Thread: Who is Right? |

I have recently resurrected a 6v Lantern battery. I gave it short bursts of 12v during the charging process which some schools of thought suggest and it appears to have done the trick What are members thoughts and/or experiences in a) using this method OR b) suggest an alternative method? |

Hi John My display looked as if it was leaking and the digits were blurring and merging. The new display fixed it. |

I suppose like me some of you possess a bench top multi-meter in my case it was a second hand Fluke 8010A which I purchased a number of years ago. Its a very versatile tool and whilst they are somewhat long in the tooth they stand the test of time. Apart that is for the LCD display. Even when I bought mine the display was less than crisp and over time it got more blurred and was getting to the stage where I was thinking of replacing it. But like we all do it time of need I started trolling the Internet and came across a site which among other things addressed my problem completely and provided a step by step guide to sourcing and fitting a replacement LCD So after spending just over £5 and some judicious soldering I now have a bench top meter with a crisp clear display and hopefully will endure for a good number of years. I cannot speak to highly of the web site for the assistance and support that I received.Give it a look there are other repair types mostly related to Radio Amateurs at billingtonrepairs.wordpress.com Edited By Stuart McPherson on 11/08/2020 19:16:15 |

Thread: Neil Hemingway Kits |

Thanks for that it is just the information I was hoping for. |

Going back to the early nineties I purchased a fair number of kits from Neil Hemingway and spent many an hour with him putting the world to rights. During lock down I have got round to making some of these. One of them H86 has got me stumped. I had thought it was the bending roll kit but checking it against the parts list I am not so sure although there may be some other parts in another box. I wonder if anyone has an original kit list from Neil which may throw some light on the issue and save me searching numerous boxes for end plates and gears. I have spoken to Hemingways Kits but alas they do not have an original list and have re numbered their kits. |
Thread: Bench Mounted Engraving Machine |

Hi Bizibilder The article I am working from is the one you refer to and the machine does have the two part rod you mention. My confusion arises as when I bought the part built machine the motor pillar was not quite tight and being a purist I tightened it and now I am not sure I did the right thing. |

Has anyone built the Bench Mounting engraving Machine described in Model Engineer May 1955 Vol 175. I am confused as to whether the motor pillar should be tight or allow the motor to pivot in unison with the cutter head/pantograph. If it is swivelling I am not sure how the tension stays on the drive belt. Any thoughts? |

Hi Allen I was looking back over some early MEWs and there was an article on a spring loaded centre locator for the drilling machine. The spring used was from a retractable ball point pen. These are about the correct diameter and I have used them in the past on projects and the pressure is quite strong. May be worth a try. Regards Stuart |

Hi Steviegtr and IanT Ill get the hang of this computer thing, pity I can't go to the night school. The reason I say this is I responded to Chris,s welcome and query and thought it would appear here but it must have gone to him only. Anyway thank you both for your welcome and I will try and make something interesting. I mainly do workshop bits and I was telling Chris I am a great devotee of Hemingways Kits. Indeed I used to call on Neil on my way back so inevitably there are some castings to be sorted and worked on. |

Hi Everyone From the 60 s I started to gather my workshop I bought an ML7 which was dismantled and came in a number of boxes for starters and eventually managed over the ensuing years to get quite a comprehensive set up. Attending evening classes was a great benefit alas there are very few colleges offering them now. I subscribed to Model Engineer and subsequently MEW up until late 80 s but from then until 2004 I was commuting from Monday to Friday and the workshop was a no go. When I eventually retired I had a few bursts of enthusiasm but the fact that my workshop is in the rear of a double garage with only the up and over door I got to the stage that I could not open the door from the inside. This was solved recently when a motorised door was fitted and here I am back and what with Lock down the machines have been dusted down and I am cutting metal again. |
