Thread: Why is it so hard to find materials in the UK? |
14/08/2011 11:49:26 |
I have a small but dwindling stock of various metal,it is very difficult to obtain odds and ends to keep up the stock. One time you could walk into a scrapyard and pick over what they had,but now they don't even want you in there, unless you are selling them, some scrap. So probably from now on, when i decide on a specific project, i will just bite the bullet and buy the metal to build it.Who knows i might even get some offcuts from it !! Thread: Non Myford/mini Lathe |

Hi David
I must say that your reply about me doing an article on my lathe has given me something to think about. As it's getting colder in the Workshop now,i may have the time to do it.

Hi David,Thanks for the kind reply.I thought i was going to get some flak on that.
I have recently completed a full strip and rebuild with new motor and inverter setup,on the Mk 2 Little John. But a journalist i am not. Also if you can get a comment or two on YOUR!! article,I have got no chance, and you would be inundated with complaints that would fill "Scribe a Line" for two months.

Hi Bob
Yep,definitely in the minority. Is it possible to run a club with only two members?

Would there be any possibility from time to time, of devoting a couple of pages of MEW, to non Myford and non mini Lathes.OK i realise that a lot of the readership owns Myford and or Mini Lathes, but there must be many readers like me who don't own a Myford, through choice, not financial considerations.
Please don't get me wrong i don't want to knock Myford Lathes i think the Myford is a brilliant piece of kit,(a good one that is ) It's just that i prefer my slightly larger Raglan Little John, which is also a brilliant piece of kit.

Thread: Milling Machine Low Speed Torque |
01/08/2009 21:24:15 |
Hi peter
Yes i see the problem with flycutting and use of a speed controller.I agree with richmond on the multipoint facing cutters, looks like that is the best bet.But i like using a flycutter at times, although it's not the fastest cutter to use.But i do find it is the cheapest. So it must be a pain for you if you like to use it.
However,i must agree to disagree with richmond about the torque on the inverter at low speed,at least as far as my inverter is concerned. If you ever think about changing to inverter use i can certainly point you in the direction of the right man to ask for advice.(not me i might add).

Hi Peter
When you say that you are using electronic control do you mean that you are using an inverter,or just a speed control.I use an inverter on my Mill/drill and lathe but i don't lose hardly any torque at low speed on mine, simply because i paid extra and purchased the the one that keeps torque through the whole range.Thats why i have never quite understood, when i read that people who have inverters lose the torque at low speeds, and i have read this on a number of occasions. Please feel free to contact me on Message member if you wish.

Thread: Outrageous Set-ups! |
17/07/2009 22:59:26 |
Looking at the comments about setups reminded me of a friend who some years ago worked for a large engineering firm here in dorset, the company is now long gone.Being the new boy he wasn't accepted by the old hands(that's the way it was there). My friend worked on the milling M/Cs and one morning was given a large job to set up.After a while he got it set up and started the M/C up and it went bang.He had only set the clamps up lightly as he was doing the setup, and forgot to tighten them properly. The guy on the next M/C to him ambled over to him and said "THAT WAS BAD LUCK MATE, I SAW THAT YOU HADN'T TIGHTENED THEM UP".No answer to that.
