I want to remove the saddle, apron and gearbox to clean everything. Is there anybody who has stripped one of these lathes who can tell me where to start and in what sequence I should remove the parts? Thank you |

OK gentlemen, I have good news: I put the 750w single phase motor on the lathe and it runs without kicking my power off. Now I must just learn how to operate the lathe. Thank you for all you inputs and advice, I appreciate it. |

Thank you for all the replies, I appreciate your help. So, I removed the drive belt to test the motor alone- it still kicks my power off without any load. I tested my 1.1kW motor and it starts and runs from my solar system. I just hope it will still start with a load. I guess I will have to find another pulley for it. The plate on the 1.1kW motor says 1360 RPM, 7.4A and it has a 125mm pulley on. The pulley on the headstock is 160mm and 60mm on the old motor. On the headstock pulley cover there is a brass plate that says 550 RPM. So with the 125mm pulley the headstock pulley will run 1062 RPM instead of 550. So I will need a 65mm pulley on the motor.

Thank you all for your help. Thanks Roger. I sent you an email. I will first try the 1.1kW motor. |

The motor does not have a plate anymore. The motor runs when I plug it into the generator, but I do not want to start the generator every time I want to work on the lathe. Than you |

Hello everybody, I just found this old Keighley lifts lathe and I need to clean it up and get it working. My first problem: I only have an off-grid solar power system on the farm with (SMILE5) 5kW inverter (220V, single phase, 20A output) and 11.4kWh Li-ion batteries. When I start the lathe it kicks my power off, so either the motor is too big, or it is faulty. Do you guys think that I can replace the motor with a single phase motor, or should I rather look at a 3-phase with a VSD inverter. I have a 2.2kW, 3-phase inverter, but I will need to find a motor. I also have a couple of single phase motors: a 750W and a 1.1kW. Does anybody know where I can download a manual for this lathe? Thank you |
Thread: Hello from South Africa |

Hello from a sunny South Africa. I am a cattle farmer and try collecting and restoring old farm implements and machines. I have always wanted a small lathe to make bushes and parts and finally last week I found one: a very old Keighley Lifts Lathe with serial number DF494. It is still running, but I want to restore it. Unfortunately I know nothing about lathes and my research led me to this very interesting forum. I hope I can learn more here and maybe also find a manual for my lathe. The first problem I have is that the motor kicks my solar power system off. So, I will have to replace the motor with something that will work on my off-grid system.
