Thread: Any info on this? |

I wonder if it is a wire tentioner for supporting chain link fencing.I have used one many years ago and it has some similarity ,but that one had a lever instead of handle. Frank |

HI Jason,That is exactley what I have and after your advice I will proceed.Thanks. Frank |

Hi David I am sorry but I can't upload into my album from my photographs .It's not that I have not in the past but I had three quick power cuts in 15 minutes a while back and as my computer was carrying iphoto which no longer exists, when we manages to get the router back to normal the computer had put the present photo package on which I am having difficulty in working. Having compleated the main machining on the cylinder head of the Brian Rupnow Rockerthump engine I was about to start the vave cages and noticed that they would protude into the combustion chamber.I found that the two step bore was to deep by 0.092" as I had read the drawing wrong and made the second bore the total depth of 0.196". I have made a washer 0.092 and propose to glue into place with J-B weld and drill and tap with a BA countersunk screw will this work as I have made a decent job of the cylinder head so far. Frank |
Thread: MIlling cutter pulling out of collet |
09/05/2021 19:36:21 |
I have had cutters walk out of an ER 32 collet chuck. When I have to cut to a positive depth I use a Posiloc chuck and sometimes a Claire chuck and neither give any trouble.I still use Er collets for most work. Frank |

As Emgee suggests ,it could be a leaking waste. Behind the panel cut out a section of floor between joists and use a mirror and torch to trace the pipe and check for runs on the plaster board. Frank |
Thread: Spindle thread wont engage ml10... |
11/04/2021 11:08:06 |
I bought an ML10 in 1976 from Myford and used it with a three jaw chuck and in 79 I bought a 4 jaw from Myford that would not go on.They were most helpful and sent a gentleman who came and used a thread chaser to ease the spindle thread with a good result. The journey from Myford to us must be 35miles,I wonder if the new Myford would be so helpful. Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021 |
07/04/2021 16:40:19 |
I finished the cylinder on the rockerthump engine of Brian Rupnows design, and have started on the piston which I have left to cool down before the final cuts.It took all morning to strip the cross slide and top slide and give the lathe a scrub down after turning the cast cylinder. Frank |
Thread: image size of photographs for albums |
14/03/2021 12:53:43 |
I used to have i photo on my mac and I could transfer photo's to my album. We had a series of 3 power cuts in 15 minutes which caused us problems getting our computers running. We had to turn off the router and restart it after 20 minutes and we were back running, but i photo had been upgraded to the latest version which I am still trying to get my hesd round. My question is how many mb can my photo's be to transfer to my album they are 46mb and 43mb at the moment. I got the city wrong,it was Bingley Hall Birmingham that I saw the merlin engine. Frank |
Thread: Building a small bench |
23/02/2021 21:57:05 |
I built my bench from 8'*3' pine with 4" legs with cross members to take an 8'sheetof 3/4"ply 2' 6" wide which I have now reduced to 6'.This bench is a mistake as one stores everything on top and one still works in a small space.I like the ply top as the tea does not get cold to soon and screwing items to the top is a bonus, and nicks in the edge are convenient for holding small items for filing.I have had this bench for 40 years and built it from spare materials off site when I was a site foreman. Thread: RR Merlin Scale Models |

I saw a merlin engine model at a hall in Leicester that has burnt down I think. This would be around 40 years ago.It was run but I could not get near enough to see it,but boy could you hear it.At this show was an spectacular radial engine that I could never imagine having the skill to achieve anything like it and I haven't come anywhere close. Thread: Recommendation for next project |
07/02/2021 23:35:18 |
Brian Rupnow does great plans for a small 4 stroke single cylinder engine .It's called a Rockerblock and it works a treat,I am now building an air cooled verticle engine of his design. His plans are excellent and at a reasonable price,He is also helpful if you need help ,the plans are sent to your computer as a file. The present engine is called a Thumper Rockerblock. The bulk of the aluminium cost about 200gbp. Thread: Hey you! What lathe? Why? |
06/02/2021 12:56:41 |
I have two Myfords, the oldest has no gearbox and is 63years old .I had it reground at Myfords 2006 and it is still a very accurate lathe .My other lahte is a large bore S7 Plus, which I bought at the Myford closing down sale it is a nice lathe to use for what I make.I made a 2" traction engine but Bought a Ward2A to turn the wheels and you certainly notice the difference in rigidity .I sold it to a factory for what I paid for it 400gbp in the mid eighties. Get the biggest you can accomodate and afford, you have to decide on the size of your projects in the future also. Frank |
Thread: JB weld |
03/02/2021 23:13:15 |
I am building an engine with two flywheels with fan blades instead of spokes for air cooling. It has caused me to make jigs to build them. The blades will be spot welded in position. I will use JB weld to create fillets at the joins and was wondering if the JB weld in a small spot will hold the blades whilst they are spot welded. Can someone recomend the correct JB and a supplier. Thread: Myford drive belt |
30/01/2021 11:52:33 |
Brammer belt, but the one with the metal rivet head if they are still availible ,they are a composite material and give a good grip.I have an old S7 which was fitted with a Brammer belt to stop vibration 32 years ago and is still going.I tried the new twist type of belt on my other S7 but got nothing but slippage,so I removed the spindle and fitted the correct v belt which cured the problem. Thanks Jason, you have to bore the hub to size as there is a jig to make with a 45 deg, slope to fit a pin of 1/2" so that the slots for the blades can be cut in the hub.I will do as you suggest .The jig for welding will be next after the rims. Thanks again. Frank |
27/01/2021 13:06:50 |
I am building 2 flywheels for Brian Rupnows Thumper Rockerblock i/c engine.I have made the hubs and am starting on the 6" rims which are joined to the hubs with veins at an angle to make fans to cool the cylinder. These fan blades are welded in both the hubs and the rims. The rims finish at 3/4" and I ask for advice on how much to leave on the rims in case of distortion after being welded. |
