Thread: Myford super7 saddle / tight toward tailstock
18/12/2021 09:39:32

My name is Werne and I am from Germany.
I own a Myford S7 MKI from 1955 with an already reground bed but again worn from the pre-owner. After long thinking I decided to let the bed regrind again in the Netherlands from Frans van der Meeren from myfordsolutions.com
https://myfordsolutions.com/

For me it was important to get to know Frans and see his workshop. Frans is a lovely gentleman with a well equiped workshop and a large grindning machine. I live in South Germany so it was a 1000km trip to bring him the bed and saddle.
My bed was too much worn for a regrind so Frans took another bed and saddle from his srock of used parts.
With the regind he did an excellent job and he knows exactly what and how to do which I think is very important.
I could have send the bed in a wooden box, but that was not what I wanted to do.
So Frans is highly recommended by me.

Frans plans to do regrinds still the next year and then wants to sell the grinding machine but will keep on selling spare parts.

Hi Stephen,

I can not see any pait on the Myford website. May be you have to call them, they should supply it.

On a dutch website from Fans van der Meeren who restores Myford an is extremly helpful he offers paint.
I bought some parts for my S7 from 1955.

https://myfordsolutions.com/search?q=paint

He speeks Dutch or English if you want to call him by phone.

Hi John,

interesting to read about your repair method with HPC gears.
For all metric threads they run over only one pair of gears in the old gearbox. This pair is very worn but could not be replaced during the repair at Myford. The nice fitter who repiard the gearbox explained me what was wrong inside. Furthermore he said that the metric worn gears will "work als long as you live".

Hi Pete,

my name is Werner and I am from Germany. I own an eraly S7 with gearbox as well. Serial no SK3853 on the bed and 1184 on the gearbox. The gearbox unfourtunately has the soft gears.

In 1995 on holidays in UK I visited Myford and asked for a repair because the metric threads didn't work. I had no appointment and the repair was done within one day. Lovely

The S7 lost its precision so I am very intersted in your report and looking forward for the continuations.

The BMW pricelist in 1962 says for a R50S = 3535 Mark, R50 Standard = 3130 Mark and for a VW Beetle Standard = 4200 Mark. the BMW top model R69S says 4030 Mark. So to drive BMW was expensive.

Hi Chris,
interesting information. Where did you get this information from?
My BMW book says 1634 R50S and 32546 R50 + R50/2

Hello Chris Evans and the others,

thank you for your warm welcome.
The BMW R50S was even in Germany a very rare bike, so i think much more rare in UK.
With 7600 rpm it had a much higher rpm than the standard R50 with 5600 rpm.

Since 1980 I own a R50 from 1955 but meanwhile "upgraded" with a 750 cc plainbearing engine, gearbox and final drive.

Hello,

as a new member of the forum, see "New in the forum from Germany" I search older articles of Model Engineer and Model Engineers Workshop which the publisher can not provide with back issuses.
Neil Wyatt gave me the advice to give it a try here in the forum.

So I am looking for Model Enginner:
Alan Hearsum: Rebuilding a Myford ML7 Lathe
2014, Volume 212. Issues 4473, 4475, 4477, 4479, 4481, 4483

Model Enginners Workshop
Alan Hearshum: Roller bearing upgrade to ML7 lathe
2013 Issues 209 November, 2010 December
2014 Issue 211 January

If someone could make copies or scans this would be wonderful. Certainly I will pay for all expenses.

Many thanks in advance and best regards
Werner

Hello,

my name is Werner and I am from Germany.

Since 30 years I own an eraly Myford Super 7 lathe from 1955 with gearbox. Unfortunately it is the “early type “ gearbox with soft gears.
By profession I am mechanical engineer and before this I made an aprenticeship as mechanic.

I use the Myford for building parts for my motorcycle, a 1955 BMW with sidecar.

The pre owner, an engine builder, grinded the bed once. Meanwhile the precision to achieve 0.004” needs a lot of “feeling” so I think it’s time to start a refurbishment.

For this I ask for some articles from Model Engineer and Model Engineers Workshop.

I will place this request in the section General Questions.

Best regards

Werner
