Good afternoon all. I picked up my Warco WM180 yesterday and have set it up and cleaned it. I purchased some way oil while I was there. However, I note there are a number of oil nipples on the machine and my question is what sort of oil should I use for those, is it OK to use the same way oil? Appreciate any advice. |

I've ordered a starter set of both HSS and insert tools. Figured it was worth trying both. |

Thanks for the advice gents, I've ordered a selection of mild steel, ali and brass to practice on. |

Thanks for your thoughts Mike. Safety is always paramount to me. Although new to lathes I have been using varIous power tools for many years (angle grinder, bandsaw, chop saw, etc) and having minced the tip of a finger on a table router many years ago I am super cautious. |

Thank you Howard, a most informative post. I already have a couple of books as this purchase has been several years in the making. I also already have calipers, micrometers, taps & dies, a bench grinder, drills, and a dial indicator & base which I have collected and used for other things over the years. I have however had to order a live centre, tailstock drill chuck and some turning tools (I ordered a basic set of HSS and insert tools to try out), along with some other bits and pieces. The lathe is coming with both a 3 and 4 jaw chuck, which is handy.

Thanks Roger. Yes, i'm currently in the process of ordering various ancillaries, up to around another £200 so far. A lathe is something I've fancied getting for a number of years, in terms of making parts eventually I would like to make parts for scale models and some bits for my firearms. Cheers, B |

I've just had a look at Macc's website. Do I want bright steel or silver steel??
Edited to add, ignore that, I see the mild steel is EN1A as mentioned above, and cheap too. Edited By Robert Bowen-Cattry on 24/05/2021 11:25:00 |

Many thanks for the replies. As a newbie I assumed steel would be harder to practice on, but what has been said make sense. Cheers. |

Good morning gents.
I'm soon to be the proud owner of a new mini lathe and I'm wanting to order some material to practice on. I'm thinking probably brass, aluminum and delrin are good starter materials before I progress to steel. I'm just wondering where id a good source for material, I don't want to spend a fortune at this stage on material that will probably end up in the bin. Cheers, B |

Good morning all, I have been fascinated with model engineering for a while now, and have just (literally this morning) ordered a small lathe. I'm looking forward to learning some new skills and hopefully putting it to good use. All the best, B Edited By Robert Bowen-Cattry on 24/05/2021 10:58:08 |

Morning guys, thanks for the welcome. Bazle, I'm in NW London, near Harrow. Brian, thats a good question. I have a list of things things I'd like to make as my skills improve including bore guides to help clean my rifles as well as parts for scale models (I build military jets and armoured fighting vehicles). To be honest there is no specific reason for the lathe purchase, it's something I've fancied trying for a few years, and as it looks like we won't be able to go on our summer holiday this year due to teh pandemic I now have a surplus of cash to spend on something.

Hi guys, I decided to join up to the forum as I am about to embark on my first lathe process and I'm hoping to learn lots here as I am a complete newbie to machining metal (other than with an angle grinder). Cheers, Bob |
