Have a look at this design for a saw table for these band saw that folds out of the way when using the bandsaw horizontally. Les. Thanks for that, I found some more aluminium yesterday in one of my sheds so may follow the design. Martin P |

I decided to upgrade my horizontal band saw, I've had it for about ten years after being given it by a neighbour, it was in a bad state as it had stood outside for several years so I stripped it and got it back to order, it didnt have a length stop or a table for vertical use. The table is just a piece of scrap 6mm plate and the length stop is made from scrap, the stop is made from a piece of bar and some Aluminium strip, I didnt have any small screws to join the two parts together so I used Gorilla glue and left them clamped together for 24hrs, yesterday I held the stop in the lathe to drill a 12mm hole through the plate, I spun the lathe up to check for vibration and to test the glue and once happy I drilled the hole, very impressed with the glue. On the long shaft that supports the stop I marked 50mm steps up to 250mm, I dropped the blade down and measured 50mm from the blade and made a shallow hacksaw mark and so on to 250mm then highlighted the marks with permanent pen, this will allow me to cut lengths without use of the tape measure. My parents bought me one nearly 50 years ago, it sits in my wardrobe, memory tells me it has to much water in it and when filling there is a screw in the end of the boiler to be removed so that when you fill the boiler via the safety valve the water will flow out off the end of the boiler from the screw hole, when it stops flowing its at the correct level. Now I must get mine out and running Martin P |

I've always found that cyanoacrylate [super glue] works best for shoe repairs where the rubber sole has come away from the leather . I mend all the family;s shoes this way and they stay stuck. You have to hold the join together until the glue sets. +1 for this, because of a condition in my feet I have to have shoes that support the whole foot, the inner parts of the shoes are made from a mould of my feet. The shoes have flat soles and after 6 months constant use, I virtually live in them, the soles come unstuck at the heel and toe, I've tried Evostick, which works short term but I find super glue lasts indefinitely, I do clamp the shoe at the repair and leave for a while. Well today, after receiving some new tools yesterday, I took my first clock mechanism apart, a 1920's cottage clock, I have now given all of the parts a good clean and inspection and I am pleased that the wear I've seen is not bad considering the age of the clock, hopefully tomorrow I will put it all back together and sort out the couple of issues I had already found. I can't understand people who think they are above everybody else and do as they wish, they are no more immune than the rest of us, you could almost hope they will be infected but I doubt they would be any different, ignorant Bar Stewards. Martin P Edited By martin perman on 08/04/2020 22:06:20 |

I ordered some clock repairing tools from Alfindings Ltd via Amazon, they arrived two days after ordering and also ordered some clock repairing tools from R & N Electronics, website www.rnhorological.co.uk, currently in transit. I also bought a clock off of Ebay, delivered last week with driver observing SD and had another Courier arrive to collect a cast iron Exhaust Pot for a Stationary engine SD observed also. Thread: Will cash become obsolete ? |
07/04/2020 08:59:33 |
As part of my part time job delivering medication I have to bank the Chemists previous weeks takings and seeing how much there is every week I can say that there is an increase in the use of cash and I also collect change from the bank and that has increased as well. There was a young man in the bank spouting miss information about the use of cash and the staff were very quick to dispel to other customers that what was being said was not correct. Martin P |

I recently bought an old mantel clock made by the New Haven Clock co America, I paid £23.50p as a spares or repair clock off Ebay, it arrived yesterday well packaged and when I opened it I soon had the mechanism out for a look see. It didnt have a key so first job today was to make one, I took a piece of 6 mm dia aluminium bar, I then measured the spindle across the flats and drilled a whole in the end of the aluminium and with a riffler file I then squared the hole to fit the spindle, I wound the springs up, one for the clock, the other for the hourly chime and then held one of the plates in the vice. The mechanism needs a very good clean but after looking in one of the clock bibles I bought I tweeked the pendulum and its now ticking away nicely in the garage. It has faults, one is the clock doesnt trip the chime mechanism and the other apart for the clean is to tidy the case. I have to make some tools two devices to stop the springs un coiling and four legs to support the frame(s) to support the mechanism while I strip and assemble it. A good friend of mine did his Apprenticeship at WH Allens in Bedford and was there when it closed, he said there were loads of models in glass display cabinets that after the closure was announced disapeared over night, the museum Internal fire has several large multi cylinder engines in working order and as a Gofer I have taken a couple of van loads of literature to the museum from around Bedford. My friend told me of a three cylinder that arrived from the Middle East for repair, when the eingine was de crated the middle cronrod had failed and almost cut the engine in half. Martin P |

Stood in line for my prescriptions with many other people all spaced at the correct distance. It took 45 min with 20 min of that taken up by a 30+ YO who was asking how to manage his. He left red-faced when told the dispensing date is on his Med's and all he had to do is count and that his prescription had been ready to collect 6 days ago! Makes you wonder. Nathan. I work part time delivering medication for a local chemist, I share the job with another gentleman and split the week between us doing approx 20 hrs a fortnight in the afternoons, it amazes me how difficult customers are and out the back of the shop are boxes and boxes of medication which has not been collected by customers, this can be reused by the chemist but they are so busy with current prescriptions they havent the time to restock, the delivery side has increased but its annoying when i deliver meds to people who answer the door are only yards frm the shop and fitter than me, I love the job though as a lot of my customers only see me and nobody else.
