Thread: Can you identify these hand tools?
23/12/2021 16:09:01

Hi MichaelR, I thought those 'best boot' tools were for getting the tyres off bicycle wheels when one had a puncture.

Hi All

Thank you Michael G for the link to the leatherworking website, very informative. Also Anthony for the explanation of why it is used for 'glazing' with hot wax.

Many thanks to Jams for his in depth analysis of the mystery white object in the photo. I have quite a number of these strange numbered sticks around the house but has so far found then useless for cutting or the insertion or removal of fixtures. I presume the two different scales are to accommodate the miserly and the generous, but I do take issue with the suggestion that they are for drawing straight lines see below

Can anyone tell me what these hand tools are used for?

Thread: Mamod Locomotive Rebuild
22/12/2021 21:10:54

Hi Brian G.

Thanks for the link to the bush tram site, it's quite amazing what has been done in the past with a borrowed boiler and a bit of chain drive.

I've used Dream Steam to provide the missing cylinders and some other parts for the project.

Many thanks for the welcome messages.

My parents had the foresight to buy me the Mamod Meccano steam engine when I was about 10 years old and later I was given the SE3 twin cylinder one. Many a happy hour spent with a bottle of meths and a box of matches using these to power contraptions I had created.

I have collected other Mamods since then including another Meccano one in a very sad state that I’m thinking of turning into a Tram style or geared loco to run alongside the locomotive featured in this thread.

Hi all, I recently signed up to the website and have been enjoying reading the forum posts so I thought I would share one of my ongoing projects with you. Some time ago I bought a rather sad looking Mamod railway locomotive on eBay as a restoration project. I’m rebuilding it as a 7/8” scale narrow gauge quarry/industrial type to run on SM32 peco track in my back garden.

I’ve fabricated a taller spectacle plate from brass sheet and an extended chimney as the first steps in the resizing process.

I’ll post updates as things progress.

Thread: New Member from Southampton

Thanks to all who have welcomed me to the forum.

In response to ega’s question about Myford lathes, they were, and still are typical equipment in the many small workshops around the University where I worked. For some of the smaller tasks I found it quite acceptable and I was happy to pick up a used one when the workshop was closed as a result of a reorganisation.
The small workshop I was in also had a fairly new Colchester Master which was a nice machine once I had sussed out that the cross slide had a 2.5mm pitch screw but had been fitted with a 0-2mm dial – so much for quality control !

Howard – I’m not planning on joining a local group as I already have a fairly packed diary pursuing my other interest in painting.

When I have worked out how the image albums work I will post some photos of what I am working on.

Hi Everyone
I’m William and I live in Southampton. I’ve just signed up to the website and this is my first forum post.

I have a background in mechanical engineering and spent quite a few years working in a small general workshop where I first started dabbling with model making and took out a subscription to Model Engineer magazine.

That was a long time ago now and it’s many years since I had access to a well-equipped workshop; however I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a Myford Super 7 from the workshop I had been working in when it closed. I am now concentrating on some smaller projects as time and resources allow.
