Hi, Neil. I recently did the same thing but was lucky enough to find the 2b column in my pile of bits. I only had to find some small parts like the arbor and overarm support. I'm on the lookout for the cabinet to stand it on as I ended up mounting mine on a substantial workbench. I hope you find the column.
The 2A column is definitely smaller than the 2b - I got one when I got the 2b so I've seen them side by side. The knee is also less substantial and the table is smaller.
Regarding your new leadscrew, are you cutting it to the original thread or using something more convenient. I ask as I was curious as to whether you'd cut your full-nut with the original square thread or perhaps gone with an ACME thread. I'm planning ahead for the day my half nut dies.
