BobH, Sorry badly written, what I meant was we don't have motorised valves so the boiler heats the radiators and emersion tank via the same circuit and the only way we can turn off the radiators off is via the thermostat valves on them. Martin P |

We ran it with no thermostat for a long time, unusual at the time and just used the radiator valves. Pump life suffers though so eventually I fitted a thermostat. John W1, Re your above comment, we have lived in the current, and last house, for 28 years and when we moved in the only temp control was the radiator thermostats and still is, the boiler shuts down when its own thermostat turns it off but the pump runs all the time and doesnt turn off and has been running for at least 20 plus years, we dont have seperate hot water and radiator circuits either and during the summer months just shut the radiator valves. It doesnt come any simpler and apart from replacing the old radiator thermostats it works well and our bills I consider to be good infact we are always in credit with the bills.

My brother looked into ground heat pumps, when the company he picked came to see him to quote they told him his 200 foot x 60 foot garden wasnt big enough to justify the outlay, he settled for water and electric solar panels on his roof which are working well. Martin P

Having watched the Victor at Bruntingthorpe many times I cant see how it could "just lift off" as it leapt quite a distance off the ground, makes me wonder if they gave the stick a tug to much.

I think an off topic would be a very good Idea, and breaking down the topics would be useful as there is some stuff I dont read but have to look through to pull out other idea's. I must buy a Dictionary to find out what proslytism is as my grasp of the English language was never my strong point at school. Martin P |

I'm of the opinion that companies like mine are covering their posteriors by putting us on courses, which we have to sign to say we attended, so that should one of us have an accident they can say we were trained. Five months ago I returned to work after eight months on the sick with a condition called charcot foot, before I was allowed back to work my consultant had to fill in a ten page questionnaire asking what I could or could not do not to make my working day easier but to make sure they were covered in the event of me having re occurring problems, which I must add is likely.

I and my fellow service engineers have to do manual handling courses regularly, we approach the box, kick it to determine the weight, step up to the box with feet slightly apart, bend the knees and go down to pick up the box, the problem I have is that as a man who is in his sixties getting back up is bad enough but with a box of paper is becoming almost impossible

Frank, I have an apprentice at the moment and on Thursday last week he asked me to take a picture of him cutting a hole in a piece of Perspex, later on he looked at the picture and said I cant put that into my work book. He was not wearing, goggles, gloves, glasses and hi Vis, he was being supervised by me and I had carried out a mental risk assessment so could see no problem. Martin P

Robbo, Its been in a shed with a few other engines for a few years.
Its a Ruston 6 cylinder and a nice runner until it popped the end off one of its injectors the other weekend, the second engine is a Petter VJ1 also a runner.

Rod, I've just watched your excellent video, I'm very fortunate in that as a volunteer I get to help run and look after the engines in the museum, I'm also one of the Goffers for the museum so fetch anything in the area which is donated or purchased for the museum, when I go I usually spend several days there as its a 530 mile round trip for me. Its always good to put a face to a name, I seem to pop up every where Martin P |

The Exhibition is only an hour and a quarter from my home so picked my mate up at 08:15 and arrived at 09:30 and joined the queue for the 10:00 opening, we spent three and a half hours wondering around looking at all of the exhibits and chatting to friends and came away with a mag based lamp off the Chester stand for my mill and lathe. A good day out. Martin P |

Gentlemen, I spent Friday to Monday at Internal Fire Museum in Tan y Groes West Wales a museum full of very large internal combustion engines and thought you might like to see some pictures. If you go to this link https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipNMaBcE4DAE0I9U6B3Qt_0PoR5wp2MC3zoQyAN5

Thread: Climb Milling |
08/10/2015 09:54:40 |
Gentlemen,
I've enjoyed reading this thread as it contradicts what I was taught as an apprentice, we were taught that we should "never" climb mill as it was considered an unsafe way to mill and we could be in trouble if we were caught doing it, so forty years on I dont do it. Martin P

Jason, Apologies I got you muddled with V8

Jason,
Having looked at the Vulcan website this morning I would say you are both correct, Shuttleworth and Gaydon this weekend are the last Public displays, next weekend is just a tour of the country with no actual public displays.

Sadly I will miss the Vulcan, I'm local to Shuttleworth, because I'm displaying an engine at Twyford Waterworks tomorrow at the end of season rally, Twyford is worth a visit particularly to see the large triple expansion engine, currently the boiler, an original, is being referbished and overhauled. This afternoon what I think was MH434 a Spitfire mk9, originally owned by Ray Hanna a Red Arrow leader in his day, flew low and slow over the house and then later a Chipmunk and a Tiger Moth in close formation flew around for ten minutes. The airliners have also been busy, what with Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and Birmingham all within fifty miles of me.

Thread: Peristaltic Pumps |
29/09/2015 21:34:37 |
I change peristaltic tubes on a regular basis as they are used in dosing pumps which run 24/7, plain silicon tube doesnt last long as it can stick together inside and it splits. PM me and I maybe able to find you what you need from a slightly different material.
