Thread: Motor pulley
25/11/2016 10:31:43

Sorry Sean just realised your real problem, it is a two step pulley rather than a two groove pulley, still might be worth a try though.

Hi Sean, if you are stuck try one of the engineers stockist such as Eriks. Modern industrial pulleys are usually 'taperlock' type which has a separate bush with a variety of bore sizes for each pulley size, easy to fit as well.

Thread: Bridgwater carnival
22/11/2016 21:07:00

Hi guys, not model engineering but for feats of engineering and creativity have a look at Bridgwater carnival youtube videos.

For those who have never heard of it it is an illuminated guy fawkes carnival every year. All volunteers that build these things and they are different every year.

Just browsing the Chronos tools website and was amazed at the huge collection of books they do.

Many of you may already know this but although I use Chronos from time to time I did not realise what a superb library they have.

Thread: Noisy WM250V Lathe
15/11/2016 19:37:33

Bruno just noticed the video you posted, to me it sounds very much like the fan blades catching its surrounding duct/casing.

Bill

15/11/2016 19:29:33

Hi Bruno, I have the 290V lathe which has the same issue.

As an engineering manager for an industrial fan manufacturer I know full well how noisy fans can be (up to 400kw motors)

The fan noise is from a separate cooling fan for the motor so it continues running even when the lathe is stationary.

I put a piece of Rockwool insulation between the motor and the wall it is against (being careful not to block any airflow) this helped reduce reflected noise albeit not dramatically.

It is still annoyingly noisy but I suppose I have got used to it, if I could be bothered I guess I could find a quieter fan or look at boxing it in, again making sure the airflow into the fan is not restricted.

As I say in my case I am against a wall, so not easily accesible without shifting hte lathe, maybe one day.

In my world this is a tiny fan so should really not be that noisy but it is probably a cheap very inefficient type.

Any subscribers experiencing delay in receipt of latest issue?

Was due on sale by 28 Oct and I usually have it a couple of days before that.

Thread: Midlands MEX 2016
17/10/2016 20:19:55

My first Midlands show which I thought was excellent. Nice weather helped as we (Me + wife) sat out in the sunshine to enjoy a cuppa and watch the traction engines.

Noticed a post about the Brooklands show, heard somebody else saying it was not too good, what was the problem?

When I first heard about the venue I thought a match made in heaven, a model engineerring show at a wonderful location with fantastic history in engineering.

We were on holiday so could not go which we might have done otherwise.

Thread: silver soldering-not getting burnt
12/10/2016 15:29:01

Michael, I am using the Sievert 2943 43kw burner, I did not have much success with my 2941 7kw on earlier attempts at silver soldering, expert advice on this forum convinced me that the problem was not heating up quickly enough. Certainly made a substantial difference to annealing times for the plates.

Soldering with HT5 flux and 438 rods on this bit of the boiler.

Boiler placed in my 'forge'. an old BBQ and aerated building blocks.

Sorry my text went a bit awry

12/10/2016 15:14:55

This is video in question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPTzix5SYAI.

Some of you might know these asbestos men.

Question how many men does it take to solder a model boiler.

What do you guys wear when silver soldering, just watched a youtube video of a couple of guys soldering a boiler and wore no gloves or overalls, I wore both on my first attempt at my Emma Voctoria boiler and was getting extremely uncomfortable towards the end of doing the throatplate, both hands and body.

I had do pull my hand away very quickly in the last bit and messed it up a bit.

Gloves were builders leather type so have now got some welders gloves, not tried them yet but I fear they might be rather cumbersome.

Is it me just being a wimp, I have always thought I had quite a high threshold of pain.

Thinking about it now I think it was the hand holding the solder rod (which of course is getting shorther all the time) rather than the burner hand.

Any tips ?

Thread: Chinese horizontal bandsaws
12/10/2016 13:26:11

I bpught a Clarke one from Machine Mart a couple of years ago, the horizontal/vertical type.

As usual with the normal proviso that you get what you pay for, I have found it to be so useful.

I have to say that the vast majority of my usage has been with it in the vertical position, cutting pieces of plate to rough shape, saved so many hours.

Ironically I think the very first time I used it was in the horizontal position cutting a large(ish) diameter bar, not very square cut but I subsequently adjusted it so that it did not involve too much wasteage machining it square.

Cheap and cheereful maybe but worthwhile.

Thread: Catering at shows
27/09/2016 19:05:10

Nice to hear from you Paul, I have long since found it extremely frustrating that everywhere you go you can get vegetarian meals which as you say is a lifestyle choice but not GF which is not a choice (apart from the recent GF fad, which will fade away as people start to add up their grocery bills, GF is about 3 to 4 times price)

Still counting my blessings it is much better than when I was first diagnosed 25 years ago.

Tea rooms, restaurants etc seem more geared up than these event caterers, don't know why, it is not rocket science.

As usuall I will be taking sandwiches and probably splash out on a cuppa.

Whenver we order on line we are always pleased to see DPD as the carrier, superb service, trouble is you don't have much control over what carrier the vendor uses.

Thread: Catering at shows
26/09/2016 19:27:56

As a Coeliac (gluten intolerence) I have found catering at shows particularly disappointing, as a result I bring my own sandwiches.

It would be nice to sit down to a hot meal of some sort.

Coeliac disease affects at least 1% of the population, probably greater at the typical age range of our hobby so I guess there are many model engineers out there who have the same problem.

Would be interested to hear from any fellow sufferers and their experience of exhibitions, especially the forthcoming Midlands one.

Thread: What would you ban and why? (Definitely tearoom!)
21/08/2016 21:13:22

I am fully aware that many of the energy forms I quoted are not 'green' but the point I was making was that there is widespread 'support' of green energy (and we all need energy) but there appears to be equal oppostion to any form of energy production.

What is green energy anyway, many people don't look at the overall energy cost.

As I said with my follow up post it is mainly me being an old grump.

I was saying to my son the other day I wish I had some of the mentality I had when I was a teenager, the bit that enables you to sail through life without being irritated by:- loud music, garden fires, barking dogs, people who can't drive, 'sophisticated' people who are extremely stupid...........

Bill D.

21/08/2016 14:23:43

And yes I suppose that qualifies me as a grumpy old man.

Bill D

21/08/2016 14:21:07

I would ban all the PC brigade who take offence on behalf of others, who want to make us all the same, no male or female, no Mr/Mrs/Miss, no schools other than one lowest denominator one, who wring their hands for the homeless but object to housing developments, who would ban anything that posed the slightest risk of any description, and especially those that want green energy but at the same time don't want energy from wind, tide, solar, waste, gas, oil, coal, fracking, nuclear and any other innovative way of producing energy.
