Thread: At my wit's end - need help please
16/03/2020 19:15:39

Hi folks,

Trying to breath new life into a neglected 8" bench grinder as above.

All looks OK but the wiring is all over the place - nothing connected to anything!
Picked up a new capacitor just in case but I can't find a wiring diagram anywhere - Draper were no help at all.

Knowing my own limits I don't want to just faff about, so I'm hoping some of you more knowledgeable folks may be able to help PLEASE

Kind regards,

Ruaidhri

Hi again after a lonnnnnggggg time (it's also a long story).

Just a quick mention that there's a website with a ton of good stuff on the Stringer:

Well worth a look.

Thread: My Stupid Hat is jammed on....
24/09/2013 17:33:08

Thank you gentlemen.

Stupid hat is now off, and I am considering taking lessons in reading blush

My only excuse is that I'm Irish LOL

OK, so I put on my stupid hat and it's stuck, so I need help.

Looking at the two tables for button tool sizes on pages 114 and 115 of Ivan Law's book "Gears and Gear Cutting" I find myself mystified.

The table shows the button diameter for a button for 20deg pressure angle No. 1 cutter as 51.30 Ins., and others similarly sized. Rather large button tool crook

There are a number of possibilities-

  1. A whole series of misprints
  2. Ivan Law knows nothing about gears
  3. I am stupidly missing something.

  1. Given that the same type of info appears on page 115 (for 30 deg) this seems unlikely
  2. Can be dismissed out of hand
  3. HELP!!!!

Can any of our mandarins shed some light please?

Regards,

Ruaidhrí

Wow! What did I start? smiley

Due to a succession of illnesses my own is still unfinished, but most definitely not forgotten.

Unfortunately my friend who gave me this little gem passed away last month, but is fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Now I need to look up the "Amazing Get Murphy Off His A... Device" which, coupled with a decent winch, should get me moving blush

Thanks for all the help.

Like Neil, I had only seen the description in Ivan Laws book but unfortunately ? I am drawn to things that work in mysterious ways

Can't say I can justify making one, but I will, just to scratch the itch.

Cheers,

Ruaidhrí

Another would-be Eureka maker here

Have the materials ready, bought the book, but I'd love to read the original articles.

Naturally the offending - vols 185,159,160 (issues 3794, 3796, 3804, 3820) fall neatly into a gap in my little collection!

If I could beg, borrow or steal these I'd be a happy bunny - any reasonable cost would be OK.

Ruaidhrí

Thanks guys!

Things in Dublin a little fraught for some time, so not much progress.

Quick "by the way" - I tried out rust removal on some waste, then the change wheels. Worked a treat. Found it on YouTube. Some Aussie bloke wot restores cars: uses 9 parts water with 1 part molasses, and soaks for a week or so, then a light scrub. I was astonished - it sounded more like somthing from the Goon Show

Mate found the final missing jaw for "The Burnerd" 3 jaw which came with it, so I'm a happy bunny again.

Some good news today - my friend rang to say he has finally found the original motor (buried in his workshop!) with switch, and the original chuck. Also found the motor bracket, so that should be a complete job

With the super amount of info from Ian (thanks again) it looks like I'll be a busy bunny for some time to come

I hope to collect during the week & will post pics if anyone is interested.

Thread: Milling on Myford
21/02/2011 12:29:21
Again quite a gap between posts

Turns out (after much poking and prodding) that I have a new item in the workshop - Coeliac Disease

Back to the point - THANKS to you all I plucked up courage again and attacked several bits of assorted junk.
Have tried milling, cutters, slot drills, slitting saws etc., all with some success after a bit of initial faffing about.
Even got ambitious and made up a cutter for the 0.1cc comp. ign. engine I have just started - and it worked!!

It would appear that asking questions, listening to people who Know Stuff, and practice, is the way to go.

Thank you all,
Ruaidhrí

Thread: Metric screw cutting
21/02/2011 12:22:09
As mentioned elsewhere here, I have been woodturning for decades and only started with a Myford Super 7 a couple of years ago. Added the gearbox, and picked up the metric conversion.

Recently our chapter of the Irish Woodturning Guild won a Nova lathe at a seminar. Very cool and delight all round.

The Nova has a 33 x 3.5 spindle nose, and it would be handy to be able to knock up bits for it, BUT I am slightly concerned at the idea of stepping UP the gearing.
Probably just a beginner's worry - but I'd rather have some advice from those who know a bit before I destroy my Myford

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ruaidhrí
BTW - Dirk - mail sent, thanks

Hi again,

Slight delay, which can be blamed on one Professor Gleeson and Coeliac Disease.
Flaming nuisance, and God I'd kill for a fresh loaf with black crunchy crust

Ian, - yes, I'd really appreciate as much info as possible - email still the same.

Haven't progressed at all, except for some tidying up on the countershaft.

More anon,

Ruaidhrí

Nearly ready to get back in action again chaps

Away looking after grandkids - and evicted (with Sheila) while the two lads paint the house for us - inside and out!!!
No way was I turning down an offer like that.

Hoping to get back to the EW next week after I've gotten blanks & stuff readu for woodturning students.

I'll bang up pics as work progresses and, once again, thanks for all the help and advice.

Fond regards,
Ruaidhrí

Thanks Keith - I'll look into having a nephew pick some up before his next visit to the Oul Sod (Ireland , that is, not me - although it could well apply!!).

Checked out car restorers. bike restorers. I have a 2000 Jag XJ8 and nobody in the club has any ideas either.

Crinkle paint and good quality chroming seem to be something we Irish can't get to grips with

Luckily I've gotten sidetracked sorting out GHT's attachment to allow use of the Myford dividing head on the headstock (nearly there - just to turn the taper and slot the collar for the spindle) so I'm not at a loose end.

Cheers for now,
Ruaidhrí

Terry,

Checked that out (thanks). €73 per can of non-aerosol, and needs oven baking. Having nearly killed SWMBO's last microwave *  during a wood seasoning 'experiment' I dare not do the same with the cooker

Ian,

Not sure about the tensioner yet - I'm very much on a wing and a prayer here
Haven't got the motor yet, but I can measure up the pulleys if you don't mind waiting a day or two - my woodturning classes are about to start & I have students ringing & calling every ### five minutes. Also need to get blanks, fittings etc. organised. And an article on "design considerations - catenary curves" to write up for our newsletter on Thursday. And a tailstock to fix for a mate. And .......

I thought retirement was supposed to be feet up and relax!!

Cheers,
Ruaidhrí

* You can season wood really quickly in a microwave. Trick is NOT to answer the front door  to chatty friend in the middle of the proceedings - couldn't see from one side of the kitchen to the other.

I won't teach my granny to suck eggs here - most of my turning life has been with wood - only got the Myford a few years ago and am still trying to become a beginner

On the subject of the crinkle paint - can't be had for love or money in Ireland - and can't get a supplier to post aerosols. Unless someone has any bright ideas I'll test out the sand idea on some waste. Bearing in mind that it will be dusted on to wet varnish, then sprayed/painted over, it should (??) be fairly well locked in.

As mentioned elsewhere, I am Irish, so expect some of my cunning plans to have the effect of raising the hair on Baldric's head

Couple of pics added to Picasa Album
The newspaper underneath lends an elegant touch (SWMBO likes her dining room table!).

Finally - I'd be interested if anyone knows where I can get a couple of the handles re-chromed CHEAP. Again I'm afraid our little republic (??) leaves something to be desired.

Fond regards,
Ruaidhrí

HI gang,

Just off to bed - but I'll pop up a few pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

A quick sickener - my EW cost me €Nutting. I believe in Sterling that's £Sod All, or $Zilch. Not sure about Yen

So far going really well, with a few mandrels in the Myford, and a brass brush on the Record the clean-up is proceeding apace.

Had a phone call yesterday from my mate who gave it to me to say he has found the original motor (reversible) which is working perfectly, after 50 years sitting in his workshop!!

More anon - and thanks again Ian for the scans,
Ruaidhrí

Couple of quick thoughts -
Zebo fire grate polish works a treat on the crinkle finish. On the bits where it is stripped I intend to experiment (obviously on waste first) with a thin coat of varnish dusted with sand, then sprayed black.
Originally a scale plane & ship modeller I can't help doing thesert of things
09/12/2010 18:49:59
Ooops - should have mentioned - there are a bunch of other pics on that Picasa collection - nothing private, so feel free to poke about if any of you are REALLY bored :D

FWIW I've uploaded a few pics of mine  here
http://picasaweb.google.com/rstjmurphy

I'd be delighted to have a chat anytime as work progresses - I have so much to learn!!
A quick email to [email protected] & I can pass on my phone number - obviously not putting it up on the interwebtube
or we could arrange a time for a chat session on Messenger??

The last pic of it partly reassembled is only for my own pleasure - it still needs some work there, and also needs to be washed down and resprayed. Mulling over the idea of having the handles etc. rechromed - that will depend on cost.

One last thought - anyone want to buy a small island on the west coast of Europe. Cheap. One not very careful owner. Apply Dáil Éireann, Leinster House, Dublin. Tell them Ruaidhrí sent you.

Regards,
Ruaidhrí
