Thread: How do I identify chuck to find jaws to fit ? |
05/12/2022 16:29:00 |
Quick thank you to all for your advice. I've got the new Vevor chuck installed. Quality is absolutely fine for my needs & great value for money. As suggested the original backplate was the right size so I've turned & drilled it to suit the new chuck & all running nice & centred. So I finally got to start my first (very basic) project, a new shaft for an egg chair, and it all got a bit much for the old Hoover motor it was running on ! New TEC motor now ordered which I need to make a baseplate for and bush out to take original pulley. So my £300 lathe has now cost me another £150 so far - perhaps I should've spent more on a better one to start with but it's all an interesting learning curve & hopefully there's not much left to go wrong with it (famous last words) ! Cheers, Neil. |

Hi all, I need a set of outside jaws for my chuck but I don't know how to identify what I need. It's 4" but there are no distinguishing marks although it looks like a Pratt Burnerd (see photos). All I have is the current inside jaws code which is 36956.
Many thanks, Neil |
Thread: Beswick G5 Lathe - Top Slide |

Thanks for the advice Clive. I removed the spacer & found dovetail underneath (see photo). It's 1 5/8" diameter, 9/16" high & base is 2 3/4" below centre. Any thoughts as to solution ? Many thanks, |

Thanks for everyone's advice. The previous owner added the toolpost but top slide was missing when he got it. It's not a major issue to use the main leadscrew, it works fine but it's just a bit clunky/ratchety to use (presume some gear wear). I'll live with it for now but keep an eye out on Ebay for a solution. |

I recently purchased a Beswick G5 lathe. I'm very happy with my purchase however being a complete novice I didn't spot that it dioesn't have a top slide. I'd therefore appreciate any advice on adding one, are they standard fit, do I need a specific Beswick one, can I adapt one to fit, etc ? Many thanks, Neil |

I have some of that variety too - flying ducks inherited from grandparents ! |

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to start off with 2nd hand older machine and a Beswick (C H Joyce) G5 came up locally with a few extras, tooling, gauges, etc. Pulley wheel a little sloppy on the axis & the left to right traverse cog has a little play but other than that seems very solid, functions quite nicely & perfect for my beginner's needs. Just got to rewire (as had to cut it to remove from seller's bench) and then hopefully onto my first very basic project (a new shaft for my son's egg chair) this weekend. Cheers, Neil |

Thanks all for the great advice. No real constraints on size or budget but I was hoping for a small machine circa £500 just to get me started. I had been thinking just a small hobby lathe as I like the price, size, weight, no external pulleys, etc plus I think they'd be fine for the basic type of work I'd be doing. But then I start to read some bad reviews about how many are produced in China and just badged differently by different sellers and aren't of great quality, strength, accuracy. Then I start to think actually I'd quite like a powered feed, screwcutting, a slightly longer bed, higher clearance, etc, etc, etc... So as usual I'm going round in circles. I do keep landing on the Myford ML7 as a good solution but then that's a bigger machine & bigger budget. Neil |

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I'm nowhere near the skillset of a model engineer & would describe myself more as a tinkerer (or as wife says a professional bodger). I spend much of my time under old cars, fixing bikes, in the guts of a jukebox or making something for the local community (e.g. smoothie bike). I often need to manufacture parts (washers, fixings, etc) and my lack of a lathe has often resulted in me spending hours trawling ebay for something specific or having to get someone to make something for me. Which is what brings me here. I'm looking for a small lathe so will be looking through the forum pages for info & advice. Neil |
