I also for got to add there are quite a few model engineering machinist that you can put your requirements to them and get a quote for gears that you might want. The other way is seeing if there is any other model which uses similar gears that one of the model engineering suppliers keeps that gear in stock. It worth looking on the net and on Ebay. |
16/10/2014 12:50:16 |
The other firms that I have used for gears if I havn't made my own are Duval gears in Hartfield, WMH transmissions limited in Tamworth Staffordshire, and Relience gears. Most of these you can buy on-offs I would think and these days lots of the model engineering suppliers seem to keep gears in stock |

I have found that College engineering services keep some square Silver Steel I wonder if anyone know if KEA108 with seleainum is still available, this is a free cutting silver steel which the clock makers seem to use for pinions because of it good free cutting machinability.

Thread: Anyone ever hear of New England machine tools |
27/09/2014 13:56:29 |
Hi Ronan, The Realm-Royal 10" which I spoke about earlier was taken over by Denfords who had taken over Tom Senior. and later marketed under the Viceroy-Royal went metric from 10" now to 250mm and so I am told made up to 1979 Denfords moved resently and all the old drawing data base has been scaned and quite a lot of the parts of the shaper are in the archive drawing section of Viceroy machine tools so you if needed can look at the drawing to make new parts for either the Realm-Royal or the Denfords-Viceroy-Royal shapers. |

Rohan, As well as the Alba and the Elliott the shaper look very much like the Realm-Royal 10" which developed in to the Viceroy-Royal 250mm they both have the same four speeds and the clutch and the top slide is the flat tenon type rather than the vee type. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Metal_Shapers/photos/albums/930406761/lightbox/1558616861?orderBy=ordinal&sortOrder=asc&photoFilter=ALL#zax/1558616861 A link on to the Yahoo web page on shapers

Thread: Can you identify this travelling lathe steady? |
25/09/2014 19:15:59 |
The Steady is a Raglan Little John's travelling steady. Some one has said there are steadies being made. I have made an enlarged fixed steady which takes up to 6 inch as is an enlarged copy of the original https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/RaglanMachineTools/photos/albums/1368661895 This is the link to the steadies on the site |
Thread: David Urwick's original Metalmaster |
25/09/2014 15:03:50 |
The Labormill seems very simalar to the metalmaster with simalar attachments and about the same scoop to do any job. http://WWW.lathes.co.uk/labormill/index.html I run the Raglan Machine Tool website on Yahoo and have been asked from time to time of both of these machines. I have seen the Labormill in the flesh but only pictures of the Metalmaster and I am very impressed by the tasks they both can take on. |

Thread: Heat Treatment Colour Chart |
23/09/2014 21:14:09 |
I have just got home and opened the MEW magazine. Lot to read and very interesting subjects. I have got to the steel heat treatment chart and the colours and the temperature at that colour. What would of been very useful is the different items that we heat treat and the colour that we need to take the temper to for given tools. This can be looked up in machinery's hand book or Tom D Walshaws (Tubal Cain) book in the workshop Practice Series No1 book but would of been very good if included on the colour chart which we could all cut out and laminate and have in our workshops. What do other think?
