Sorry I should have put an update on the forum much earlier. I did manage to source the part I needed through Clarke and get the lathe up and running. Since this time, I have learnt through, James90, that there are no spare parts available for this lathe. I would seriously advise anyone thinking of buying any new lathe to check that spare parts are available. |

I know it’s been a while but thanks for all the replies and advice on this. with the help of a friend, we did manage to get a variable speed motor fitted Jack 563A Industrial Sewing Machine Heavy Duty 1HP Servo Motor for Most Machines | eBay and so far, so good. I now have the old motor leftover and its for sale along with the mill drill attachment which I took off when I first bought the lathe. I notice that there is no for sale section on the forum so I will probably list these on FB market place if nobody is interested on here? |

I have been keeping my eye out for such a motor for a while as it would be much cheaper this way. Nothing has popped up that I think would be suitable. I had a budget in mind before purchasing this lathe and I bought it fairly cheap which leaves me with some excess cash to spend on it. I think/hope that the tesla motor may add value, not that I would ever sell it.

Hi
I am looking to upgrade my Clarke cl430 to a variable speed motor. I have seen that the pre-wired CL750 by Newton-Tesla which includes control unit has been recommended. Looking on their website I can’t see this listed. Does anybody know of an alternative variable speed motor that would fit my lathe?
Kind regards Richard |

The lathe was bought as spares or repair. It was from a teaching trust so I think some student must have done this somewhere along the line. I took a bit of a gamble when buying. Hopefully its paid off. This part is cast. I think it is made like this to act as a weak link and not damage any other parts further in the lathe? It was the last one left in stock otherwise I would have got a spare. My lathe is running now and the screw threading is working. I just have to make a space for it to live before I can get to use it properly. I am looking to change over to motor to variable speed motor. I have emailed Newton Tesla but have had no reply. Has anyone done this to their lathe if so could you recommend a company for a variable speed motor or any links/info for me to view etc . Thanks Richard |

Hi I am looking to purchase a spare part for my Clarke CL500M lathe, please see photos in the attachment. As you can see the part has shattered and pieced back together for better viewing. Due to lack of detail on the Clarke pdf file I am unable to zoom in for the correct part I require. As such I have now received 2 incorrect parts from machine mart. These parts were from the gear train. 32 Spline Housing HT3000300232 and 18 Hex Socket Sliding Bush HT3000300118.
The auto feed is not engaging on my lathe which is why I assumed the part to be under the gear train category (PDF). Perhaps this may not be the case? I and another engineer have looked through the PDF file and we cannot see this part listed. I am hoping someone can help me with this as it is a very important that the gear train/auto feed is working correctly on my lathe. I have emailed Clarke and received no reply. I have also emailed machine mart but as above have received incorrect parts.
Cheers Richard |

Thank you for all your replies and all the advice is great to have. The lathe did not come with a centre chuck so this is another tool to add to my list. I have looked at the arceurotrade site before as I was thinking of buying the seig lathe from them. I didn’t realise that the sold all the tooling as well so I think I will use these. I do have a grinder to sharpen my chisels etc so hopefully I should be ok sharpening my own cutting tools. Thanks again for the advice Richard |

v Hi my name is Richard. I started my career an apprentice joiner in 1985. After this, I trained as a locksmith as I found that it was a rewarding and satisfying career move which I enjoyed and still do to this day. I learnt my locksmithing skills during the period from 1996 to 2001 training under a master locksmith namely Tom Steel of Steels locksmiths Hull. Tom was the first Master locksmith in Hull and began trading in 1979. He encouraged me to join the Master locksmith association. In 2008 I qualified as a master locksmith. As I have flitted between both the locksmith and joinery trade I probably understand wood better that metal. A few years back I bought a small used milling machine. This has served me well and I have made some useful tools for my trade on this. After wanting a metal lathe for a long time I have finally managed to find a used Clarke CL500. I have not used a lathe since I was at school so I am hoping to get some advice on here. First and foremost I need some tooling as the lathe only came with 2 dead centres. Would it be best to buy carbide inserts or the other type. Should I buy a set or just one or two to get me started. I would like a knurling tool to enable me to make thumb turns for the end of my picks but there are many available. These will be made out of 25mm round bar, around 10mm thickness with a 3mmish hole through the centre. So for now I am thinking I only need a knurling tool and a parting off tool. This will be a small project to get me back into using a lathe. After this a have lots more tools I would like to make |
