Well thanks everyone for all the help and advice and thanks very much bazyle for the info on the hold down bolts both of which weren’t done up anywhere near tight the front one was actually floppy .i still have the increase in noise when feeding towards the chuck not as noisy feeding away and not a thing in neutral the tumble gears bazyle mentions if I’m looking at the right gears don’t seem to have bearings just fitted to an eccentric shaft ? Tia

Managed to get the spindle out not sure how you tell if roller bearings are knackered but they both look very good I tried to get a spanner on the headstock hold down bolt but couldn't now the shaft is out I notice the plate is loose why it didn't show before is beyond me any idea of the size and how on earth did you make a spanner? Cheers for all the advice, where are the bearings in the tumbler gear as mentioned for checking

Have stripped it down to just needing to remove the spindle I can feel slight

Movement if I grab each end of the end of the spindle and there is slight side to side

On the disc where the belt runs on the shaft, the whole thing moves probably 10though ish I took the two gears off the selector shaft (with the nuts behind) 9 on the eccentric pins both were loose is that correct sorry to seem dumb but I've never had a Boxford before! Give me a cnc sliding head anyday, sorry if I'm not explaining it very well

haven’t logged on lately as I’ve been busy with woodworking projects .i bought my boxford aud a few months back but haven’t really used it much till lately now I’m using it a couple of things I think are needing attention the first one being noise ,when the lever that engages forward or reverse traverse is engaged it is very noisy when in neutral it’s fine but going towards the chuck the traverse is noisy even with no movement taking place ? The other thing that’s worrying me is when turning or drilling quite heavy it looks to me like the chuck or headstock is getting pushed back only very slightly but when you back of it seems to spring back only very slightly but definetley movement I tried a bar under the chuck and there doesn’t seem to be any play up or down am I being petty ? Tia

I ordered two T51 toolholders from Amazon that finally arrived today the advert states for boxford 125mm to 150mm centre height which I thought was right .They are way too small have I ordered the wrong ones ? The ones I have are 73 mm long by 44mm high approx the ones they sent are about 20mm smaller they also stated will hold 16mm square but the gap is only 13mm ish . I’m sending them back but need to order a couple from somewhere else any help much appreciated

Well it’s in the workshop and have spent quite a few hours cleaning and levelling it ,I must say I’m pleased with it I checked the serial number and it seems to be a late model from rom1978/9

I’m going to have another look tomorrow hopefully I’ve never run a Boxford only a Colchester and CNCs how do I check the gearbox ? Visually or by sound and he had a bit of a job changing the lever over on the traverse but I think that was mainly because I was standing there .thanks for all the comments so far

Well that’s put the cat among the pigeons ! Although I ordered the warco wm250v at just over 2k with stand a Boxford AUD mk3 has just come up for sale less than a mile from me been to look and seems good ex school machine so interlocks abound he is asking £1200 and for that all being well he will deliver and put it in my workshop which is no mean feat any advice ? Should I cancel the modern warco and get the Boxford ? Help

Looking at getting one of these for my new WM 250v lathe ,I’m thinking at least it’s in the UK as any gear from China like create make might be a problem getting .anyone got anything to say about the chronos offering ? Good or bad

Well I finally ordered my lathe spent ages looking trying to decide but wanted a new lathe and a once only buy so decided I was going for the warco wm 250v with a stand but been out of stock for ages but they finally became available again yesterday I had decided to wait for there open day to have a look and hopefully get a deal but found out today it’s been cancelled due to corona virus worries but you could still get a show deal if you phoned up which I did .didnt get much off but saved myself a few quid now just have to wait .they said that you would they have another shipment of lathes on the way but after that who knows when the next lot will be available so if your thinking of buying it might be an idea to enquire sooner rather than later

Well despite telling me i could order on line in turns out i cant so the 10% off code cannot be used .i must say I'm very unimpressed by there attitude to a potential new customer im beggining to think i might look elsewhere ? You would think that they would be pushing to sell a machine but obviously they dont need the sales ive never bought a new machine without some kind of discount or freebies seriously got to go away and think about this .very un impressed with warco customer service

That’s one reason you often see scrap cars on transporters going to a scrap yard have part of the number plate obscured do they can’t be cloned apparently

I would always recommend mitutoyo for callipers and mics but Tesa and Etalon make very good micrometers also in truth you only get what you pay for .

Is that lucas cav ? We manufactured parts for you where i used to work many years ago

Thanks for your replies im erring towards metric as the resale value on imperial might be affected dont get me wrong i had 5 cnc machines and all but one were programed by me in metric the hardinge lathe i kept imperial as that was my first machine and all my jobs at the start were imperial pipe fittings
