paperwork before Christmas as the licence ran out this March, I left it until January to go onto the Website to renew it but after a while trying to give answers that I couldnt give I gave up and filled in the paperwork and posted it, within a week I had my new licence.

Thread: Welding and Pacemakers
10/03/2021 21:34:44

Howard,

Thank you, we always called them that to the point I forgot their correct names. Years ago there used to be a rumour going around that the large transmitting aerials at Daventry were causing cars fitted with the new electronic ignitions to breakdown.

Whhen I served my apprenticeship 50 years ago the company I worked for had three production lines and all had Wild Barfield Induction Heating machines and in the control cabinets they all had Witches Caldrons, there was a 20 foot exclusion zone around each machine for anybody with pacemakers fitted.

One other thought, drill a large hole into the centre of the shaft allowing the shaft to give a little and once the pulley is free tap a thread into the hole to replace the space with a plug.

Are you able to apply pressure from the rear with a pair of wedges and a G clamp as well as the puller.

Bill, your saw has two bearing guides either side of the blade, is there a third one sitting on top of the blade to stop the blade riding up.

Martin P

AS already said, check the weld and look for teeth missing, can you open the blade guides slightly because the weld might be slightly thicker when going between them.

Do you also have a guide pushing down the blade, the weld may not be flat along the edge catching the guide there also.

Thread: Bearing puller
28/02/2021 21:20:26

I have a three bearing puller which can also be used as an internal puller, I also have a two legged puller, whether you use a three or two legged puller is down to whether either will fit. Machine Mart sell a flat plated puller with various legs, part no 040810698, I have one and it works well.

Thread: Digital Callipers - again
24/02/2021 20:35:36

I would recommend a ‘left hander’ as it makes checking on the lathe sooo much easier.🙂

I'm left handed and use my calipers upside down, the left handed once I've seen are expensive particulary when I can buy resonable quality ones for £20.00.
