Thread: Midland's Show & A Question |

also went to the show today, (Friday) stocked up on various bits of metal for future projects, particularly cast iron as that's sometimes hard to find online. not sure it was much cheaper but saved on the postage and also got some "that'll come in handy one day" bits too. the tools sellers were doing brisk business as well, seemed a good range of stuff, but got quite crowded by twelve. i travelled down from Sunderland early in the morning as I had another call to make beforehand, not sure I would make the journey just for the show but pleased I went. one thing to note, the parking is on grass and gravel so if you are not so good on your feet be careful, there was a good amount of disabled parking but again on gravel / grass. called into Arc euro trade on the way back, that was well worth it spent some more money, had a chat with the folks there and got some excellent advice about ways to fit a DRO to my lathe and mill too so all in all a grand day out as the saying goes Steve |
Thread: working Damascus steel |

thanks everyone, it was the decorative pattern that appealed, but after a measure and a re-think i have realised that the end caps idea won't work, the billet is probably meant to be a knife (approx. 300mm x 100 x 6mm ) as Martin mentioned so i will put it to one side for now, it's a very attractive pattern so will use it later as skills and ideas develop. thanks Thor for the Citric acid tip. will let you all know what happens when i do try it. i have been given a Damascus steel billet from which i would like to make a couple of end caps that will involve some milling and then turning to fit, (i am told the steel mix is 15n20 and 1095 if that helps), however being very new to this hobby my question is how easy / realistic is it for a novice to work this kind of material? thanks, Steve |

thanks Brian and Steve, no, no Morse code needed now (although it is gaining in popularity slowly) . Steve |

hello from the north east, new to machining, learning to use my sx2.7l mini mill and amabl210 lathe, and finding a lot of good advice here (thankyou). no specific area of interest yet, although making adaptors and bits for my amateur radio stuff and trying to make some of the tools and clamps as suggested by some of the YouTube folks, but mostly just enjoying acquiring new skills at the moment and sweeping up the amazing mess a mini mill makes.
