Thread: What do you think of this con
05/11/2021 15:36:59

I remember years ago seeing someone outside a Tescos giving away bananas. vague recollection now but they had put on offer on their card points that meant that they were paying you to buy them. I did wonder if someone was sacked over it.
I must admit to cross checking prices, sometimes multibuys are more expensive and smaller sizes can be cheaper..

Thread: How can I cut 0.8mm thick stainless steel sheet more accurately by hand?
02/11/2021 14:44:17

Although i use fret and piercing saws to cut on the pull stroke I have always used coping and junior hacksaws cutting on the push stroke. \will now have to try them the other way around to see if it makes a difference. Just tried a search and there is no definitive answer. But Paul Sellers argues that a coping saw should be push, he probably has a bit more experience with using one than me.

Reminds me of cars trying to enter bus lanes that had rising bollards. cars being spiked created some entertaining videos.

Never manage to totally wipe out Horsetail. weedkillers will knock it back, as will WD40 etc after a good bruising. It does come back, but i have it under control.

This article amused me as I have been using a very similar one for some years. Worse eyesight caused me to use it more. Mine was made from recycled veneered blockboard. This did create a very stable platform on my record 112 vice. I also fitted a small vice. I use it for both small wood and metal work. I put "L" shape wood moulding around the edge. The use of blockboard does create a more solid platform than MDF.
The idea came from Harold Hall who described something similar that he used, sans vice.
I haven't painted mine, but like the idea of a white surface, so will when I have a spare 5min.

I can't really help, but suggest that more details of the intended use would help.

Noel

Years ago, when I regularly used acetylene and arc welding, i remember trying to use carbon rods to provide heat. I never really mastered the technique of holding the rod tips at the correct distance, but didn't try it for long.
I was musing about general changes as a result of the green agenda. My self propelled rotary mower will need replacing eventually. battery ones are not new, I remember a Suffolk Punch that was powered by a car battery from my youth. I suspect that the new(ish) mowers with rechargable batteries will have a much shorter life. My dewalt Nic Cad drill is poor at holding its charge now, but sadly you can't get replacement batteries. Mains power lawn mowers are only designed for smaller lawns, but if a larger one was available, I would prefer one, and live with having to manage the cable(s). We have a big lawn.
But the larger issue is that the cost of the changes will be an issue for those who are least well off.

This thread has got me wondering about the future. Will gas welding / brazing/ soldering become a thing of the past as we become greener and move away from gas? Will this have implications for our hobby?

19/10/2021 14:27:51

Does anyone still make their own acetylene from carbide. Someone I knew many decades ago did, I was impressed with their set up. Or is obtaining carbide now not possible.

I have a m10x1 that I picked up with a bunch of of secondhand taps, dies and holders. So far I have not used it. Will need to try it out. The rest go up to M16, Not really had a problem using this size. The holders were old and needed a bit of fetling, but the taps and dies all seemed unused.

Thread: Ideas on how to make up a G-Clamp Swivel Foot
11/10/2021 18:38:03

Some time ago I made one for a 9" record. A bit crude but soldered a piece of copper to a short length of plumping copper pipe. The cutting tool for the pipe rounds it over making it a tight fti over the ball. Still in use after many years, didn't expect it to be as durable as it has been.

Thread: KNEW Piercing-Saw Frames
11/10/2021 15:13:26

I have 2 piercing saws. One very old, one much newer. Both are tensioned by adjusting the length of the frame. this means that broken blades can often be reused, albeit with a shorter blade. i much prefer the older one. If I need more depth I also have 2 fret saw frames.

The jaws of one of my woodworking vice twist, but I find it useful for holding pieces don't have parallel sides. It is a vice that I rescued 50 odd years ago, refitting the metalwork into 2 old oak (really hard) blocks. It does seem to have got looser over the years.
I have never worried about about side loading my main engineering vice (a record 112) never seen it as an issue. But I have used packing on some of my smaller ones.
Interestingly, having read the start of the thread I also thought of using a thread connector bolt as the basis for a jack. Also I remember reading about someone who made replacement vice jaws that extended sidewards for bending metal. The end of one was tapped so that they could be pulled together - if I remember they were 18" long. It occurred that a small extension to the jaws would all a bolt in a tapped hole to hold them apart.

I have noticed that model engineering mags in, for example smiths, are not around for long, either more are being bought or less produced. The 2 may be connected?

I thought the scratch gauge in the last MEW would be really useful, so I went into the workshop today with the intention of making one. I couldn't find a suitable piece of square bar or a TC tip so I came up with this.

scratch.jpg

The 8mm rod is a piece from a dismantled printer and the scriber is part of a 3mm drill with a point ground on it. I make no claim as to originality, but I'm not really taking up woodwork.

Edited By Anthony Knights on 05/08/2020 18:41:51

I prefer your design to the one in MEW, thought about making a similar one. I have been known to use my woodworking one on metal. To keep t square you need a widish face to run against the edge.

Galvanized sheets generally take paint a lot better after they have weathered for some years. i assume that using acid simply speeds this up.
