Thread: Simpler the Better -what do you use? |
19/02/2010 10:41:50 |
Is there any way in any of the packages which would let me "lock" the line to say only horizontal just like the parallel motion of a real drawing machine? Please do not suggest using the grid, that is still too much of a pain. |
Thread: Oil for Lathe GearBox |
18/02/2010 16:42:56 |
Motor is 3hp on the Harrison M300. AWS 32 [or NUTO 23] grade oil is a Hydraulic Oil, it really is like water. |

Codehopper, here is another link which shows Castrol range. I think the 1000 refers to SG as in SG220 oil. Castrol have a 1100. Have a look here.

My Harrison M300 headstock runs on very thin Hyspin AWS 32. The oil in the screwcutting gearbox is a 220 grade try e mail to [email protected] this is their office at Canary Wharf , London. Regards K |

Are you sure it is Meropa 1000? This strikes me as very thick oil for a headstock. |

I am more than supportive of our present Editor, however I think it was a shame that valuable letter space was taken up by such drivel, space that we, the Readers, actually pay for. So perhaps we can all let it rest there and move on? Edited By KWIL on 14/02/2010 10:01:38 |
Thread: Has anyone any experience of HQSS tools – notably taps and dies? |
13/02/2010 16:23:23 |
HQSS are made by a British Company Tap & Die www.tapdie.com, branded Totem, at least you can talk to them if you have any trouble which is more than some overeseas made products of doubtful origin. They can tap Stainless so I guess they are not only hard but wear resistant. Edited By KWIL on 13/02/2010 16:23:57 Edited By KWIL on 13/02/2010 16:24:15 |

I am sorry but the charge should be "bringing a respected publication into disrepute" There are enough cranks and politicians out there without encouraging own own. I thought for a moment I had got the date wrong! |
Thread: Turbine Blades |
11/02/2010 11:49:53 |
With a 50mm 3 bladed left or right handed prop costing around £10 is it really worth the effort to make one ? www.westbourne-model.co.uk |
11/02/2010 09:34:52 |
You could consider the following. Mark out the profiles of each blade on a piece of material thick enough for the final blade set. On the trailing edge of each blade, plunge down a narrow cut. Rotate by a suitable amount and plunge down again, BUT not so far, keeping the edge of the cut close to the intended pitch and so on. Turn over and again repeat the same. You COULD end up with roughly ribbed set of blades, then a lot of filling. Alternatively you could buy a model ship propellor and mount it in a tube. |
Thread: Slow loading pages. |

Left this thread, tried another thread, returned here by using "My Postings" each stage only took 3 seconds each, I am not so sure it is this site you are having problems with. I am using Firefox + XP on this computer. |

Fitted an I plate some time ago, my best is 4.9mb and typically 4.3mb away from the ebening home from school time when the ntework does slow down to around 3.6mb. BT's price is around 3 times what you need to spend!! |
Thread: Constructing a D1-4 Mount |
07/02/2010 09:41:02 |
Now we find the real requirement the above discussion has become academic. So one question for Meyrick, reversed thrust line? If you turn the plug with a boring tool set parallel to the lathe axis and the machine running in reverse, check the taper angle [fortunately my DRO wil measure that angle without me doing the trig], then bore the taper with the machine running forward, then tool spring apart, the thrust line are the same?? |
06/02/2010 11:51:52 |
7 Degrees 7 Minutes 30 Seconds, also bear in mind the tolerance on the diameter of the taper, the Spindle Nose dimension at the base of the cone is 2.5005" + 0.0005", this controls the concentricity of the mounting. It would be worth making a plug test jig if you do not have another spindle nose to check against. You make and check your plug guage, then retain the final topslide angle to cut the internal taper. |

Beware, some of the backplates that are offered for sale are VERY poorly made, see before you buy! |
Thread: Spindle Speed |
06/02/2010 10:03:40 |
Do you think this one has been "spun" out for long enough? [and I have VFD and DROs on four machines!!] |
05/02/2010 14:03:26 |
Circlip, What/who is a DRO's mate? |
05/02/2010 10:51:35 |
Why this obsession for knowing the exact speed? Once you have established the range available a close approximation is usually sufficient, does it really matter if you are at 1075RPM rather than 1000? With a insert tipped tool you know if it is the right speed by the surface finish and the swarf, if it is HSS then most amateurs run them more slowly than commercial speeds to achieve a longer life. As Gerald Weare says, there is a potentiometer on a VFD, if you use a 10:1 dial drive on this your can have 100 divisions over the range and it is linear. 46 is 920 RPM if the max is 2000 for instance. |
Thread: How about a section on material sources |
03/02/2010 22:55:14 |
Folkestone Engineering Services, run by a model engineer for model engineers. Good honest pricing and service.[www.metal2models.btinternet.co.uk] College Engineering Services , good range, reasonable prices and also deliver to exhibitions at no extra cost. Cultivate your local scrappy, you will be surprised what turns up, I bought a piece of high grade aluminium alloy, 6"" diameter for £10 and got, what if cut off for me would have been £70+ . Just get to know your alloys and be careful what you buy. Aircraft grades can be a *** to machine. |
Thread: Spindle Speed |

I copied these discs as a check on the inverter set up on my machines and they are a good way of checking, I also have a separate commercial RPM strobe machine now should I need it. |
